So where can you buy a 4 bed detached for less than £450k?

Inspired by the previous thread.

Where in the UK can you buy a 4 bed, 2 receptions detached house with a garage & garden?

We were all set to put our house on the market last summer to upsize... and then we didn't.

Now there's a huge influx of people from the SE moving here, which has pushed up prices. In a way this is good because our house is worth more but we want to upsize so we would have to take on a larger mortgage than originally planned.

Are there any areas left in the UK where a 4 bed detached is £450k or less?

@chocpott

Alton in Hampshire.
Just searched on rightmove and can only find 3 bed detached for £450,000

@Kollamoolitumarellipawkyrollo

Of course it does...just not anywhere for you. These are just normal areas with normal people in

Or for people who are looking anywhere in the UK. Why would you choose a small detached with a tiny garden which is only detached by a tiny margin when you could choose from somewhere offering far more?

I don't know?Because you might want to live in that county? All sorts of reasons. No need to say nothing in the county when not true, it just involves compromise. You are in a pretty good position if you can.afford to look in the first place Confused

Following on, my question then is; is this happening North of London too? And if so; where is left for people to buy a family home for £450k?

Asking whether there are any areas left doesn't seem so very silly in the circumstances.

I'm sorry, but it's a silly question however you look at it. Yes, prices are rising in many places, and the stamp duty holiday/Covid are playing a part in this, but it is still a fact that most of the UK has 4 bed detached houses going for under £450k.

You can even generate a map on Zoopla - filtered for 4 bed detached houses with garden and parking/garage.

www.zoopla.co.uk/for-sale/map/houses/uk/?new_homes=include&include_retirement_homes=true&include_shared_ownership=true&include_shared_accommodation=true&beds_max=4&beds_min=4&feature=has_garden&feature=has_parking_garage&price_max=450000&property_sub_type=detached&q=UK&radius=0&results_sort=newest_listings&search_source=facets&pn=1&view_type=map

@midnightstar66

4 bed detached in all of Scotland? Definitely not. I popped 4 bed detached in my area and nothing came up at that price, almost everything well over half a million even then some were flats with the detached filter scored out
Where?

There’s 35 properties with minimum 5 beds under £500k within 3 miles of Edinburgh city centre!

Lassolarry1980 · 07/04/2021 12:14

Minimum 4 beds not 5 sorry

@ArtistInResidence

My original question was inspired by the 'How do you upsize?' thread. I'm in danger of repeating myself in every post, I have noticed recently that a new development in the next village over from us the 4 bed, integral garage houses are all £465 plus.

10 years ago this was a not particularly fashionable part of the Cotswolds although I know that just being in the Cotswolds makes it desirable for many.

Although we have been looking at houses and we are looking to upsize, we did the upsizing that the OP in the other thread was asking about many years ago.

My point was not meant to be a personal one. As I say, over the years I have seen London price rises along the M3/M4/M40 corridor in a ripple effect.

This is emphasised by people decamping from London post-Covid.

Similarly, I know that prices around Manchester have risen too. I don't know about the other big cities.

Following on, my question then is; is this happening North of London too? And if so; where is left for people to buy a family home for £450k?

Our 1st home was in an undesirable part of the SE. It was a repo, 2 up, 2 down. They had taken everything, including the skirting boards and ripped the electrical wiring from the light fittings. We did it up ourselves, from scratch, while I was pregnant for the last bit.

For us:

We have more than £450k.

We like Weardale, Cumbria, Northumberland, The Peak District, South Somerset, around Manchester. Neither of us know Suffolk or Norfolk or loads of other places that we don't know about yet. We would have taken a good look last year, except that we couldn't.

We also like the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales & North Yorkshire Moors but want to be able to get to Morrison's without fighting through the tourists during high season.

I like Cornwall, the quieter parts of Dorset & Sussex but again, don't want to be stuck in a queue for the beach when we are just popping to a mates house.

@OxanaVorontsova we have been looking there not in person, obviously

@LST we like the North, DH is Northern & passionately so.

My former boss grew up south of Sheffield in Derbyshire ...raves about it ...might suit ? There is always mumsnet local / local facebook pages to find out about areas. Wye valley looks good too.

All the lovely parts of Sheffield (bar Whirlow and some parts of Dore and Ecclesall). Fab access to peak District, 2 great theatres, loads of lovely bars and restaurants and fantastic schools of you choose the nice areas, even pretty good schools in less nice areas.
This is not true! Sheffield prices are through the roof.
ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 07/04/2021 12:18

Yeah, particularly west Sheffield where you have instant access to the Peak.

PuppyMonkey · 07/04/2021 12:18

My house was valued at £420,000 last year. May have changed now? We’re Derbyshire - between derby and Nottingham. It’s 5 bed, massive garden, outbuildings etc in an upmarket village with lots of countryside nearby.

BarbaraofSeville · 07/04/2021 12:19

Ah, but are they properly detached, within catchment of the right schools and in Mumsnet approved areas? We can't have anyone having to compromise can we?

@ReceptacleForTheRespectable DH won't live in Scotland and I have already said that school catchment isn't an issue.

I can't work in Wales, so Wales is out too.

I'm laughing at people touting a "grammar school" system as a plus point. You do realise that 80% of kids in areas with them DON'T go to a grammar school and that secondary schools in these areas are hellish if by chance you PFB doesn't actually make the grade

MummyJ12 · 07/04/2021 17:34

Papworth Everard just outside Cambridge; Bedford and Stevenage are all examples of areas in the South where you’re going to get something. You can go pretty much anywhere in the U.K. other than city centres. Put a radius search area into Rightmove. Just do your research on the area. For example, here in York, you’d get something but it probably isn’t what you’d expect to get for your money.

A 4 bed detached in S10 or 11 is unlikely to be less than £450. Fulwood? Bents Green? Sandygate? Crosspool? All well over 450k for a 4 bed detached.
