So where can you buy a 4 bed detached for less than £450k?

Inspired by the previous thread.

Where in the UK can you buy a 4 bed, 2 receptions detached house with a garage & garden?

We were all set to put our house on the market last summer to upsize... and then we didn't.

Now there's a huge influx of people from the SE moving here, which has pushed up prices. In a way this is good because our house is worth more but we want to upsize so we would have to take on a larger mortgage than originally planned.

Are there any areas left in the UK where a 4 bed detached is £450k or less?

Weirdly, in the South East. Margate, Dover, probably Medway, Sheppey. London and around it is stupid money, head to the coast and you'd be surprised.
Not Whitstable, Brighton or Hastings though. You would struggle to get a garage for that.

**Around Swindon”

I was just about to say the same

Can ask a nested Aibu? Is it me or is the decor in these places is unequivocally hideous?

I'm so baffled - some kind of nightmarish Bristol thing? Not in the UK if that makes a difference.

Parts of Berkshire and Hampshire. Easy commute to London, lovely countryside close by and large towns.

RubyWooRed · 06/04/2021 09:56

Scotland
You can get new build 4 bedroom with garage 3 WC etc for 241,000

Puffalicious · 06/04/2021 09:56

Ferriswheel20 Fintry us a pretty area but not just outside Glasgow at all. I'm also incredibly surprised they got it for that budget- it must have issues/ need hundreds doing to it.

Puffalicious · 06/04/2021 09:57

*It's in Stirlingshire

Wouldn't most people count a house 4 miles from the centre of Edinburgh as 'in Edinburgh'? As in if you worked in that area, it would be a suitable place to live.

^You could probably claim to not be able to find a 4 bed detached in pretty much any city if you limited yourself to city centres and/or ultra prime areas, but the reality is that, most places except London and some parts of the SE you can get a 4 bed detached in a nice area that's a short commute to the city centre for under £450k.

Exactly; also the 4-bedroom detached isn't exactly the housing style for the centre of Edinburgh which is either flats, large terraced houses, or large terraced houses divided into flats. Can you imagine Londoners complaining of the hardship of living 4 miles from Charing Cross?

England. Ireland. Scotland. Wales.Scores and scores of places everywhere

Ireland isn't in the UK.

ExConstance · 06/04/2021 10:09

Most of the not ultra fashionable bits of Gloucestershire. There are new and newish 4 bedroom new huilds in Stroud and Stonehouse you might find suitable and easy access to motorways and trains to London.
Stroud is apparently the best place in England to live, according to the Sunday Times, personally I'd prefer somewhere the public toilets were not regularly clo;ased due to drug users.

RedPandaMama · 06/04/2021 10:10

Pretty much everywhere in the north west! I'm on Greater Manchester/Lancashire border, 40 mins drive to either Manchester or Liverpool, direct trains to Edinburgh, London, Birmingham. 45 mins to beaches, 1hr drive to Lakes or Wales. Looking at buying next year.

£200k would get you a nice 3 bed semi, £300-350 a nice 4 bed detached. Probably get a 5 bed or very large 4 bed for £450k!

biglips · 06/04/2021 10:16

Further up North than in South. In Liverpool, all the houses price has gone up too. Take a look on rightmove.co.uk

florascotia2 · 06/04/2021 10:16

Just joining in the chorus of 'no, definitely NOT all of Scotland'. For those that don't know, houses in desirable places (eg parts of Edinburgh and yes, even parts of Glasgow) often go for several tens of thousands above advertised asking price.

WombatChocolate · 06/04/2021 10:19

I have seen 4 beds with parking in Surrey for this price.

They are likely to be either townhouses which were built perhaps 15 years ago and terraced or semis rather than detached, but often come with 2 parking spaces. Or, you could get a detached which needs some work.

I think there are more properties available in this price bracket, even in expensive counties if you look hard or aren’t so fussy about area or style of housing.

Likewise, here in Surrey, there are plenty of 3 bed houses available for £350k or a bit less. Yes, new build 2 bed flats sell for more than this, but people can get an older, smallish Victorian house or a smallish 70s built or recently built 3 bed in this price bracket.

There will be LOADS of choice across the country for 4 bed detached for the price mentioned and substantially below that price too.

We do know. We also know that houses in the most desirable and central parts of Glasgow and Edinburgh are more expensive. Nobody is saying there are no 4 bedroom properties in whole of Scotland that cost more than 450K!

Can get one for under 300k in Lancashire

TwunchOfBats · 06/04/2021 10:24

Anywhere north of Cambridge (pretty much)

PADH · 06/04/2021 10:33

Im in Northern Ireland. A 4 bed detached in a lovely development in the nice part of our town is about 200k. House prices in England are crazy to me! We'd never be able to afford it.

RaraRachael · 06/04/2021 10:35

North East of Scotland (and probably other areas too) but nothing to do especially if you've got teenagers.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 06/04/2021 10:38
@AwaAnBileYerHeid it's just outside Glasgow, in Fintry - lovely area, would be more than happy to walk around there after dark!
Fintry is a village in central Scotland, it isn't Glasgow by any stretch of the imagination. If you wanted Glasgow, then depending on the area, you could have one of the most expensive detached houses in the country or one which is pretty cheap but in a not great area.

Mumwithapub · 06/04/2021 10:38

If you like Wales, learn Welsh there are Welsh channels on t.v. I used to live near Aberystwyth many years ago so I watched a lot of Welsh kids programmes (basic language in kids shows) put the subtitles on. Also used to watch a soap called Pobol y cum picked up quite a bit in 2 years all forgotten now. Use YouTube have fun with it plus its not that far from you to pop over for a day out and practice your skills to get going.

Cherrysoup · 06/04/2021 10:38

£475 for a 3 bed with double drive, 20ft kitchen and huge garden, 20 mins from Euston. Semi, not attached.
