Inspired by the previous thread.

Where in the UK can you buy a 4 bed, 2 receptions detached house with a garage & garden?

We were all set to put our house on the market last summer to upsize... and then we didn't.

Now there's a huge influx of people from the SE moving here, which has pushed up prices. In a way this is good because our house is worth more but we want to upsize so we would have to take on a larger mortgage than originally planned.

Are there any areas left in the UK where a 4 bed detached is £450k or less?

For everyone mentioning ribble valley, it’s lovely but ....... the rain

Samanabanana · 06/04/2021 09:10

Yorkshire, and you'd probably have enough to buy a 2 bed terrace with the change. I bloody love Yorkshire.

MaryLennoxsSkull those are the sorts of detached 3/4 bed properties you can get in Edinburgh for that money, so I think that's what posters meant when suggesting it is possible. If you want something in the city centre, or with 'character', 'period features' and a large garden then of course it will cost more.

If you can condider moving just outside of Edinburgh you will get a lot more for your money.

tabulahrasa · 06/04/2021 09:14

@MaryLennoxsScowl

Could any of the posters assuring everyone that you can get that in Edinburgh please send me a link? I’ve been actively looking for much less than that (not necessarily detached, no need for garage, 3 beds would be fine) for five months now and it’s either 4 miles from city centre, or a new build with a postage-stamp garden and the living room upstairs because the footprint is so small! I’m now looking for a flat.
4 miles from the centre is still Edinburgh...

We live in Stamford Lincs and bought our 4 bed detached huge garden with extended garage in a quiet cul de sac for £434

@Overoptimistix

Ely - just voted best place to live in Cambridgeshire! This one is in a village 5 mins outside of Ely itself but ticks all the boxes:

Cross Lane, Little Downham, Ely, Cambridgeshire, CB6
www.rightmove.co.uk/property/78577260

Plenty that meet the criteria within Ely itself but they tend to be new builds.

That brought back memories. My favourite aunt lived in Cross Land.

Glasgow! I have one!

Yep...

They’re not houses I’d spend that much money on... if I had it, lol, but, while house prices in Edinburgh are inflated compared to other places nearby, it’s not true that you just can’t get them for that and in perfectly fine areas - just not central ones.

Plenty of houses for the money in Wales

froomeonthebroom · 06/04/2021 09:22

Malvern Hills, Herefordshire, Worcestershire. Loads there and a beautiful place to live.

May I just also point out it rains a LOT here in Wales.

And if you do relocate from England, please respect the language (ideally by making an attempt to learn it, there've never been more opportunities) and the culture rather than looking for ways to circumvent these.

We're not just a nation of cheaper houses and a beautiful playground and many of us are getting a tad pissed off at being seen as such, especially when our kids are being priced out of housing.

Joeblack066 · 06/04/2021 09:30

2,603 of them in this part of Derbyshire!

Glasgow and surrounding areas - my friends have just bought a 5 bedroom detached for 200k
I'm guessing it was in one of the less desirable parts of Glasgow. My sister just bought a 2 bed flat in Glasgow for £290,000. Glasgow has many very expensive areas however you can find cheaper ones if you go to certain areas (areas where I wouldn't care to walk around alone after dark!).

@Kollamoolitumarellipawkyrollo

That Havant one in Hampshire (page 4-can’t quote as already quoting) is only just over 1223 sq feet! And it is in Leigh Park.

www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/10481926#/
Though searching for other detached new builds in Hampshire, maybe that isn’t so bad for £442k as this linked one is very similar for almost £600k.

Even in what looks to be a less desirable area with hardly any outside space and not what anyone pictures when they hear, ‘detached’ is over £450k www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/103873958#/

This in Aldershot is £500k and as far as I can wrk out, Aldershot and Leigh Park are areas that are much cheaper than anywhere else. www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/71291853#/

I don’t think Hampshire really does have anything.

Yes but I did explain what you got in Hampshire was urban sprawl. I purposely looked up Leigh Park as I knew it would be dirt cheap.

That new build isn’t actually in Leigh Park. It’s on the other side of the main road that partition s it off - closer to Havant proper. But basically all the nice towns nearby - Emsworth for example have become one massive housing sprawl. The advantage with Havant is that it’s not far from the sea.

But agrees a property matching the Ops description is going to have serious compromises in Hampshire

CaveMum · 06/04/2021 09:43

There’s a development a few miles from me (Cambridge/Suffolk border) that currently has 4 bed detached homes on with a starting price of £420,000 and upwards, so yes they’re out there, it all boils down to where you want to live.

howmanyhats · 06/04/2021 09:43

@SarahAndQuack

Erm, most places?

It might not be as nice as you'd like or in as nice an area as you wish, but I think you're really only ruling out London and parts of the SE for this.

This! Unless you're trying to live in specific parts of the South East, this is a healthy budget.
moochingtothepub · 06/04/2021 09:44

Midlands and north, parts of Somerset too

Hobbesmanc · 06/04/2021 09:45

Even in our very popular South Manchester suburb with great schools, a direct train to Manchester in 15 mins and loads of green space, you can still pick up a seventies 4 bedder with decent garden in your budget. And we have our own John Lewis in walking distance

ferriswheel20 · 06/04/2021 09:45

@AwaAnBileYerHeid it's just outside Glasgow, in Fintry - lovely area, would be more than happy to walk around there after dark!
