Why do ppl do this? Why thank for a journey that u have paid for? And the driver hopefully drove safely but that's their jobs. So why say thanks? I don't get it

OP posts:
rainbowthoughts · 03/04/2021 10:05

That's a shame for you.

Flavabobble · 03/04/2021 10:06

It's courtesy.

AcornAutumn · 03/04/2021 10:06

I'm about to do just this very shortly!

If you don't get it, I can't make you see it.

dementedpixie · 03/04/2021 10:06

Because you're still alive and they stopped when you asked them to Grin

InternationalRelationist · 03/04/2021 10:06

Good manners.

TheJackieWeaver · 03/04/2021 10:06

Wow. Do you say thanks to your hairdresser? Or to the person at the supermarket checkout? Or who passes you your McDonald’s? Or who delivers your parcels?

It’s just basic manners.

BrumBoo · 03/04/2021 10:07

You always thank drive. What's wrong with you?

LemonBarley1234 · 03/04/2021 10:07

It is a polite little courtesy that costs nothing.

OddBoots · 03/04/2021 10:08

It's more logical than saying Bless You when someone sneezes but we still do that because it's polite and it is a social behaviour.

Ilovewillow · 03/04/2021 10:08

Probably for the same reason I say thank you to everyone who has provided a service I've paid for. Good manners, we all like to be thanked regardless of being paid for our time.

They do this in Ireland. I don't remember people doing it in the UK, but maybe I was the rude one not saying thank you there.

redcarbluecar · 03/04/2021 10:09

It’s a pleasant and polite acknowledgment, like thanking a taxi driver, shop worker or waiter - they’re doing their job; you’ve benefited from their service. However you don’t HAVE to do it, or get it.

theteachesofpeaches · 03/04/2021 10:09

Why say thanks to anyone in a service job?
Cause it's nice to be nice.

Midlifelady · 03/04/2021 10:09

I do it all the time. Common courtesy. I also thank servers when they bring the food or drinks in a restaurant, cashiers when they give me change or receipt, and so on. Don't you?

Iggly · 03/04/2021 10:09

Wow OP.

Does it hurt to say thanks? Have a bit of common courtesy. Manners cost nothing.

Some people are so keen to reduce everything to pure transactions. Nasty attitude.

CongealedCrags · 03/04/2021 10:09

You always say 'Cheers Drive' as you leave the bus. It's The Rule.

JosephineBaker · 03/04/2021 10:09

Because I’m not pig-ignorant.

Jesus, do you not thank anyone who’s paid? Your waiter bringing food? The person serving drinks? The person at the till in a shop? Your postie?

SuddenArborealStop · 03/04/2021 10:10

Basic courtesy, I wonder if it's cultural to do it by habit though.. in Ireland tourists don't seem to do it but very few Irish people would get off a bus and not say it.

Alsohuman · 03/04/2021 10:10

It’s automatic. I never even think about doing it on the odd occasion I use the bus. Why question a nice courtesy that costs nothing?

honeylulu · 03/04/2021 10:10

It's just polite. I say thanks to people who serve me in shops and restaurants too. I'm a solicitor and clients say thanks when I provide my advices (even if they don't like the content haha). I think people who don't are rude and arrogant. HTH.

Dizzy1234 · 03/04/2021 10:10

Because its polite, they have got you to your destination safely.
It doesn't hurt to say thanks, I think driving a bus is a pretty thankless job, they're dealing with the public all day, probably interact with a few difficult passengers plus other road users.
I would say thank you to staff in a shop, bus drivers are no different, both are providing a service and getting paid but it would be considered rude not to thank someone who served you in a shop but considered wierd to thank a bus driver 🙄
It's just good manners

afaloren · 03/04/2021 10:10

Do you also refuse to thank waitstaff, checkout staff, delivery drivers, etc? It’s just basic manners to thank people regardless of whether or not money changed hands.

FourWordsImMuNiTy · 03/04/2021 10:10

Londoners tend not to but that’s only because they normally get off at a different door to the one they enter in so they’re not passing the driver.

It’s a social thing. Do you not say thank you to other people who are doing their job, the shop assistant, the dry cleaner, the waiter?

Spidey66 · 03/04/2021 10:10

This. Shop assistants etc are being paid to serve you in the same way a bus driver is paid to drive you.

It's basic everyday manners.
