Says thanks to bus driver

Why do ppl do this? Why thank for a journey that u have paid for? And the driver hopefully drove safely but that's their jobs. So why say thanks? I don't get it

OP posts:
Namechangeforspring2021 · 03/04/2021 10:19

So that’s answered that one, any other burning questions OP?

gurglebelly · 03/04/2021 10:20

Because it's polite. I also pay delivery charges for packages to be delivered but still thank the delivery driver when they hand it over, thank the waiter/waitress after a meal, thank my hairdresser etc

It's very sad that people see such basic manners as weird these days

MeanderingGently · 03/04/2021 10:20

Politeness, common courtesy and kindness, acknowledging the fact that another human being is working at a job which makes your life easier....bus driver, waitress, hair dresser, taxi driver....anyone really. I even say thank you to the cashier on the till at Tesco, and to the COVID sentry (!) standing at the supermarket door as I leave. They often smile, I suspect they don't often get thanks for standing at the door for hours on end...

You might have paid for the service, but that payment is for their time and skill. Your thank you is a kindly acknowledgement that without people being prepared to work in often low paid, thankless jobs, our lives would be very much harder, and we should be grateful....

glitterelf · 03/04/2021 10:20

I can't believe that you even have to ask about basic manners as an adult Shock
Is it that you see this type of job as beneath you ? I often thank the post man, delivery drivers and even the bin men if I see them because I value the work that they do and without them I'd be at a loss. It's common courtesy.

FangsForTheMemory · 03/04/2021 10:20

Good manners. There are loads of threads on mumsnet about class. Truly classy people are have good manners.

PumpkinPie2016 · 03/04/2021 10:21

I always did when I used buses. It's just basic manners.

I say thank you to my hairdresser/check out staff/cafe staff/waiting staff etc. I have paid for all of their services but I still say thank you.

It wouldn't occur to me not toHmm

Sunshineonarainydayy · 03/04/2021 10:22

Why say thanks to anyone?

WestendVBroadway · 03/04/2021 10:22

@hesnearly3 What do you do for a job? My manager and colleagues often thank me for doing a particular task. I thank my colleagues if they help out with something. We all getting paid to work, so should we all ditch our manner?

BlusteryLake · 03/04/2021 10:23

@Namechangeforspring2021

Perhaps next is coming "Why should I avoid knocking over old ladies who are in my way getting on the bus , and why bother to give up my seat to a disabled person?"
Eyevorbig0ne · 03/04/2021 10:23

I always used to.
It's like people used to cheer and clap when their flight landed safely.
I had a flight gap of 6 years and was sad to see that has stopped. I'm always grateful to get there in one piece but I am humble anyway.

AnnaSW1 · 03/04/2021 10:23

Just manners. I say thanks at the end of every transaction, whether it's to a bus driver, a nurse, a gym instructor, a shop worker, the deliveroo guy or a colleague. Just manners.

Chimchar · 03/04/2021 10:23

@CongealedCrags

You always say 'Cheers Drive' as you leave the bus. It's The Rule.
Yep. Totally agree with this.
BurbageBrook · 03/04/2021 10:24

Always say thank you!! Unless on a London bus and getting off at the back of the bus.

ThatsShitTryHarder · 03/04/2021 10:25

@WiseOwlOne

They do this in Ireland. I don't remember people doing it in the UK, but maybe I was the rude one not saying thank you there.
Everyone does it in Liverpool.

You get the side eye from other passengers if you don’t Grin

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 03/04/2021 10:25

Good manners.

catfeets · 03/04/2021 10:25

Common courtesy. Are you rude in other areas of life too?
My dad is a bus driver and they put up with some right shit. They're threatened with knives, spat at, harassed etc. They have to pay out of their own pocket if they have to let on people who can't afford the fare too, the company don't cover that.

I don't particularly enjoy saying thanks to the majority of service providers, but I still do it because I'm not a rude bastard.

ImTheWolfToday · 03/04/2021 10:25

It’s nice to be nice.

In the same way that I’d say thank you to anyone, whether they paid me or not. Do you not say thank you to people who serve you in shops? Hairdresser? Delivery driver?

Namechangeforspring2021 · 03/04/2021 10:25

@BlusteryLake yep or maybe - ‘why should I dispose of my rubbish when people are paid to clean up after me?’

iklboo · 03/04/2021 10:25

Nobody is this obtuse, surely?

OllyBJolly · 03/04/2021 10:26

Always do - and anyone else who provides a service. Why would you not?

ThatsShitTryHarder · 03/04/2021 10:26

@BurbageBrook

Always say thank you!! Unless on a London bus and getting off at the back of the bus.
I got off a London bus at the back yesterday and thanked the driver loudly enough so he could hear.

As did the elderly woman who got off in front of me.

CareBear50 · 03/04/2021 10:26

OP, your comment is indicative of a lot that is wrong with the world we live in.

Very thoughtless and rude.

3JsMa · 03/04/2021 10:26

@FourWordsImMuNiTy
Oh,yes we do.It's just polite,and yes they can hear you and usually wave back with a smile.They deserve is, regardless of where you are.

LivingOnAnIsland · 03/04/2021 10:27

I always thank the bus driver, so do my kids, it's common courtesy.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 03/04/2021 10:27

Because I was brought up with basic good manners...
