Why do ppl do this? Why thank for a journey that u have paid for? And the driver hopefully drove safely but that's their jobs. So why say thanks? I don't get it

OP posts:
Mrsjayy · 03/04/2021 10:37

It's just a courtesy isn't it. I don't know why you don't. Do it !

Griselda1 · 03/04/2021 10:37

In Northern Ireland it's common for collections to be made for bus drivers who do day excursions etc.
I once took a group of young people on a trip to New York and they tipped an excursion driver in this way.He cried when they gave him the $50 and explained that he couldn't afford a hotel for the over night stay so was travelling quite a distance out to stay with a sister. Seeing this huge black man reduced to tears over a small act of kindness was amazing for them as they were unemployed young people there for work experience.

GabsAlot · 03/04/2021 10:37

i didnt used to do it in london but loally now i do just nice and the bus drivers are reall good round here

TwoTypesOfStock · 03/04/2021 10:37

It’s nice to say thank you, it’s nice to receive thanks.
What a miserable world otherwise.

Rosehip10 · 03/04/2021 10:37

Not sure about the comments on London buses - maybe it is a suburbs thing, but many on the routes I use many people give a wave to the front or say thanks as they get off at the middle doors.

Yep we do that in Wales too 👍🏼

I don’t think the OP is coming back, perhaps they were the same person who started the thread on cockney accents this morning...
And if you do come back, YABVVU. And Rude.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 03/04/2021 10:38

I always do it. It’s courteous I think.

I live in London do, and would thank the driver both here or anywhere else!

DoingItMyself · 03/04/2021 10:38

I haven't been out for a while (can't think why...) but in Manchester we traditionally say 'Thank you' to the bus driver. Firstly, we are thanking him/her for driving and stopping, and for not slamming all on to make us fall over. Secondly, we are being polite to encourage him/her to stop next time he sees us standing forlornly at the bus stop in the rain. Also, we have almost certainly seen drivers abused by/having to deal with difficult passengers in the past. So, it makes sense to thank the driver.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 03/04/2021 10:39

Even though we get off at middle doors you only need to project very slightly for the drive to hear you!

iklboo · 03/04/2021 10:39

@Griselda1 - yes! No day trip was complete without a 'whip round for t'driver'.

DoingItMyself · 03/04/2021 10:39

We do collections on coach trips, too. We're just nice.

Mummyoflittledragon · 03/04/2021 10:39

Basic manners to show appreciation for someone, who has made your life easier.

Do you thank the cashier at the supermarket op?

Benjispruce2 · 03/04/2021 10:40

It’s courtesy. I thank shop assistants, taxi drivers, hairdressers too, don’t you?

5128gap · 03/04/2021 10:40

Well personally I always do a whip round and shout 'three cheers for the driver! Hip hip...' as I alight.

iklboo · 03/04/2021 10:40

though I’m unconvinced that shouting in a confined space in the middle of an airborne pandemic, even with a mask on, is quite as public spirited as people think it is.

Nobody shouts it.

MysteriousMonkey · 03/04/2021 10:41

Manners!

tiredmum2468 · 03/04/2021 10:42

It's just what you do really isn't it?

TheNoodlesIncident · 03/04/2021 10:43

My explanation for this is to show appreciation of the service given, as everybody alive, regardless of what their job actually entails, likes to feel appreciated. I say "it's my explanation" as this is what I told my young child, as his autism meant he might not be able to verbalise the concept to himself. I wouldn't have thought an adult would have difficulty with it, but there you go.

It's basic manners in the UK and nearly everybody in my area does it. I don't drive so use the buses a lot in usual times. (The only people who don't seem to consistently are foreign so it may not be usual in their country - no judgement about that but here, we do as a common courtesy, alongside apologising if someone steps on your foot.)

However, OP not been back so probably just clickbait. Oh well.

Newnameforthisquestion · 03/04/2021 10:43

It's manners.

If you try saying think you @hesnearly3 you get smiles and pleasantry back and the world is a better place. It costs nothing at all.

Mrsjayy · 03/04/2021 10:43

We used to go on day trips with my Gran there was always a whip round for the driver..

Thefaceofboe · 03/04/2021 10:43

But don’t you say thanks to any paid service? Cafes? Bars? Surely you say thanks bye on your way out.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 03/04/2021 10:43

I would always thank a bus driver, taxi driver or train conductor if they're there when I happen to get off.

Applauding when a plane lands, though? No.

Wishitsnows · 03/04/2021 10:44

I say sorry when I bump into inanimate objects out of reflex so if I took a bus I would automatically say thanks as I got off!

Teardrop2021 · 03/04/2021 10:45

Well they provided a service so it's basic manners just like I'd thank a taxi driver, delivery man.
