Says thanks to bus driver

Why do ppl do this? Why thank for a journey that u have paid for? And the driver hopefully drove safely but that's their jobs. So why say thanks? I don't get it

In London it's become a virtue signal. People exit from the middle of the bus and say it so that the passengers hear. The bus driver sitting behind their plastic shield certainly doesn't. Many of the drivers are maniac drivers anyway and that just emphasises the virtue signalling bit of this.

OnlyYellowRoses · 03/04/2021 10:28

Because good manners cost nothing

ScarfaceCwaw · 03/04/2021 10:28

I'm a Londoner and we get off at the rear door without going past the driver, but I raise my hand in acknowledgement as s/he drives away. It's just a small acknowledgement and thanks that they drove safely, pulled over at my stop as requested, etc.

BikeRunSki · 03/04/2021 10:29

@LemonBarley1234

It is a polite little courtesy that costs nothing.

Virtue signalling being polite - that’s a new one on me 🤔
AlCalavicci · 03/04/2021 10:30

I am with all PP , I almost always thank them and I use 4 to 6 buses a day ! the only time I dont is on the very rare occasion that I think the drivers haven't been great at driving ( I dont mean dangerous ) but thinks like when they are stopped at lights and creep past the line or worst like the one I have a few weeks ago , he stopped well before the traffic light line but the crept and braked hard about 5 times he seemed to be testing the brakes , we all looked like fecking nodding dogs .
So I did not thank him !

CaveMum · 03/04/2021 10:31

@CongealedCrags

You always say 'Cheers Drive' as you leave the bus. It's The Rule.
Everyone in Bristol knows this is The Rule Grin
InTheNightWeWillWish · 03/04/2021 10:31

Other than because I’m not a dick? Because it doesn’t negatively impact my life in any way whatsoever. It doesn’t cost me anything. It doesn’t stop me going about my business. It doesn’t shorten my lifespan. Why wouldn’t you? Manners cost nothing and makes the world a much nicer place to be in.

I will also thank waiting staff, cashiers, delivery drivers, postman, the vets, the lady in boots who helped me picked a lipstick, the person who emailed me something at work that I need, if someone offers me a drink. I’ll also throw out ‘have a nice day’ and I mean it Shock

shipsandgiggles · 03/04/2021 10:31

It’s polite

I wonder if the OP will come back and thank us for our comments? Grin

PandaFluff · 03/04/2021 10:32

Why would you not thank them?

Pheebs2021 · 03/04/2021 10:33

Do you never get a thank you for your job? I get a thanks for today, most days from my boss and its lovely to hear.

Tombero · 03/04/2021 10:33

It’s basic manners.

Even in fortnite they thank the driver as they head off on their killing spree!

Tinydinosaur · 03/04/2021 10:33

I say thanks when a waitress hands me my food, or bill, when I get out a taxi, when I leave the doctors, when I get off a bus, when the carpet fitters are done. It takes half a second.

FourWordsImMuNiTy · 03/04/2021 10:34

Ah well I haven’t gone on a London bus for a year now so I’m clearly out of date. Back in the before times there was no way the driver would have heard you through the scrum of bodies between the back door and the front. I can believe that nowadays with emptier buses and changed social norms and appreciation of the number of London bus drivers who have actually given their lives to get people from A to B people are doing performative driver thanking - though I’m unconvinced that shouting in a confined space in the middle of an airborne pandemic, even with a mask on, is quite as public spirited as people think it is.

This, 100%, every time
twoticksvix · 03/04/2021 10:34

My brother and my father in law are bus drivers (the latter a children's school bus) and both greatly appreciate those who thank them. I always thank them when I get off too. Basic manners I'd say!

MiaFitz · 03/04/2021 10:34

Oh dear! YABU

Roselilly36 · 03/04/2021 10:35

Extremely rare for me to get on a bus, I can’t remember the last time I did, but I would always say thanks, rude not too IMHO.

SendARavenToRiverRun · 03/04/2021 10:35

What a peach you are. So do you thank shop staff? Waiters? Hairdressers?. Or do you just breeze through life believing that it's enough that they get paid for their job?!.
Bet you're dead popular. Manners cost nowt!
Cheers drive 👍

LondonJax · 03/04/2021 10:35

Another Londoner here. We were taught very early on to shout out a thank you to the driver. I thank them even if I'm not walking past them to the door. I don't actually know anyone who doesn't.

But then I, like others, also thank taxi drivers, waiting staff, delivery drivers, hairdressers, shop staff. They're also paid to do a job and last time I was in a restaurant I didn't get anything extra - like being serenaded. Maybe I'm a fool for thanking them for my food which I've paid for? Or maybe I'm just polite and appreciate that they (whoever they are) don't have an easy job - driving, serving or whatever - and I may just make their day a little better by thanking them rather than pretending they're invisible.

Manners cost nothing.

ThatsShitTryHarder · 03/04/2021 10:36

That’s a bit of a reach.

midsomermurderess · 03/04/2021 10:36

The city I live in, it seems like everyone does it. It's an embedded part of the etiquette of bus travel. Some people really call out 'thank you, driver' as we all get off in the middle now. I sometimes wonder what tourists make of it, but I can't imagine not saying 'thank you'. Not to seems a bit oafish.
