Says thanks to bus driver

hesnearly3 · 03/04/2021 10:04

Why do ppl do this? Why thank for a journey that u have paid for? And the driver hopefully drove safely but that's their jobs. So why say thanks? I don't get it

OP posts:

@Alsohuman

It’s automatic. I never even think about doing it on the odd occasion I use the bus. Why question a nice courtesy that costs nothing?
Exactly this.
Gruntwork · 03/04/2021 10:11

Well. I thank the bus driver in a cheery voice because I have manners and self-respect but also as a rebuke to all the mouth-breathing yahoos who barge off the bus without doing so.

grapewine · 03/04/2021 10:11

It's the most basic manners. Are you just goady and bored?

Vallmo47 · 03/04/2021 10:11

This can’t be real, surely?

greeneyedlulu · 03/04/2021 10:12

Whats with all the goady posts at the moment? Crawl back under your rock!

ilovesooty · 03/04/2021 10:12

What's wrong with basic courtesy to others? Sorry for you if you can't see that it makes things more pleasant for everyone.

Zarinea · 03/04/2021 10:12

Because they're nice. Most people are.

LittleMG · 03/04/2021 10:13

When someone does something for you it’s good manners to say thank you. Even if they are being paid. Surely you can see that?

greenfrogs1 · 03/04/2021 10:13

@TheJackieWeaver

Wow. Do you say thanks to your hairdresser? Or to the person at the supermarket checkout? Or who passes you your McDonald’s? Or who delivers your parcels?

It’s just basic manners.

This!
HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 03/04/2021 10:13

Sometimes a student will thank me for a lesson as they walk out the door, I'm just doing my job but it feels nice to be appreciated.

Saying thank you and recognising someone has done something for you is polite and is likely to improve someone's day so why not say thank you regardless of if you've paid for the service?

LizBennet · 03/04/2021 10:14

Ooohh I'd be judging you if I didn't hear you thank the driver!

How rude not to.

BlusteryLake · 03/04/2021 10:15

Do your rule of thumb is "don't thank people if you've paid for something"? How do you function in your community being so rude? It must surely affect your outward persona, and therefore how people relate to you (or not, as the case may be )

WorraLiberty · 03/04/2021 10:15

So you'll be teaching your DC to only say thank you when someone does them a favour OP? Hmm

I hope they learn better manners from their teachers and friends.

1sunnyday23 · 03/04/2021 10:15

There is absolutely no need to say thanks for the bus driver or anyone for that matter.

However it's just nice to have say thanks to people and show appreciation.

I get paid to do my job and it's nice when people recognise my work and say thank you. It makes me feel happy and appreciated. I make sure I say thank you to all my team for their work too.

Let's make the world a nicer place to live in by appreciating others and saying thank you to each other

LudoBear · 03/04/2021 10:15

I thank everybody. Because I was brought up being taught manners.

VaVaGloom · 03/04/2021 10:15

Hopefully all the replies above have explained to you why it’s courteous to thank someone who is providing a service to you. @hesnearly3 when you are working isn’t it nice to receive thanks?

nicslackey · 03/04/2021 10:15

I love the sound of the bus as it empties at Belfast City Hall. Thanks. Thanks. Thanks. Thanks. Thank you. Thanks. Thanks. Thanks. Cheers. Thanks. Thanks.
The very odd one doesn't but on the whole it cheers me to hear this simple courtesy.

EvilKinevil · 03/04/2021 10:15

I do this every time. It makes my experience of living far less anonymous. Plus if I’m with my kids it teaches them to value people in public services and see them as the sentient humans that they are!

Try to imagine being a bus driver where nobody says thank you to you all shift. That would mean nobody speaks to you either, now we don’t pay for tickets and now the bus tells us which stop we are at.

Communicate positively for a better world.

RonSwansonsChair · 03/04/2021 10:16

This feels like a conversation with my kids; Why do I have to say please and thank you?

Because it's good manners!

VerityWibbleWobble · 03/04/2021 10:16

Err I thank every single person that provides me with a service, shop assistant, hairdresser, doctor, milkman, everyone.

Sirzy · 03/04/2021 10:16

Basic manners.

There are many people who we see who are paid for their jobs but I still thank them if their job means helping us.

bennibooboo · 03/04/2021 10:16

Out of interest, What do you do for a job OP??

WorraLiberty · 03/04/2021 10:17

@bennibooboo

Out of interest, What do you do for a job OP??
Probably a Traffic Warden 😂😂
proopher · 03/04/2021 10:18

So OP, do you not thank anyone doing their job? Anyone who gives you change, passes you a purchase, helps you find someone in a shop, serves you your meal, clears your table after a meal, helps you check into a hotel, helps when you call customer service, delivers you a parcel?

If the above is true then I'm sorry but you're a deeply unpleasant person.

MadeOfStarStuff · 03/04/2021 10:18

It’s just basic manners which take no time and cost nothing. Just like it’s polite to thank delivery drivers when they bring you stuff, even though you paid for delivery.
