A woman in her 80s has been savaged to death by neighbours dogs
Am I being unreasonable to want much stricter controls on keeping dogs as pets

You mean like in this post where you suggested people should only have dogs if they have the space to exercise them privately, not in parks, along canals or other public spaces

The post where was I asking why do people have dogs if they do not have the space to exercise them away from public spaces

That was a "why", not, as you wrongly quoted, a "should"

Hardly a controversial question to most people I would have thought

To make my position clear to you
I want all dogs in public places to be kept on leads
I want stricter laws on keeping dogs in homes, in gardens and in yards, eg metal fencing
I want certain breeds of dog phased out, starting with a Gov't spaying and castration programme. Eventually laws on the measurements of a dogs, neck, jaw, head, also a category of height and weight
I want high priced licencing brought in and more dog wardens

It's about using the tragic death of an elderly woman to push your anti-dog agenda

This is now, at least, the 4th time you have made this totally unacceptable and unfounded accusation, to not just me but at least 2 other posters

I'm asking you please to stop

And how will that reduce the dangers of the majority of dog attacks? Those which which occur in the hone by known dogs, towards children?

I'm interested in your logic.

Wolfiefan · 04/04/2021 19:45

Never mind what you want.
Thankfully the government and most people don’t agree.
Dogs off lead under control is fine.
Some breeds are already banned. That’s not the answer.
We had licensing before. It didn’t help.
How many dangerous dogs are seized by dog wardens? Not many I guess.
You’re refusing to listen to sensible suggestions and aren’t willing to have a grown up discussion.
I think you may be the loon on my local FB. They berated lying dog owners who said they picked up after their dogs. They said that was a lie as they never picked up urine. Yep. They then went on to complain that the dirt was too dirty for their child to play football on.
Lunacy.

I don’t mind admitting I’m anti-dog. I’ve had too many bad experiences and it’s left me not having a good feeling.

Previous posters have admitted that they would never leave a dog alone with a child because it might “turn”. Any dog type. I’m just thinking about my own life... so if you want to nip upstairs for a wee, or put out a load of washing, you have to put your dog in another room?! I don’t really even have another room in my house I could put a dog. It seems crazy behaviour. Absolute insanity. My kids as toddlers would explore the whole house. Can they not do that if you have dogs? Kids and dogs seems a particularly insane mix in my mind.

I know one family that keep their yappy little dog that is scary as hell in a cage in their living room. What the hell is the point?! This family have invited my child over for play dates in the past and I’ve always said no. I do not trust that animal one bit.

To me, owning a dangerous dog is a bit like buying one of those dodgy tumble driers that “might” catch fire at any moment. It probably won’t but you shouldn’t leave it unattended just in case. And deffo don’t let your kids use it alone. It will be ok if you watch it all the time and properly look after it making sure it’s cleaned regularly. You could just buy a tumble drier that won’t catch fire or better still just hang your washing outside.

Then stop pushing your all dogs on lead in public spaces agenda. Or explain to me how it is remotely relevant to reducing dog attacks. It isn't

Because it's good for dog health and welfare, is legal and societally accepted.

Sorry I hadn't realised you were literally looking for someone to state the obvious.

Those are the type of measures I believe would go a long way at preventing the 8,000 admissions every year onto hospital wards of people, many of them children, suffering with "dog bite injuries"

Some years have seen a death from a dog attack every 2 months

These injuries, many of them life changing, and these deaths, are completely and totally unacceptable, and we need to do something serious about it and do it soon. Not only the actuality of a dog attack but also the everyday fear of it.

OP posts:
2021ismyyear · 04/04/2021 19:55

Can every single dog Walker guarantee that their dog won’t touch me, attack another dog, bite, jump up at me etc? Nope. So therefore every dog should be on lead in public. I don’t want to have my body touched in public by an animal. I don’t think that is unreasonable.

How?

Do you have any strategic thinking or just a faith-based assertion dependent on your confidence in your own opinion?

2021ismyyear · 04/04/2021 19:57

One of the biggest issues round here with off lead dogs is larger dogs attacking smaller ones, often resulting in costly vet bills or worse. Seems to be posted on my local Facebook pages every week or so.

Flaxmeadow · 04/04/2021 19:57

Dogs off lead under control is fine

How do we, the general public, know it's fine. Who decides that a dog is fine to be off leash, in a park for exmaple? The owners? Sorry but that just isn't good enough anymore

We need stricter laws

OP posts:
Poorlykitten · 04/04/2021 19:58

You are never going to win an argument with the bonkers dog brigade, no matter what you say to them I’m afraid. Entitled bunch who can bear the thought of having their poochy-woochy on a lead. I live in the lakes, it’s full of hundreds of these people getting cross when they are told they have to control their dogs on farmland, most ignore it and the sheep attacks just keep happening. That also seems fine because ‘their’ dogs welfare trumps that of the sheep’s life. I’d love to see the leash laws tightened. Hopefully it will change.

2021ismyyear · 04/04/2021 19:59

“Under control” yeah until they decide not to be. They aren’t robots... you can’t control every move, even if you are a “responsible owner”

@Flaxmeadow Anything other than faith and hyperbole to substantiate your approach?

If you're relying on your own belief to connect your proposed measures with an actual reduction in dog bite injuries then that's not enormously convincing.
And yes it smacks of leveraging this tragedy to promote your own agenda

Veterinari · 04/04/2021 20:03

Though for the record I totally agree about dogs and livestock. Mine are always in the lead then.

Am I still 'bonkers'?

Wolfiefan · 04/04/2021 20:05

I would like to see a political will to stamp out puppy farmers and dodgy breeders.
I would like all owners to have to commit to training sessions. Even maybe having to pass a very basic test to get a license. Dog owners need to know and abide by the law.
I would like to see those dealt with who break the law.
Society needs to change.
It’s not that we need to ban dogs or certain breeds.

2021ismyyear · 04/04/2021 20:07

Bonkers if you let you dog off lead near other humans that don’t want your animal to touch them . Let me guess your pooch is perfect! And doesn’t go sniff other dogs/humans or jump up?

Completely agree with this. A dog is not a right or an accessory.

You must be very unlucky to live in an area where dogs calmly going about their business without annoying people or other dogs isn’t something you see. It’s more the norm than not round here, even with the huge increase in ownership of designer breeds recently.

Not perfect but doesn't approach people or on-lead dogs.

Still failing to see the relevance of dogs sniffing other dogs or not, or keeping dogs in leads to this tragic death, or a reduction in dog bites generally.

Odd that no one has explained it.
But then no one here is pushing a personal agenda are they ...
