Double barrelled names?

CantFightTheBeat · 02/04/2021 21:52

Am I the only one to hate them?

Amelia-Rose or Lily-Mae etc. They’re everywhere. Someone I know recently revealed the name of their daughter and she was called similar to Amelia-Rose Mya Charlotte Smith, why so many god damn names for one kid.

I’ve also recently discovered double barrelled boys name are a thing like Charlie-James. I think I hate these more.

Please vote away and let me know if I’m unhinged.

Where I used to live 2 sisters each had 6 dc. They all had double barrelled names. Not quite sure how their ears coped...

DramaAlpaca · 02/04/2021 21:58

What you are referring to are hyphenated names. The term double-barrelled refers to surnames. So IMO you are unreasonable just for that.

I'm not a great fan of hyphenated names, unless they are the traditional classic French ones, but each to their own.

Alma2021 · 02/04/2021 22:02

The made up hyphenated names you are referring to sound very chavy.
However I don’t mind the traditional French Christian hyphenated names (eg Jean-Baptiste, Jean-Pierre, Jean-Benoit, Marie-Louise, Marie-Charlotte...).

Definitely.

CantFightTheBeat · 02/04/2021 22:13

My apologies, hyphenated names.

I dislike hyponated and double barrelled names

PandaFluff · 02/04/2021 22:23

I am indifferent to hyphenated and double barreled names.

Sparklingbrook · 02/04/2021 22:28

You can’t really help a double barrelled surname. If that’s your name.

OwlinaTree · 02/04/2021 22:29

The trend for this seems to be dying out where I live.

SisterAgatha · 02/04/2021 22:30

Who actually calls their children both names though? My kids have 2 or 3 middle names each, people only ever call them their first name or a nickname.

CantFightTheBeat · 02/04/2021 22:35

@OwlinaTree I hope it does here too

YANBU.

I did think you were going to be talking about comedy double-barrelled surnames, though. Grin

blackbettybramblejam · 02/04/2021 22:49

Yes! I have just started teaching in a local primary and it’s brimming with hyphenated names. None of which roll off the tongue easily!

ButIcantsitonleather · 02/04/2021 22:52

Double barrelled hatred ✅
“Unhinged” ✅
Asking obvious questions into an echo chamber ✅

Off to a good start on the Mumsnet bingo.

Sorry OP, people can name their children whatever they like, despite your own reservations.

incywincyspiders · 02/04/2021 22:55

I have a hyphenated name which is very 80s sounding and even though I find it cringe and would never hyphenate my child's name, anytime I go to change it on social media or whatever I feel oddly attached to it 😂 That being said, I never get called my full hyphenated name unless it's by my Mum and I'm in trouble!

tiredmum2468 · 02/04/2021 22:58

I dislike double barrelled names even more I'll be honest
If your miss Jones and you marry mr Smith
Then call yourself Jones-Smith
What's the bloody point
If you don't want someone else's name don't use it stay with your maiden name

Marriage is not about the name

AgentCooper · 02/04/2021 23:00

Previously I would have said I found them a bit unnecessary, except for French ones. Can’t beat a good Jean-Michel. But I’ve been reading the Alfie books to my DS (which my mum read to me when I was wee) and I find myself loving his wee sister’s name, Annie Rose.

NotATomato · 02/04/2021 23:05

So so so common dull now.

Every other little girl in the playground has some combination of Evie/Eva/Isla/Ava/Lily/Millie/Ellie/Ella - Rose/Grace/May.

Even more irritating (irrationally maybe) when both names have to be said at all times.

fluffythedragonslayer · 02/04/2021 23:07

There are loads of hyphenated names I really like. Anne-Marie, Sarah-Jane, Carol-Anne, Lucy-May, Sally-Anne, Emma-Jane, Ella-Grace, Daisy-May...

Not many for boys though! John-Paul is ok.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 02/04/2021 23:10

Not a fan either, many seem to have have different spellings too in an attempt to be unique.

Dislike double barralled surnames even more.

Mummadeze · 02/04/2021 23:11

I am not too keen either. Not sure why.

OppsUpsSide · 02/04/2021 23:19

I have a number of family members, across generations, with hyphenated names. They are all Travellers and actually now I think about it amongst the latest generation there aren’t any, but it is quite popular amongst the (slightly) older female population. I quite like it, the second name is usually a family name in honour of a close relative.

Jimdandy · 02/04/2021 23:20

Hyphenated name = chav

Double barrelled surname = either old posh people, chavs or 10 Bob millionaires

OppsUpsSide · 02/04/2021 23:22

My DS has a double-barrelled surname, I imagine we would come firmly under the chav/unmarried and no other male relative to continue the surname which I like and love to use in remembrance of my GF category.

Merename · 02/04/2021 23:23

I think double barrelled names are worse than hyphenated. To me, why saddle child with ridiculous sounding name in name of adults getting to feel equal. Doesn’t need to be mans name of course, but choose a whole new name if you can’t agree.
