Double barrelled names?

CantFightTheBeat · 02/04/2021 21:52

Am I the only one to hate them?

Amelia-Rose or Lily-Mae etc. They’re everywhere. Someone I know recently revealed the name of their daughter and she was called similar to Amelia-Rose Mya Charlotte Smith, why so many god damn names for one kid.

I’ve also recently discovered double barrelled boys name are a thing like Charlie-James. I think I hate these more.

Please vote away and let me know if I’m unhinged.

On mn it seems to be a bit of thing that a child needs umpteen "name options" via full name, nicknames, and middle names. I have a no middle names and a one syllable first name that can't be abbreviated or has any nicknames associated with it. My parents must have hated me.

Pinkchocolate · 02/04/2021 23:24

This is hilarious! I honestly didn’t realise people were so judgemental about names! Both of my children have hyphenated first names that are always used. The names are special to me for different reasons and I think they sound lovely!

TwoZeroTwoZero · 02/04/2021 23:25

I have a child with a hyphenated name (though we only use the first part) and we have a double-barrelled surname. 2 mn sins in one go ☑

YoniAndGuy · 02/04/2021 23:25

I’d love it though if someone called their child Hyfenn-Aytid.

FireflyRainbow · 02/04/2021 23:27

Love a double barrelled surname but double barrelled first names are always the chavy kids.

Babyfg · 02/04/2021 23:27

I couldn't get my knickers in a twist about it. It's not for me but no matter how perfect you think a name is, someone out there hates it and others will love it.

OppsUpsSide · 02/04/2021 23:29

@gottenhaitch so sorry your parents didn’t love you enough to add more syllables, my DS is probably drowning in love with the number of names he’s been saddled with, poor love. At least my DD’s can easily identify the favoured child Hmm Grin

FireflyRainbow · 02/04/2021 23:29

It's always crappy-Mae /Mai/May or crappy-Rose

TiredSloth · 02/04/2021 23:30

I don’t have dc with hyphenated names but I also don’t like to judge people (especially kids). What exactly makes them chavy in your opinion? @FireflyRainbow

FireflyRainbow · 02/04/2021 23:32

Or grace 🙈😆

TiredSloth · 02/04/2021 23:33

Wow @FireflyRainbow you just seem like an awful awful person

CricketClub · 02/04/2021 23:36

It’s always Ella-Rose/Ella-Mae Hmm
The Claire-Louise of today.

@tiredmum2468

I dislike double barrelled names even more I'll be honest If your miss Jones and you marry mr Smith Then call yourself Jones-Smith What's the bloody point If you don't want someone else's name don't use it stay with your maiden name

Marriage is not about the name

I've kept my name, but our son's surname is double barelled. He can keep them both or just choose one if he wants. So we all have different surnames in this house, well the dog has my surname and I try not to laugh whenever we are at the vets and they call her name complete with surname out Grin
Countrygirl2021 · 02/04/2021 23:37

Hyphenated names and funky spellings are very chavvy.

ClumsyPickle · 02/04/2021 23:38

You'd love me with my hyphenated first name AND double barrelled surname 😂

PrtScn · 02/04/2021 23:40

@Jimdandy

Hyphenated name = chav

Double barrelled surname = either old posh people, chavs or 10 Bob millionaires

I must be an anomally then as we are neither of those. Old maybe but not posh Grin
rainbowthoughts · 02/04/2021 23:42

What you are referring to are hyphenated names. The term double-barrelled refers to surnames. So IMO you are unreasonable just for that.

I don't know they were different!

TiredSloth · 02/04/2021 23:42

Can someone please explain to me what makes those names chavvy? Do you just mean poor people?

LindaEllen · 02/04/2021 23:43

@SisterAgatha

Who actually calls their children both names though? My kids have 2 or 3 middle names each, people only ever call them their first name or a nickname.
They're not talking about middle names. They're talking about having an actual hyphenated first name on their birth certificate. For example I know an Ella-Mae and she's kept to using both names and she's now 14.

A lot of same-sex couples double barrel, too.

I think life's too short to judge, but I do wish people wouldn't all choose the same name. Five years ago I taught a class of eight, five of whom were called Eleanor. That was ... memorable.

OppsUpsSide · 02/04/2021 23:46

Do you just mean poor people?

Haven’t met a poor one.

BanginChoons · 02/04/2021 23:47

When someone has a double barrelled surname, what happens when they get married? Treble barrell?
I don't get all the name merging. Just stick with your own.

Hyphenated first names, not my choice but whatever.

MollysMummy2010 · 02/04/2021 23:57

Anna-Marie? Chav or ok?

whiteroseredrose · 02/04/2021 23:59

I hate double barrelled surnames for many reasons, one of them is trying to trace stuff at work using the surname and date of birth.

What to put in the surname box? Smythe? Fotherington-Smythe? Fotherington - Smythe? Or Fotherington Smythe? So many blooming attempts due to IMO pretentiousness!

littlepattilou · 03/04/2021 00:01

This is a mean-spirited, spiteful, nasty thread. @CantFightTheBeat You should be ashamed of yourself for starting this These sort of threads always bring out the nasty judgemental, holier-than-thou individuals on mumsnet.

Hilarious how some people are calling people chavs and low-class for having 'certain types' of names, and yet some people on here are coming across as more low-class and way more 'common' than the people they are sneering at. I think a few people on this thread were raised in a barn!
