To think Tik Tok isn’t ok for 10 yr olds

Worried about my niece who is allowed tik tok and Instagram etc. I don’t think SiL is hot on privacy controls and my niece pulled out of a bbq at ours last night with her cousins because she wanted to make tik toks... SiL supported this decision.

AIBU to think tik tok is not appropriate for a 10 yr old?

Any advice for helping her mum to see how to keep her safer online. I’m really worried about how vulnerable she could be.

And even then, that doesn't preclude the videos that go under the radar, pretending to be safe but not.

I'm on tiktok and really like it. I see things which interest me. The algorithm is really good! Much less show ofdy than Instagram! But not for a 10 year old!

I am nearly 40 and enjoy tictock for kitchen hacks, receipes and some tips and tricks. I have been using it for at least four months so my for you page is very tailored to my interests and still daily I get video that are inappropriate. Increasingly I am seeing videos that are quite innocent but the voice over is not. I wouldn't be happy for my niece to have to deal with that but really it is a parental decision.

I find it interesting that a teacher is saying it’s okay and it’s better to teach them how to use it safely that ban it. At our primary the kids have routine internet safety talks where they are hugely warned off Tiktok ( and Snapchat) because of nasty content that is extremely difficult to police as a parent. The last talk was from the nspcc regarding the horrors of tiktok and the massive problem
with online bullying on Snapchat. Our head is very anti social media for primary aged children though snd I back her all the way.

DrWankincense · 02/04/2021 21:07

Social media is awful for younger kids.
My almost 14yo deleted TikTok because she was uncomfortable with some of the content and we talk to her constantly about what she sees online.
It isn't harmless, it isn't a good way to spend your time as an adolescent.
There are many benefits to online life, especially during these times but allowing your child to meander unchecked can be a recipe for disaster.

@ludothedog

The majority of us are in the uk. If you are in the US then I can't really comment.

ludothedog · 02/04/2021 21:37

It works in the UK too. I linked to this site as it was the first one that appeared on a google search. I'm sure you can do your own searches Wink

I’d love to know how to set it to under 13 yrs content only please!!

I'm always surprised at the amount of teachers who crop up on the FYP who are doing dance routines with students or who are filming from their classrooms...

It absolutely does not. You cannot control what is coming through.

covetingthepreciousthings · 02/04/2021 21:55

@Conditionconditioncondition

Year 3/4 teacher here. Over 50% of my pupils have Tik Tok.

Yes it's concerning but so many children have it now that it's better to work on keeping them safe online rather than just blocking something altogether

Do they actually have TikTok or just talk about it though? As I wouldn't be surprised that 50% had heard about it or watched videos on their parents phones of dance routines, but I am surprised so many have phones to have it themselves.
rainbowthoughts · 02/04/2021 21:56

Posted too soon.

I don't need to do my own searches. I was asking you to show how this can be done, because despite it being something I deal with professionally every day, I just don't seem to be able to work it out.

BrawTime · 02/04/2021 21:58

I use TikTok frequently, dp is a creator. Also have a 10 year old ds. It’s absolutely not suitable for a 10 year old.

Flumo · 02/04/2021 22:11

Would i fuck let my 10 year old have it, should be banned. Its a load of shite!!!

IndecentFeminist · 02/04/2021 22:16

I don't think that the restricted content setting is available on UK app. Only available in US

IndecentFeminist · 02/04/2021 22:20

And besides, as previously discussed there's no clarity around how videos are categorised, as far as I know it is a mixture of AI and categorisation by creator. Notoriously unreliable.

Family pairing works in the UK, which is good for restricting time spent, making sure they only friend people they know etc but doesn't truly restrict the FYP.

Ionacat · 03/04/2021 08:26

If they log into TikTok via a browser then none of the restrictions work - they only work in the app. (Not that they work that well anyway as previous posters have said.)
Check your kids internet history regularly and add the site to banned sites ideally via your router.

I know some of my DD’s friends have it and therefore my DD is going to get some exposure to it, but we‘ve explained why she can’t have it and regularly check her devices anyway. It does help that DH works in internet security and has explained why it isn’t safe.
