I've gone to M & S and Sainsbury's this afternoon, and there are no Easter eggs left . Literally none at all. Why??

I have found myself in three different Co-ops over the last few days - they still had a good selection.

BlackCatShadow · 02/04/2021 06:42

@silverstrawberry

This happened to us last year it sucked ! Especially with 5 kids they just had small hollow colourful eggs so I'm well stocked your just gonna have to start in February next year because I swear people getting ready in January Happy Easter tho 🐣
I feel like this!

I usually start buying Halloween stuff at the beginning of September. By mid-October, the Christmas stuff is started to appear in the shops and by the end of December, it's Valentine's Day stuff and then by mid-February, it's the Easter stuff. It's just the way things are. i think if you wait until a few days before an event, you may be lucky and get a few bargains, but you may find everything sold out. It's definitely a risk!

LalalaLa20 · 02/04/2021 06:51

Yes the Easter eggs have been on sale since January 1st, including mini eggs. I work in a supermarket and this is the first year I have seen them sell out completely prior to the day however this is good news as wont have hundreds to reduce to ridiculous prices on Monday so I think the stock level has been planned perfectly tbh. Our staff were spoken To like crap yesterday and having to apologise for selling out when we really wanted to say “sorry you’ve had 3 months to buy your eggs so I have no sympathy you left it too late” 🙈

Thewinterofdiscontent · 02/04/2021 06:55

The real problem is that Easter eggs are rubbish these days.
Horrible over branded packaging and nothing INSIDE the egg.
I have to buy a Quality Street egg every year because it’s the only one with chocolates inside the shell.

I also despise the the pathetic hollow eggs with something like jelly beans or fudge squares melted into the shell. Not only do you get a hollow sham of an an egg you don’t even get a full chocolate shell. Meh.

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 02/04/2021 06:59

Still some left when I was shopping yesterday afternoon. I don't blame shops for running out as they are not things you can sell many of next week.

GraduallyWatermelon · 02/04/2021 06:59

They decide how many to buy in based on last years sales figures. Obviously last year we were in lockdown, and thus not many sold.

Not really - it's based on a number of figures and predictions. Supermarket buyers get paid a lot of money to do more complex calculations than "just get what we sold last year"!

HugeAckmansWife · 02/04/2021 07:04

I don't really get the 'I should have been more organised' thing. Its not like you have to go to a special one off shop for them. They've been in normal food shops for months, as you walk through the door, or available online. It's not really a matter of being organised surely? Just deciding at some point in the last 8 weeks oh I'll chuck those in the trolley next to the cat food.

Yes most supermarkets have a seasonal aisle where they've been 'hiding' the eggs for ages. it's just a case of going down it. Grin
ShadierThanaPalmTree · 02/04/2021 07:11

I've seen loads of women on my local facebook group asking to swap old shoes, a bookcase, dvds etc for Easter Eggs, and I thought to myself are they really in that short supply this year or is everyone just badly organised? You have to buy them weeks in advance these days!

Not necessarily if you're shopping with kids, and online shopping they had a small window when they'd deliver them. These are both an issue for me, though in all honesty I always do it late because if I get them too early I end up eating them GrinSad
Sansaplans · 02/04/2021 07:15

@FlossieTeacakesFurCoat18

I was just thinking this today! It's so annoying. Not everyone will have their eggs yet, and I used to love getting them cheap afterwards 😋
Haha we used to do this, get them half price after Easter!
Sparklingbrook · 02/04/2021 07:17

So many posters that have no control over eating Easter eggs if they buy them early. I don't think they can then complain about there being no availability now if that's the case. Grin You had your chance to still have those eggs.
Stick them in the loft or ask someone to look after them for you maybe?

I think if I had spare Easter eggs and there were in short supply, I'd be expecting to swap them for something a lot better than someone else's rubbish.
BarbaraofSeville · 02/04/2021 07:22

Well at least this thread has reminded me that I bought DP (who likes the type of marzipan that you can only usually get at Christmas and now Easter) a couple of marzipan eggs from Lidl weeks ago and threw them in the back of my wardrobe so I need to retrieve them some time this weekend to give to him.

KatherineJaneway · 02/04/2021 07:22

Retailers got wise to those shoppers who'd wait for the last minute to buy at discount or buy after the event at discount. They now do their best to sell out before the event.

Sparklingbrook · 02/04/2021 07:27

If I owned a shop I would want to sell all the Easter Eggs at full price before Easter, and would not want to have any left or be selling them at a loss afterwards. It's just good business sense.

Rewis · 02/04/2021 07:29

My bf was suppose send me one from an online store. However within the time he decided wether to get yorkie or aero everything had been sold out

ServeTheServants · 02/04/2021 07:30

Yes, absolutely cleared out here too (Asda, Sainsburys and Tesco’s). Luckily I bought mine a couple of weeks ago, but I’d hoped to buy a few bags of mini eggs to make a cheesecake...however, no joy!! Managed to get a few supermarket own brand ones, but not sure it’ll be the same 😂

I’ve never seen the shelves cleared like this. There are usually so many discounted eggs available in the week afterwards.

Inthevirtualwaitingroom · 02/04/2021 07:36

i saw them in lidl on monday but did not consider buying until a mad panic on wednesday

OverTheRainbow88 · 02/04/2021 07:40

Yup, we are also Easter eggless. Well until I picked my son up and nursery yesterday and they gave him an egg... which I then ate as thought I would get some last night! 😬

Changeismyname · 02/04/2021 07:42

My local petrol station had loads. Try somewhere like that.

That's true to a degree, but you also wouldn't want to be turning people away who have come to your shop wanting to spend money on things you didn't buy enough of.

I think a small over-order is probably more profitable than running out of Easter eggs a week before Easter.

Sparklingbrook · 02/04/2021 07:44

I would tell them all to buy early to avoid disappointment @MrsTophamHat Grin

Mablefly · 02/04/2021 07:46

Our large Asda was sold out yesterday so we picked up other chocolate instead.

And for everyone saying 'be more organised', for many it was payday yesterday so it's a matter of cash flow. I picked up some earlier in the month but needed to wait until payday to grab the last few.

NoParticularPattern · 02/04/2021 07:52

I struggled to get any several weeks ago. Ordered them on my usual morrisons shop for all the nieces/nephews/kids/cousins etc etc and only 2 were available. This was a shop that was delivered a fortnight ago- the first one available with Easter eggs to purchase- and was placed two weeks prior to that. I got less than 20% of what I had ordered so had to drag my 9 months pregnant self and two toddlers out to actual morrisons (albeit a tiny town one!) to get them where there were plenty. I’m not really sure what else I could have done- ordered the eggs two weeks prior to arrive two weeks before I needed them and that still apparently wasn’t enough notice for morrisons.

Mind you they sent me weetabix as a sub for chocolate hobnobs yesterday so I’m beginning to question their intelligence in general
