You can just say 'my husband' or 'my daughter', you know, instead of bloody 'DH' or 'DD'. WE WILL STILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND YOU!

How refreshing would it be, just for once, to see someone here state 'my husband' instead of their 'DH'?!

It's such a sappy wet-lettuce thing to say anyway, plus half the bloody time there are threads about how someone's 'darling' husband has been found to be texting some other woman/cam girl/sex worker, etc

It's as though people here think nobody will be able to understand them unless they preface the person they're talking about with 'darling'. WHY?!

WHEN WILL WE STOP THE TWATTERY?

OP posts:

I'm in the tiny minority with the OP, but it's a lost cause. In olden days when there was no autocomplete, maybe it saved time, but I find it hard to believe that most people posting on a phone are saving any time using DH etc now.

Confusing too at times. DS - son, sister? DD - daughter or dog? DN - niece/nephew or neighbour? DF - friend, father or fiance? DS10 - your tenth son or your son, who is 10?

Always brings me up short when I see DCs. It stands for Dear Children, not Childs!

StopGuacAndRoll · 01/04/2021 19:12

‘DD2’

Your second daughter or your daughter aged 2?

DailyCandy · 01/04/2021 19:13

Sometimes I forget to use the required acronyms. And I think people must think I'm new here. I'm not. Been doing this for 10 yrs plus.

Nanny0gg · 01/04/2021 19:13

@justasking111

Was stumped today by one post using the following acronyms I did google to start with but was no wiser Grin

NRP
EOW
RP
STAHP

Non-resident parent Every other week Resident parent Stay at home parent (I think)

I'm on a PC. No auto-complete
ZoeCM · 01/04/2021 19:14

They're not required, I never use them.

PhillipPhillop · 01/04/2021 19:14

@StopGuacAndRoll

‘DD2’

Your second daughter or your daughter aged 2?

Age in brackets makes it quite clear dd1(5) and dd2(2).
LeSquigh · 01/04/2021 19:15

I agree, it IS ridiculous, especially when people use things like DDog etc because its not an abbreviation!

I also haven't seen it on any other websites or forums, despite claims on here that it is all over the internet.

I have voted YANBU BUT YABU to think you can get away with starting a thread on it because the Mumsnet masses will NOT have it.

Bluebird2021 · 01/04/2021 19:16

so let me get this right, op (can i call the op an 'op',is that ok?? can i use the shorthand 'ok' as well?) expects us to stop using well known internet shorthand but its fine to use the word 'meh' which was made up on the Simpsons tv show in America?

is that right?

littlepattilou · 01/04/2021 19:17

Oooh I am dying to know what @MsAnnFrope said. That was deleted fast!

Chicchicchicchiclana · 01/04/2021 19:17

Ah, the regular "you're all twats about the dh thing" thread. Good to see internet trundling on as normal, kind of reassuring in a way.

not that long ago, I'm sure there have been others in the meantime

PhillipPhillop · 01/04/2021 19:17

But ddog IS an abbreviation. Of 'my dog', 'our dog' etc. You wouldn't just say 'I took dog to the vet'.

Changemaname1 · 01/04/2021 19:19

I don’t have a dh or dp so sort of doesn’t apply to me , done night stand Doesn’t have the same effect I feel Wink

I hear you op

It warms the cockles doesn't it? People are back to whingeing about inconsequential stuff. Hurrah!
Abraxan · 01/04/2021 19:19

Hmmm, I've been using Mumsnet (and another parenting site for a year or so before that) both of which have used dh/Dd/dc/ds as shorthand for about 18 years.

I do get confused when people use Ds for sister or Df for friend, rather than father, as it can be tricky to figure out who they're talking about initially.

Think it's probably fairly inbuilt now. I have to remember not to type,it when writing them elsewhere.

Not sure a MN thread is going to knock the habit out of me after so long tbh.

jessstan2 · 01/04/2021 19:19

I never do the DH or DS thing. It doesn't take any time at all to type in full and the acronyms are SO STUPID.

We are grown up people.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 01/04/2021 19:20

I saw a Dfish once...

littlepattilou · 01/04/2021 19:20

@PhillipPhillop

DDOG and DCAT may be shorter than The dog or The cat, but it just sounds stupid. Confused
Abraxan · 01/04/2021 19:21

@StopGuacAndRoll

‘DD2’

Your second daughter or your daughter aged 2?

Used to always mean second daughter. I find it confusing when people start using it as age.

For a two year old daughter I'd have written 2y DD.

Oh yes we will!

Chunkymenrock · 01/04/2021 19:22

I NEVER write anything other than husband, daughter etc. DH etc is fucking ridiculous.

Sparklingbrook · 01/04/2021 19:22

We are grown up people

Too right and we can type whatever we like thankfully, and not even notice what anyone else does.

Doris86 · 01/04/2021 19:23

Surprised to see the poll is at 40% agreeing that the original poster is not being unreasonable by saying this. It shows the use of these acronyms is not as generally accepted on here as I thought.

Reinventinganna · 01/04/2021 19:23

Are you new (to mn and the internet in general)?

'The Mumsnet masses'. That's the masses of people that disagree with the Original Poster presumably? Grin
