You can just say 'my husband' or 'my daughter', you know, instead of bloody 'DH' or 'DD'. WE WILL STILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND YOU!

How refreshing would it be, just for once, to see someone here state 'my husband' instead of their 'DH'?!

It's such a sappy wet-lettuce thing to say anyway, plus half the bloody time there are threads about how someone's 'darling' husband has been found to be texting some other woman/cam girl/sex worker, etc

It's as though people here think nobody will be able to understand them unless they preface the person they're talking about with 'darling'. WHY?!

WHEN WILL WE STOP THE TWATTERY?

It'd almost be worth getting a big snake as a pet just to be able to refer to ones DReticulatedPython. Grin

BlackeyedSusan · 02/04/2021 23:02

these threads come round regularly along withthe ones complaining about the swearing. I prefer those. much more fun...

mswales · 02/04/2021 23:06

it is the most twee twattery, indeed. Always surprised more people don't find it cringey

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 02/04/2021 23:09

ErrolTheDragon surely more fun to write a wide eyed innocent post about whether to let DS eat live mice ...

DdraigGoch · 02/04/2021 23:21

Is "DD" referring to one's daughter, father or dog?
Is "DS" referring to one's son or sister?

It's too confusing.

MrsMackesy · 03/04/2021 02:09

My favourite? DShitland height of irony
My nightmare? Hubbibobs - ie Hollibobs with Hubby kill me now

partyatthepalace · 03/04/2021 02:28

It’s shorthand. Don’t use it if you don’t like it - but the twattery is yours.

Sparklingbrook · 03/04/2021 04:19

@DdraigGoch

Is "DD" referring to one's daughter, father or dog? Is "DS" referring to one's son or sister?

It's too confusing.

It’s all in the context and not confusing at all. DF is used for father never seen DD for that.

DS 99% of the time is son.

You get used to it to the point you don’t even notice or think about it any more.

PennyFalls · 03/04/2021 06:08

The prefix D could be dropped.
If we need it shouldn't STBXH be STBDXH?

Crepescular · 03/04/2021 07:10

@Hankunamatata

Its much easier to type dh when u have small people running about and your typing it one handed?
And 'small people' is pretty twee too, unless you're referring to people with achondroplasia or spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita.
Chanjer · 03/04/2021 08:31

Mostly just think it's funny

MN wouldn't be MN without the nonsense abbreviations

Despite people saying it's standard internet shorthand I've never seen it in straight faced use anywhere else except on another forum I use where people will do an MN "style" thread occasionally

BraveGoldie · 03/04/2021 08:43

It caused me all kind of headaches when I first arrived - couldn't understand anything anyone said! Now it just feels convenient and quicker. But I still type the full versions, if I am not in a rush. 🙂

FunnyWonder · 03/04/2021 08:53

I don't mind the acronyms, provided I don't think too much about what they actually stand for. Dear and darling make me want to barf, but my brain has gotten used to DP for partner, DS for son etc as I no longer break them down. Dcat and Ddog are ridiculous because they are increasing the keystrokes, but some posters use them with aplomb and really make me laugh.

Perhaps BP, BH etc could be introduced with B standing for Bastard, for those occasions when they're really getting on every last shred of your nervesGrin

MrsMackesy · 03/04/2021 08:59

@Twiglets1

I've only just started using Mumsnet and I must admit while some of the disussions are interesting, certain elements are cringe and this is one of them.

Also, Mumsnet? The title needs updating to reflect the fact we are more than just mums. Some may not be mums at all, some may even be Dads. Isn't everyone welcome?

There's plenty of room for everyone around the table. If posters like this one and the OP - both seemingly brand new on here - spent more time getting to know and contributing to the site - ie getting their feet under the table first instead of jumping straight in with what they don't like, want to change and just repeating old threads - they might realise that.

Now that's 'cringe', if we're going to use an expression more juvenile and irritating than all the acronyms put together, IMHO. Wink

@DdraigGoch

Is "DD" referring to one's daughter, father or dog? Is "DS" referring to one's son or sister?

It's too confusing.

Exactly. The person writing it knows exactly what they mean, but anyone reading it is often left guessing.

How much more effort is it to write Son, rather than DS?

SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 03/04/2021 14:39

Indeed mrsmacksey

I see no harm in dear whatevery. Whether it be children/husbands/parents/pets.

Some of us do not have children or partners and our pet is what can be dear to us, hence ddog/dcat/ dtortoise/dsnake/dhorse etc.

But saying something is ‘cringe’ sounds worse than any of the danythings. Wink
