I feel like itโ€™s ruined me for all other box sets ๐Ÿ˜ž

Why are people saying "it wasn't funny" like it's not a subjective view?

WomenAreBornNotWorn · 30/03/2021 22:11

Ricky Gervais is genius at reading people and their nuances. I can't watch his stand up stuff, but I love the way way he can have you laughing one minute, then ugly crying the next. When so much tv now is paper thin and skin deep RG make people interesting again.

MinnieMous3 · 30/03/2021 22:11

@cardibach

Itโ€™s very personal. And Iโ€™ve never seen it. Ricky Gervais is an unfunny arse though, so thereโ€™s that. Which is the reason Iโ€™ve never seen it. I suspect Iโ€™d find many, many ,many things funnier to be honest. Iโ€™ve seen clips. Shit slapstick. Slapstick is shit anyway and he doesnโ€™t do it well. Or else nasty, nasty bullying jokes. Heโ€™s a twat.
Well I dunno youโ€™re the one calling someone you donโ€™t know a twat on the internet ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

I think either you โ€˜getโ€™ observational comedy or you donโ€™t. If you donโ€™t then youโ€™ll find it cringey, blatant and just odd.

I thought the Office was unbelievably unfunny

Schonerlebnis · 30/03/2021 22:49

Love The Detectorists.
Binge watched Afterlife, soft spot for Derek but cringeworthy.
Two doors down hilarious but a bit samey after 5 series and the xmas special was a bit of a let down.
Vaguely remember drop the dead donkey and black book in the ? 90s but they've probably dated.
Early doors with craig cash late 90s was pretty funny,

For the same reason people are saying that it is.
GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 30/03/2021 22:59

No because itโ€™s god awful and depressing.

KeflavikAirport · 31/03/2021 08:28

I loved the office and David Brentโ€™s redemption arc in the Xmas special is amazingly clever TV.

So simple yet perfect for the moment.

I absolutely love The Office, its proper comfort TV for me! Also, I used to work in an office very similar, and they just nailed some of the characters.

The episode where they do the training course is just so funny!

'Gareth, quick trust exercise, ultimate fantasy'....

The Christmas special was very good. I'm pleased that Dawn ditched her horrible boyfriend eventually.
I even enjoyed ' life on the road' even if bits were stolen from Alan Partridge.

Love the UK office but the American version (post season 1) in my view is funnier.

Steve Carrell is great as the slightly more empathetic version of David Brent and Dwight as his sidekick are comedy gold.

So gutted when Michael Scott left. Will Ferrell was great for his guest stint and James Spader was hysterically creepy but it did dwindle.

If you haven't given a try, I absolutely recommend it (but I know it's like marmite to those who love the UK version)

namesnamesnamesnames · 31/03/2021 08:55

A comedy I really enjoyed recently was Derry Girls. Brilliant writing.

Shinesun14 · 31/03/2021 08:58

I love the office but it makes me cringe to much for it to be my favourite.

I love peep show, father Ted, VoD, abs fab, 2 pints of larger and a packet of crisps, after life, royal family ect. I love the inbetweeners too, sex education was hilarious!

American comedy sitcoms - fraiser is the best and its aged well. I don't like a lot of their sitcoms but I do like an Adam Sandler film - happy Gilmore is my favourite

icelollies · 31/03/2021 09:05

โ€˜Episodesโ€™

I laughed so much at this series, brilliant and I so recommend for a good laugh. Stephen Mangan and Tamsin Greig are great in it.

I also liked The Office, not sure I could watch it again now though!

AllTheWayFromLondonDAMN · 31/03/2021 09:11

We are rewatching PJDN at the moment and you can see how heavily influenced they were by The Office, especially in Grindahโ€™s character and Allan Mustafaโ€™s delivery. I think itโ€™s marvellous and definitely up there in terms of U.K. comedies of the past 30 years. As is The Office.

Iโ€™d say a definitive list of comedies of the past 30 yearsish would be

  • The Office
  • People Just Do Nothing
  • This Country (genius, a must watch if youโ€™ve not seen it)
  • Peep Show (although a bit flabby in places as it went on for so long)
  • The Thick of It (which is utter genius and not a wasted line or scene in my opinion)
  • Alan Partridge (in all his guises but particular the sitcoms from when he lives in the travel tavern right up to his presenting role on This Time)
  • Grandmaโ€™s House (criminally underrated)
  • Flight of the Conchords

Iโ€™m also another one with a soft spot for the US version of The Office too. I didnโ€™t expect to like it, in fact I was a total snob about it..... but itโ€™s actually brilliant.

Mugginyouleftrightandcentre · 31/03/2021 09:14

Alan Partridge is my other 'comfort telly', I just love it!

the80sweregreat · 31/03/2021 09:15

Grandmas house was bonkers , but very funny.
I also liked Mum even if I did want to do horrible things to Kelly and the nasty sister in law at times.

Episodes! I'm so glad someone else has said it, I watched it in one long binge last year and I loved it. It was definitely one of those that I was a little bereft when I'd finished it.
I absolutely adore Daisy Haggard in it, she really steals every scene she's in, considering she has such a small part Grin

It's on Netflix if anyone is interested

YerAWizardHarry01 · 31/03/2021 09:43

You will never post on another thread like this again. Fact.

KeflavikAirport · 31/03/2021 09:54

With the redemption arc I was also thinking of how he said he was stitched up by the documentary makers and got a second date with the nice lady who thought he was funny ๐Ÿ˜Š

Tal45 · 31/03/2021 10:11

Love The Office and Extras. Also love This Country - the random acts of kindness episode is my favourite. Blackadder 3 and 4 are amazing, love Miranda. I must try Peep show and Black books.

MinnieMous3 · 31/03/2021 10:13

I think my favourite episode of This Country has to be Scarecrow or GNVQ. โ€˜Iโ€™m not the one who keeps going on about my rock hard ball bag mateโ€™

Started watching PJDN, starting to get into it now. Itโ€™s quite depressing but funny
