I feel like itโ€™s ruined me for all other box sets ๐Ÿ˜ž

I found The Office cringey and Ricky Gervais embarrassing. Probably Red Dwarf and Kath &Kim have made me laugh the most. I loved Green Wing and Hot Metal (going back a bit there).

@MAPEI

I thought this country was alright (grew up in a small village and so it does have a nostalgic element for me) but the whole time I was watching it I just thought...theyโ€™re totally copying the office?! SO much of it was โ€˜borrowedโ€™ from it that it just felt a bit...meh and unoriginal.
This is where The Office was so influential. Whether its aged well or not, it redefined the sitcom.

No mention of the Royle Family? That's timeless.

annacondom · 29/03/2021 22:35

Oh yes, Rising Damp was good. And Reggie Perrin.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 29/03/2021 22:37

The US version is far funnier and has 9 series.

Modern family also funnier

Motherland blows them all out of the water

NiceGerbil · 29/03/2021 22:39

Royle family
Early doors
I liked 2 pints of lager and a packet of crisps, similar vein

MsFogi · 29/03/2021 22:39

Nothing beats Gavin and Stacey

Shopliftersoftheworldunite · 29/03/2021 22:40

I liked the U.K. one bit could never get into the us version.

Itโ€™s quite dated now but it reminds me of university and happy times!

Atalantea · 29/03/2021 22:40

@SachaStark

For more recent sitcoms, I found Ghosts to be an absolute gem! Like, unexpectedly good.
It's soo good!!

Also, Derry Girls

User133847 · 29/03/2021 22:43

Love Man Down too

expectopelargonium · 29/03/2021 22:49

Ahem. Dad's Army. Just sayin'.

Having said that, I'm quite partial to a cornetto.

Cannotgarden · 29/03/2021 22:51

Silicon valley is brlliant.
Currently watching him and her and it is very close to home and so so good. I even feel like I'd never need to know what happened to Becky and Steve because DH and I are them Blush

Chickychickydodah · 29/03/2021 22:51

The office was tripe. Ricky gervace makes my skin crawl ๐Ÿคข

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 29/03/2021 22:53

I love it too op. My funniest sitcoms are Curb Your Enthusiasm, This Country and Still Game. The US Office starts well but gets awful towards the last seasons.

annie335 · 29/03/2021 22:55

This Country and Motherland are my go-tos when I want to forget about life and have a giggle.

Krazynights34 · 29/03/2021 22:56

The Office was of its time. Cringe, funny, sad.
Lots of PPs have mentioned great shows:
This Country
Anything Alan Partridge (especially the later ones) and the Trip series
People Just Do Nothing but it takes a while
Peep Show is funny but used to make me feel ill
The Thick of It (swearing is an art form)
I canโ€™t remember the name but the guy from Toast of London as a Victorian detective

TheBullfinch · 29/03/2021 22:57

I find all the above just mildly amusing, apart from the office, which I find excruciating.

Might be my age though as I grew up with the following legends:

Only Fools & Horses
Porridge
Rising Damp
Black Adder
Acorn Antiques
Father Ted
Phoenix Nights

I'm sure I've missed others but these stand out the most. I think Rising Damp can still leave me in stitches.

Krook · 29/03/2021 22:57

Ricky Gervais is a genius, Extras is fantastic, as is After Life, as is Derek.
The Office is supposed to be cringy to watch, that's the point.

Others than that our UK faves are Gavin & Stacey, Peep Show, IT Crowd, This Country, The Detectorists.

US favourites are Curb Your Enthusiasm, Modern Family, Schitt's Creek

TheFiend · 29/03/2021 22:57

Canโ€™t believe no ones put Keeping Up Appearances yet. Hyacinth Bucket was, imho, one of the funniest characters ever written. Not a single boring episode in the whole show.

MAPEI · 29/03/2021 22:57

Ohhh yes, The Royale Family, absolutely brilliant!!

Another one I used to love was Gimmie, Gimmie, Gimmie!

MinnieMous3 · 29/03/2021 22:59
