I feel like itโ€™s ruined me for all other box sets ๐Ÿ˜ž

Enjoyed the UK version of the office when it first came out but sadly it has not aged well.My favoutitr comedies are in no particular order...One foot in the grave,Keeping up appearances,2point 4 children, only fools and horses, drifters, superstore, the job lot, dinnerladies, bad education, big school ,the vicar of Dibley and Miranda.surprised no one mentioned 2 point 4 children it always makes me laugh out loud.A bit surreal in parts but hilarious. One of my favourite episodes is where they find the warehouse full of Shirley Basseys dresses.Absolute classic. And i think its aged well.A lot of the themes of the show are still relevant today.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 30/03/2021 05:59

This Country and Kath and Kim are my recommendations.

Blessex · 30/03/2021 06:27

Black adder series 2 and 3. The Office was a defining moment. Motherland. Fleabag. The latter is the only one I watched fully through again.

I really donโ€™t get Friday Night Dinner. My kids watch it and think itโ€™s funny. I find it just a bit stupid. I feel the same with One Foot In the Grave and Keeping Up Appearances.

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 30/03/2021 07:19

There may be other things that are funnier, but it was original (since copied in a way) and to his credit, Ricky Gervais did only two (or three) series. As with all his work, he does not go on for ever and lose the impact. For example, Not Going Out has had 11 series (according to I Player) and I bet My Family was almost as many.

BigPaperBag · 30/03/2021 07:30

God I LOATHE that show. I found one recently that Ricky Gervais is in where heโ€™s working in a care home and itโ€™s done In the same style. That was turned off very quickly as it was just as rubbish.

TheMarzipanDildo · 30/03/2021 07:40

The office is so good but sooo painful. Extras is brilliant IMO. I am a big RG fan.

Other than those the IT Crowd and Father Ted are my favourites.

User133847 · 30/03/2021 07:58

Rewatching Drop the Dead Donkey on Britbox, that's really good.

Watched The Day Today again on Youtube recently, that's really hysterical.

KeflavikAirport · 30/03/2021 08:14

Another vote for Detectorists.

LagneyandCasey · 30/03/2021 08:22

I love UK The Office for its nostalgic value but the US The Office is a class above. The brilliantly rounded characters all develop so well over the 9 series and it elevated to superstar level when Cathy Bates arrived. Steve Carell is a genius actor, his facial expressions are all that's needed at times to get everything he's feeling across. I cried at his last episode. I've probably watched the whole lot 4 or 5 times over the years.

Car Share is superb. I could watch it over and over. There are some great outtakes on youtube.

Two Doors Down is hilarious. The neighbours are cheeky buggers but you can't help but adore them.

Dinnerladies is wonderful. Like a funny comfort blanket. So bittersweet watching the wonderful Victoria Wood. Ditto with The Royle Family and Caroline Ahern and Liz Smith.

I discovered Shitt's Creek in lockdown. I adore that family as much as my own!

The Middle is great too. Not really a comedy series but it has plenty of laughs. Parents muddling through the teen years know how hard and soul destroying it can be but there are humourous and downright bizarre moments too. The Middle conveys that perfectly.

SoupDragon · 30/03/2021 08:29

I hated The Office (UK). Truly awful. I've never watched the US one.

Friday Night Dinner and Life in Pieces are two that I think are far superior.

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 30/03/2021 08:34

The office has NOT aged well particularly with respect to the way the female characters are treated by the male characters. But then the office i worked in is disgustingly misogynistic so maybe it's true to life.

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 30/03/2021 08:39

This country is amazing.

ceilingsand · 30/03/2021 08:54

I liked Peep Show.

Huh? Itโ€™s a comedy, it isnโ€™t supposed to be moral guidance.

I like the UK one but not the US one.

Derry Girls is probably my favourite of the newer shows.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 30/03/2021 08:59

Another vote for Yes Minister and the original Spitting Image was groundbreaking and hilarious.

That was the whole point even at the time though - Gervais pointing the ridiculousness of this out. It was a reflection of what was happening and how it shouldn't have been!
MAPEI · 30/03/2021 09:02

Vicar of Dibley I used to love too!

But nothing beats The Office for me sob

That's what Gervais does. He pokes fun at people who are misogynistic, ageist, sexist, homophobic, disablist, racist.. etc Watch any of his earlier stand up shows in and you'll get it.
malificent7 · 30/03/2021 09:07

This country had me in stitches...Mandy and her tattoo "business"! Grin

the80sweregreat · 30/03/2021 09:10

Ricky Gervais is a love him or hate him character but you have to admit he was good in this and the writing with Stephen Merchant was very well thought out. My sons prefer the American office and made me watch one. It wasn't as good , but then I find American comedy too try hard. The English 'the office' is actually quite sad in places. The horrible creepy bloke in it is cringe and I was glad when Brent took him down a peg in the Christmas special

Afterlife is a real gem : the second series was on when I lost my own dad and I just cried and cried. Again, not to everyone's taste and a lot more swearing, but I just loved it and the dog !

the80sweregreat · 30/03/2021 09:14

This country is funny. I know it's another mockumentry , but it felt real!
Mandy was hysterical and very scary too.
' what's in the bag , mand ?'
' a pillow and a brick '
Cracks me up.

iamtheoneandonlyyy · 30/03/2021 09:16

Les Dennis on Extras is genuinely brilliant. Its excellent

You've clearly never watched Friday Night Dinner!
poorbuthappy · 30/03/2021 09:17

We watched Dinnerladies not long ago.
It's truly sublime.

I miss Victoria Wood.
