To think nothing will ever be as funny as The Office

I feel like itโ€™s ruined me for all other box sets ๐Ÿ˜ž

OP posts:
Sillysandy · 30/03/2021 09:21

I voted YANBU as I thought the UK series was utterly genius and nothing has since entertained me as much as it did back then.

Ironically I don't find it funny now. I can't really explain it.

the80sweregreat · 30/03/2021 09:23

Les Dennis is very unrated in general. I think that the whole business with his ex Amanda Holden and generally being seen as a bit of wimp didn't help his career much in the past. He is brilliant in Extras.
I watched an old episode of Butterflies the other day and found it funny and sad too. It was comedy that meant something , but then I'm not a fan of slapstick.
The very early ' not going out' ones were good but that went downhill!

rooarsome · 30/03/2021 09:24

I didn't like the UK version but the US one had me rolling. The fire drill scene is incredible

Neolara · 30/03/2021 09:25

I really enjoyed The Detectorists.

the80sweregreat · 30/03/2021 09:29

The Detectorists is also very good.
I love Toby Jones in that.

the80sweregreat · 30/03/2021 09:32

Julia in Motherland is just a female Basil Fawlty !
Very funny though. Love the stay at home dad in his high vis.

waterlego · 30/03/2021 09:32

@JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows, that video is hilarious. When he is sitting astride that massive branch ๐Ÿ˜‚ And every time he points or gestures to something just in case it isnโ€™t clear to us viewers what heโ€™s referring to. So funny!

DressyNessy · 30/03/2021 09:35

I agree The Office was genius, it was so different to anything else at the time. The characters were completely realistic

I couldnโ€™t watch the US one as it seemed fake in comparison.

Parts of it were excruciatingly sad, David Brent was a tragic character really, and the Dawn storyline had me in tears at times.

bumbleymummy · 30/03/2021 09:36

US one, yes. UK one, not really.

waterlego · 30/03/2021 09:37

I love The Office, Peep Show and The Mighty Boosh. I also recall โ€˜Nighty Nightโ€™ being funny, albeit quite dark.

A couple that I have never been able to โ€˜getโ€™ which lots of other people rave about are Friday Night Dinner and League of Gentleman. I just found the latter so creepy and grim.

PattyPan · 30/03/2021 09:37

Yabu
Nothing with Ricky Gervais in is funny

BrownEyedGirl80 · 30/03/2021 09:39

The Royle Family is brilliant. As a northerner I can relate to everything that its about.

MissingLinker · 30/03/2021 10:05

Didn't mind the office but couldn't quite warm to it.
My favourites, in no particular order:
Green Wing
League of Gentlemen
Only Fools and Horses
Father Ted
IT Crowd
Yes, Minister
Ghosts (because I'm basically a ten year old and "FANNY'S EXPOSED!" has me pissing myself laughing every time.
Raised by Wolves

I think the worst I've seen in recent years is Motherland. Insipid load of shite, slightly redeemed by Diane Morgan. It was recommended to me by a friend on the basis "You have children, don't you? You'll like this." Christ. The funniest part was reading the threads about it on here with the split between
"Oh, it's SO relatable!"
And
"But they're all meant to be dislikeable. It's an exaggeration- no one's really that useless."

MissingLinker · 30/03/2021 10:15

Oh, and The Thick of It! Not sure how I forgot about that.

nursejekyll · 30/03/2021 11:02

Agree with the Royle Family being brilliant.

ZiggyBaby · 30/03/2021 12:42

@Chicchicchicchiclana

This Country and Kath and Kim are my recommendations.
"Now i've got one word to say to you ..."
DynamoKev · 30/03/2021 12:51

@poorbuthappy

We watched Dinnerladies not long ago. It's truly sublime.

I miss Victoria Wood.

Me too
worried3012 · 30/03/2021 13:27

I thought the office was hilarious ! Love it and always watch it when I'm in need of a lift. I tried the US one but the early episodes are literally copied from the Uk one so I just lost interest.
I also love Fawlty Towers - I love British sarcasm.

Saying that I also love The Fresh Prince of Bel Air Grin

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 30/03/2021 13:35

We found The Thick Of It hilarious.
Ditto โ€˜2012โ€™, about the Olympics, when many were still thinking there would be a load of cock ups, if it wasnโ€™t a total disaster.

LH1987 · 30/03/2021 13:35

Parks and recreation has made me laugh out loud this week.

Love the office too though.

catpoooffender · 30/03/2021 13:38

The Office is amazing. Extras is also great, though not quite as classic. Derek and After Life are also brilliant. The whole back catalogue of Ricky Gervais show podcasts is worth a list.

The only non-RG thing that comes close is This Country, which is fantastic in its own right.

whenthebellsring · 30/03/2021 16:54

Loved Dinnerladies.

Can't forget the scene where the man was standing there for ages, waiting for a cup of tea and the women were chatting away.

He finally said something like 'Give me the tea bag then and I'll just suck it on the way down!'๐Ÿ˜‚

He said about 3 other different lines in between them chatting and him asking for a cup of tea before he got to that last line and each of them was funny. You had to feel sorry for him while laughing at the same time.

CherryCherries · 30/03/2021 16:58

Is it something where you had to work in office to get the humour? Because I didn't find it funny at all. Guess you had to be there type thing.

merryhouse · 30/03/2021 16:59

It wasn't funny. I'm pretty sure it wasn't supposed to be Funny.

It was acerbic, but it didn't make me laugh.

RavingAnnie · 30/03/2021 17:02

I LOVED The Office - U.K. not US. Can't believe some people think the US one was better. It was terrible. Couldn't watch it.

What about Gavin and Stacey? Comedy gold and has that mix of sad, romance and funny.
