To think nothing will ever be as funny as The Office

I feel like itโ€™s ruined me for all other box sets ๐Ÿ˜ž

The Office is funny but not one I watch on repeat. It brings back too many memories of temping in offices on trading estates with people who were worse than David Brent. I even worked in Slough once.

MamaNewtNewt · 30/03/2021 18:07

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is the funniest thing I've ever seen.

MinnieMous3 · 30/03/2021 18:33

I like Gavin and Stacey until it dawned on me how abusive Stacey is.

  1. She lies to him about being engaged 5 times
  2. She financially abuses his parents - gets them to pay for their wedding and honeymoon (wedding held in her hometown of course!), and then moves in with them afterwards and doesnโ€™t bother looking for a job properly. Never cooks a meal or cleans, leaves it all to Pam.
  3. She makes zero effort to integrate into Essex life and whinges constantly, and is rude to Pam about the house not being her home when Pam tries to reassure her it is
  4. She then goes moody on him, dumps him and moves back to Barry
  5. He then transfers his job to Cardiff and moves there to win her back
  6. She stops taking the pill behind his back for over a year to try to get pregnant

๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ Sheโ€™s a right cow when you look at the facts.

Stacey is really awful at times, but growing up in Wales I knew so many like her. There was and is a mindset amongst many that moving away from your hometown is unimaginable, and in some areas young Welsh girls pretty much do except to give up work after marriage (and have babies almost straight away). It's not so common now, but even 15 years ago when I was at uni, the 'expectations' of many were that I would come home eventually, find a nice local lad and do the proper thing of looking after his kids whilst he spent all evening at the pub 'relaxing. I was already berated for going to a university so very far away (2.5 hours) when there was 1. One just down the road and 2. Why did I need to go anyway? I already had a job! (12 hours a week in a shop). G and S get the Welsh characters so right in my mind - we all had an Uncle Bryn Grin.

Also, Gavin is so wet, it's sometimes hard to feel sorry for him.

littlepattilou · 30/03/2021 18:48

I like The Office, and think it's clever and funny.

But YABU to say it's the funniest programme ever.

littlepattilou · 30/03/2021 18:49

That's the UK OFFICE, not the USA one. That was shit.

the80sweregreat · 30/03/2021 19:29

Stacey is awful. She just whines and moans and just how much did she spend on pregnancy kits once she did become pregnant? Loads!
She makes zero effort for Gavin's family and is a bully. At least Nessa doesn't try and be nice or change for anyone! What you see is what you get with Nessa.

MinnieMous3 · 30/03/2021 19:31

I bloody love Nessa, thereโ€™s kind of a soft vulnerable side to her as well. But yes Stacey is an utter nightmare, shrill and high maintenance.

It was a bit odd in that the โ€˜adultsโ€™ were the 50/60 something parents of the 30 odd year old โ€˜kidsโ€™ - the amount the adults pandered to their grown up children was nuts.

Pam pampered Gavin way too much!
' her little prince'.
I didn't watch them all to be fair, but the ones I did see used to wind me up.
I lived in wales for a while and I must admit none of them were like any of these people.
The Essex ones were very familiar ,
however!

blubberball · 30/03/2021 20:24

I find the Office depressing to watch now. I used to like it at the time.

I can listen to the Ricky, Steve and Karl podcasts and radio shows over and over though.

Although I do get a little sad that they don't work together at all any more.

The only reason I could think people think uk office is better is because of nationalism. Its objectively worse. Lower rated on every rating site. Was not popular enough to get renewed, us one is one of the most successful sitcoms of all time, uk one is just basically known for spawning the franchise that created the us version of the office.

Gosh I forgot we take our opinions from how many stars programmes got on Netflix! Pull the thread, Sheld had just alerted me to the fact I only find it funny because Iโ€™m a nationalist. Thanks mate ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป off to erect my flagpole ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง

What an odd and juvenile comment. Never mind totally wrong - Ricky Gervais never makes more than 2/3 series of any show he's involved with. If I remember correctly, he alluded to the best British TV shows only having a couple of short seasons, like Fawlty Towers. Britain doesn't do TV shows like America in general, 24 episodes over 10 odd seasons until they're completely out of ideas or just repeating old tropes and start stealing plot lines from Friends .

Thanks mate๐Ÿป off to erect my flagpole

Please don't, there's enough flag wankery going on at the moment....

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 30/03/2021 20:43

After Life is very funny. The Office was good, BUT, my top 4 are;

Father Ted
The Royle Family
Early Doors
Benidorm

I hate it. Iโ€™ve worked with too many people like that to find it funny, itโ€™s too cringy for me to be able to enjoy. I can just about stomach the American version as itโ€™s a step removed.

Funniest comedy is Father Ted by a country mile.

ShowOfHands · 30/03/2021 20:54

I wasn't a huge fan. In fact, I found it a bit poorly done in places. I prefer dinnerladies, Black Books, Ghosts.

Fleabag too. Like a previous poster, I can't get along with somebody who doesn't appreciate the brilliance of Fleabag.

dinnerladies wins though. It's sublime.

How has nobody mentioned Spaced yet?

lovelyupnorth · 30/03/2021 21:36

The office is about as funny as an STD.

cardibach · 30/03/2021 21:37

Itโ€™s very personal. And Iโ€™ve never seen it. Ricky Gervais is an unfunny arse though, so thereโ€™s that. Which is the reason Iโ€™ve never seen it. I suspect Iโ€™d find many, many ,many things funnier to be honest. Iโ€™ve seen clips. Shit slapstick. Slapstick is shit anyway and he doesnโ€™t do it well. Or else nasty, nasty bullying jokes. Heโ€™s a twat.

Hastybird · 30/03/2021 21:54

It's genius, but as observation comedy you have to be able to stand the cringe of Brent, if not it's unbearable!

There are tonnes of other fab genius comedies thankfully - anything by Arnando Innucini (prob spelt badly wrong!) - The Thick of It (UK politics) and Veep (US).

Parks and Recreation is just brilliant. Laughed and cried to After Life. Liked Motherland well enough but not sure it will age brilliantly. Fleabag was just perfect, Olivia Coleman nailed the stepmum role.

Fresh Prince of Bel-Air - watched a couple of episodes and from what I saw it's aged pretty well and was still hilarious. Carlton's dance is still funny, and Will Smith is so good!

lioncitygirl · 30/03/2021 21:56

The office wasnโ€™t funny. ๐Ÿ˜ณ
