Double standards on mn.

thatwasme22 · 29/03/2021 14:55

This week so far:

  1. I have seen various posters defend Caroline Flack for having issues. Maybe she did but then the same argument would not be made on Chris Browne.
  1. A thread on the physical attractiveness on male politicians. Imagine a male forum did this on females.
  1. A thread with a woman hiding her inheritance from her husband and encouraged to do so by many posters and him being called financially abusive for being sensible over money. When men do this on mn it's all ltb.

Am I missing something? I call myself a feminist so am pro equality and that's how I raised my kids but why is this not being called out on mn?

Naunet · 30/03/2021 12:36

maybe if a thread like that about women was put up on a male dominated site and it was linked to mn, mn would go ballistic

Any proof of this, or do you believe your predictions to be fact?

By the way, what do you think of the Ched Evans case and how the female VICTIM was treated by the internet? Ever seen a male victim treated like that?

Pumperthepumper · 30/03/2021 12:37

Punt. It’s a site where men rate prostitutes, a few comments went viral a few years ago.

thatwasme22 · 30/03/2021 12:37

''P*ntnet is a male dominated site, have a look at what they say about women over there. That will honestly blow your mind.''

and again what happens on other sites is NOT relevant to the double standards on mn.

What? You’re the one who brought up male dominated sites.

''Where’s the double standard on this thread? What am I looking for?''

Here.
NiceGerbil · 30/03/2021 12:38

I've seen quotes from other places a lot. EG p*nternet the example I gave just now. I don't go ballistic I just feel sad really.

We know what most men think of us. Do you think we're stupid? I've had men shout at me on the street what they think of my looks, body, demeanor, clothes etc. It's just a part of life for lots of women.

That doesn't really matter to you though is it with your idea that if a man on the net says so and so is hot women everywhere go 'ballistic'.

thatwasme22 · 30/03/2021 12:38

''Any proof of this, or do you believe your predictions to be fact?''

maybe read every third thread on mn and there is a rant over how vile males are for leering at women, commenting on their looks etc.

Where’s the double standard though? And why does it exist?

This is getting boring, can you back up what you’re pushing as fact?

thatwasme22 · 30/03/2021 12:40

''What? You’re the one who brought up male dominated sites.''

And i brought it up because other sites and media amongst everyday men are constantly being called out on mn for sexism. Yet when sexism is carried out on mn there is no call out. But I suppose you are going to challenge this?

OP posts:
NiceGerbil · 30/03/2021 12:40

OP
Women are awful if men did to them what they do to men they'd be livid

Poster
Like these men here are but they are 100000 times worse

OP
No don't look over there!

Naunet · 30/03/2021 12:41

Exactly this. Other things you don’t find on male sites:
Men policing other men’s language to make sure they aren’t being sexist
Men saying Not All Women

I can’t believe I’m being asked to give a shit about incredibly minor “double standards” against men on this site, that impact no one, rather than the masses of damaging double standards against women that happen in real life 🙄 Get some perspective OP.

Naunet · 30/03/2021 12:42

Ahh, so you want to compare real life street harassment to fairly tame comments about men on here?! Yeah ok....

That’s not true though. Mumsnet posters hate sexism and it’s called out all the time. It’s one of the few places women are allowed to discuss sexism and it’s overarching effects on society. If mumsnet does have a hive mind, I’d say it’s main concern is addressing sexism and misogyny.
NiceGerbil · 30/03/2021 12:42

You're drawing equivalence between stuff like p*net and the things said on here?

That's 3 examples now of your own massive double standards.

thatwasme22 · 30/03/2021 12:44

''I don't call myself a feminist as I don't agree with the double standards
I concentrate on being a nice person and treating everyone nicely and bring my children up to be the same and to judge people as you find them , rather than group together.''

This. I truly hope some of the posters here never have sons/nephews or marry a man.

@JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows

1. Did you see what Chris Brown did to Rihanna? I won't post a picture because it's very triggering. He also used this incident as material for songs and is far more famous than Caroline Flack ever was.
  1. Lol you think there's no threads ever anywhere objectifying women? It doesn't happen here because the vast majority of posters are women - pop on Reddit if you want to see misogyny in action.
  1. Women are disproportionately disadvantaged should a marriage break up. Due to being paid less, more likely to be part time and also highly likely to leave a marriage being the RP and no guarantee of child support due to the shitty CMS. It's not double standards, it's different because it's highly unlikely men need getaway money to ride them over

I'm a feminist, and it isn't about 'equality', it's about fighting to remove the oppression and hardships women face. Nowt to do with men. They can fight their own battles (heaven k own they don't fight ours)

RE number 1; really? If you had said there was no proof of what Caroline Flack did, then fine. But don’t make out that one example of DV (OF she committed DV) is worse than another because of levels of fame? If she hit him, she hit him.

What a way to minimise!

yea sexism that involves women, doesn't matter if its men.

What’s the effect sexism against men has on society as a whole? What are the societal consequences of sexism against men?
Naunet · 30/03/2021 12:47

I don't call myself a feminist as I don't agree with the double standards

But apparently it’s ok to claim all feminists hold double standards 😂

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 30/03/2021 12:49

You shouldn't drag a specific thread into your own thread. It's not nice.

The MNer was being financially abused in that relationship. She couldn't even buy her kids some fruit without a row.

People here are generally supported, the advice on that thread was very varied as it is on most threads.

You're just stirring the pot. Why?

You concentrate on being a nice person?

It's not all that evident.

Eleganz · 30/03/2021 12:52

I would humbly suggest that comparing MN to a site that is set up for men to rate prostitutes and saying that it means MN is okay is really a poor argument. Perhaps pick some more comparable websites?

There are a number of posters on MN who have a clear doubles standard when it comes to men and women's behaviour. Recent evidence of this was one of the threads OP mentions where plenty of posters were encouraging the thread starter to hide money from her husband and lie about it. However, there were also plenty of posters who said that would be wrong and pointed out that if a man was doing this to a woman it would be viewed very badly on MN. So, OP has a point about certain posters, but not everyone and at least these viewpoints do get challenged regularly on here.

Chanjer · 30/03/2021 12:54

There were also loads of people on that thread that changed their mind after reading updates
