Double standards on mn.

thatwasme22 · 29/03/2021 14:55

This week so far:

  1. I have seen various posters defend Caroline Flack for having issues. Maybe she did but then the same argument would not be made on Chris Browne.
  1. A thread on the physical attractiveness on male politicians. Imagine a male forum did this on females.
  1. A thread with a woman hiding her inheritance from her husband and encouraged to do so by many posters and him being called financially abusive for being sensible over money. When men do this on mn it's all ltb.

Am I missing something? I call myself a feminist so am pro equality and that's how I raised my kids but why is this not being called out on mn?

''Is it all the same people then?

I don't often see the people involved in discussions on feminism posting in the fittest Tory threads

Loads of people post here, lots come here for the lols and lots come here for interesting debate. I don't think there's a great big crossover''

As other posters have said though you are missing the point, it is not individual posters. It's more that the prevailing tone remains the same on the site.

It’s kind of hard to take this seriously when people can’t give any examples of this ‘double standard’ and have to resort to ‘there’s a general tone, a sort of feeling, that there’s hypocrisy going on here’. Especially when you don’t know the sex of the posters. There’s not much of a discussion that can be had.

''The Caroline flack thread wasn’t a discussion about male- and female perpetrators of abuse though. It was how quick we are to forgive men who have abused, Chris Brown being an absolute textbook example of that. Caroline Flack got a hard time because she was a woman, she wasn’t let off.''

eh Chris Browne was not forgiven, it still sticks rigidly to his reputation and many were put off by him. Had he killed himself soon after the incident there would have being no support-the support/sympathy CF got. And no CF did not '' get a hard time because she was a woman'', my point was that she didn't get the same nailing Browne got although she got some criticism. But at her death she was seen as a saint type figure with the whole BEKIND which if was to be put if CB killed himself there would be outrage.

Chanjer · 30/03/2021 12:15

I understand clearly what bill was saying and as I said you need a lot more data like who looked at posts and didn't interact, who interacted and whatever and I don't believe anyone is enough of a dag to have done that

I personally see this site as pretty balanced and if people participate in a genuine way their views are often countered in a respectful fashion

TheMarzipanDildo · 30/03/2021 12:17

I’m not going to defend the Caroline Flack one (I don’t know what to think), but on other forums men talk about fit women all the time (and I have done on here). It doesn’t particularly bother me so long as it’s not creepy levels.

Chris Brown has had an incredibly lucrative career despite being a serial abuser. Again, you can’t say things would be different if he killer himself, 1) because it’s extremely crass and 2) because you can’t see alternate universes and state it as fact.

She absolutely got a worse time because she was a woman. People love to pretend that women are just as bad as men and here’s our example - conveniently forgetting all the men who’ve been proven to be abusers and forgiven. Another poster put a handy list on this very thread for you. She absolutely was not seen as a saint. She was seen as an incredibly damaged, troubled person who was violent to her partners. Absolutely nobody excuses her of being abusive.

Ok yesterday I posted links to sexist threads and MN removed them as apparently it is not allowed. And sorry but I do feel you are nitpicking and being difficult as you insist on rejecting my point. The sex of the posters too is not really relevant, it is more that the double standards are there. So for example the thread on the male politicians being objectified is n eg of double standards on mn and 1 posters here would go mad over if it was reverse but it's openly done about mwen and fill of sexist shit and nobody says a thing.

Likewiose a thread came up last week over a 13 yo boy telling a school girl to ''close you legs your fanny stinks'' and it was deemed appropriate by many posters that the school girl's friend slapped him for saying it. Yes he was a shit for saying it but female on male violence being promoted there by too many posters when in reverse there would be outrage. Likewise people were saying it was misogyny etc for referring to her anatomy but yet many posts here have joked about castrating men or kicking him in the balls etc and there is never backlash.

Assuming any of this is true, which is hard without any links: why? Why is there a ‘double standard’?

Also where did you post the links? It wasn’t on this thread, none of your posts have been removed.

''on other forums men talk about fit women all the time (and I have done on here). It doesn’t particularly bother me so long as it’s not creepy levels.''

but you are missing the point, what is done on other forums is exactly what is criticised on mn and then it is done openly on mn and nobody bats an eyelid. That is a double standard. Just because it doesn't bother you doesn't negate the point when it appears to bother countless womenn on this site if men do it.

Where’s the double standard on this thread? What am I looking for?

Naunet · 30/03/2021 12:29

Such bullshit. The amount of celebrity men who have committed terrible crimes and still not only have fans, but a good career. Look at Mike Tyson getting a role in the Hangover. Absolute bollocks to suggest that men can never come back from their crimes. And by the way, you can’t claim your projections of what would have happened to CB if he’d killed himself, as fact. It’s completely disingenuous.

DogsAreShit · 30/03/2021 12:31

Equality doesn't mean treating everyone the same. If it did, there would be no wheelchairs.

A better comparison to CF is Jeremy Clarkson. Lost his job for assaulting someone over a steak. Got a new job. End of story.

''Where’s the double standard on this thread? What am I looking for?''

maybe if a thread like that about women was put up on a male dominated site and it was linked to mn, mn would go ballistic.

OP posts:
NiceGerbil · 30/03/2021 12:34

OP I've never seen the sort of talk you get on p*nternet on here.

We know how men talk about us. Of course we do.

Drawing equivalence between

Caroline F and Chris B

And

A do you fancy X politician type thread versus what men write and say about women

Just really shows up what you think. Because these things aren't equivalent. The fact you think they are shows up your own double standards.

Chanjer · 30/03/2021 12:35

What is p*internet?

Again, you can’t know that - total projection on your part. And how could it be ‘linked to mumsnet’, I’m not even sure what that means?

P*ntnet is a male dominated site, have a look at what they say about women over there. That will honestly blow your mind.
