I would have said it's a bit excessive, but not all-day-hangover excessive.

Aibu to think this???

@jellybellybanana

I get very sick with most wine now - French or organic is pretty much the only 'safe' wine.

That's psychosomatic. There is no reason at all why French wine would be any different to Italian wine or Spanish wine, as a grouping.

Well I'm not sure about that, regarding French vs Italian vs Spanish, but I for sure get a hammering heart and dreadful headache with New World wines. I don't think it's sulphites, I think it's something to do with production methods and/ or grape varieties. I stick to French or Italian too.

The pounding heart that wakes me at 2am after 2 small glasses of Californian isn't psychosomatic. Wish it was. :(

I feel ill after one glass of red. Hungover after two and I doubt I'd be able to finish much more that that without being very ill. It's the sulphate I think? Also, anything oaked makes me vomit, such as chardonnay.

Absolutely fine with most whites and spirits.

Googleboxfan · 28/03/2021 18:57

I've been the same with less wine than that. I used to be able to drink 1 bottle to myself and not vomit day after.
Think it will depend on how hydrated or dehydrated you may be. How much caffeine you have had etc

unambiguousbeard · 28/03/2021 19:04

Welcome to perimenopause. Or that was my experience although I've always had a tendency to horrendous hangovers. From about 40 though anything more than 1 glass and I could easily spend the entire next day puking. Hopefully for your steak OP it was the steak

unambiguousbeard · 28/03/2021 19:04

*sake. Clearly in full menopause now

Yeah, I wish it was psychosomatic but it's been a process of elimination over several years. The French and organic wines I drink are all specific brands, I'm not ok with the majority.

To be honest it's really not worth the effort any more. I might as well just accept wine makes me ill and be done with it.

Saying a specfic french wine is not at all the same as saying French wine, which means any frecnh wine.

GojiberryStar · 28/03/2021 19:50

I reckon it was the no carbs and one of those days when it just hits hard.
Steak was mostly likely fine.

Are you premenstrual? That always makes me more likely to suffer from alcohol

BaggoMcoys · 28/03/2021 19:53

Wine makes very sick, both red and white. I get sick after just half a glass sometimes. I assume it's sulfites or maybe down to different production methods like pp have mentioned, but have not tried hard to narrow it down. I tend to stick to vodka when I do drink, I can handle that much better.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 28/03/2021 19:55

@havelockvetinari
Thank you that's very useful, one wonders why you don't see that in the Berlitz phrase books.
It would be far more useful than things like "Have you got a room with an international socket as I have brought my own hot plate"

enjoyingscience · 28/03/2021 20:01

That much white wine would have me sick, it’s poison. Weirdly, I can manage some fizz (champagne, cremant, cava and English all fine, Prosecco is the devil).

Red is fine though - though more than half a bottle and I’ll have a headache.

Royalbloo · 28/03/2021 20:02

Depends - if i necked it in a pint glass I'd definitely be sick. Red wine does that to me x

MissSmiley · 28/03/2021 22:29

@littleloopylou

(so wondering if the yellow sticker steak was off?)

I also had zero carbs with it. I'm trying to puzzle out whether it's objectively a lot to drink or there was something else going on.

It's the low carb thing, if you've been doing low carb and you're in ketosis a very small amount of alcohol can make you feel very ill
FlyingPandas · 28/03/2021 22:54

Would agree about the low/no carbs thing. Zero carbs plus any kind of alcohol would make me very sick.

Generally I don’t drink anything other than white wine as most alcohol either makes me sick and/or gives me a socking headache - I can drink a fair few glasses of a nice chilled white or rose and feel pretty much ok the next day, but drinking one single measure of spirits would have me vomiting. But I would never drink either white or rose if I’d had no carbs, it would be disastrous!

I think if you’re doing low or no carbs as a diet it probably makes sense to avoid alcohol completely.

littleloopylou · 28/03/2021 23:00

It was just a coincidence that I ate very few carbs that day. I'm not on a keto diet or anything.

BoJoHoNo · 28/03/2021 23:03

Agree the lack of carbs is the most likely culprit. My 6' 5" tall DP did keto for a while and was falling around pissed after drinking one small glass of mead. Grin

longtompot · 28/03/2021 23:19

I find red wine, sadly, makes my stomach very upset now. I'm very sad as I Iove red wine. Gin doesn't do this to me. I've had rose this evening so we shall see if the same happens tomorrow.

evilharpy · 28/03/2021 23:30

As I've got older (I'm 40) New World red wines seem to give me a cracking headache, usually on the dot of 2am after I've had a few hours sleep I wake up with the headache. I've always loved a Chilean merlot but it's just not worth it any more. And it's not a hangover headache, that's a different beast entirely, it's more like the warning headache I get at the start of a migraine but it never develops further.

I'm never sick from alcohol though. I rarely drink these days and am much less tolerant to it than I used to be but I was never sick when I was younger, even on an empty stomach, and I'm never sick now.

millionmilesaway · 28/03/2021 23:33

Id have a bit of a fuzzy head but that's it

imalmostthere · 29/03/2021 00:12

Nah you're poorly! That's nothing! Standard Saturday night is it not?!
