To not like Rachel from Friends anymore? (Light hearted)

Inspired by the Carrie Bradshaw thread from a little while ago. I've recently been watching my Friends dvd boxset and I really don't like Rachel anymore. She's petty, jealous and vindictive especially to Ross. She sabotaged his relationships and seems to go out of her way to get one over on him or humiliate him in some way. Anyone else agree or am I about to get a tsunami of hatred from Rachel fans 🤣🤣

I know a R.L Janice with style and laugh she's draining.
Joey had a kind heart for his friends ❤
My Dsis is Monica very organised and tidy.
I think everyone can relate to some character.

LongHotSummerJustPassedMeBy · 28/03/2021 11:27

Well there are a couple of episodes where it is made clear that Rachel was the mean girl at school. The Brad Pitt one, for example.

felulageller · 28/03/2021 11:29

The couples that should have been:
Rachel and Mark
Ross and Emily
Monica and Richard
Phoebe and David
Chandler and Kathy
Joey and Kate

They were all prefect for each other.

thecatsthecats · 28/03/2021 11:43

Joey = a very good friend but not a great human being otherwise.
Ross = an iffy friend, awful lover (to all his girlfriends), brother and human being.
Chandler = mostly a good friend and boyfriend - understood when he made mistakes and made up for it.

Monica = a great friend - always called them out when they were being crap, defended Rachel against Ross. Good partner too - minor wobble with Richard aside.
Phobe = started out kooky but you got why. Ended up horribly obnoxious.
Rachel = started out naive and spoiled, and yes, messed around a fair bit with Ross, but was mostly good with other boyfriends who didn't mess around with her.

I loved the earlier series with bits like Chandler supporting Rachel with her parents divorce and the guys helping Phoebe try find her dad, or taking the micky out of Monica's job. Those bits felt very real.

@VanillaAndOrange

I'm glad so many people liked Joey. I did, but I thought I was unusual and most people just dismissed him as sexist.
I don't think he's sexist at all. Stupid in a way that's totally unrealistic though.
GreenSlide · 28/03/2021 13:17

Rachel is a really good character I think, she walked out of a wedding she didn't want, went out on her own against her families wishes, made a great career for herself, didn't just stick with Ross when he accused her of all sorts of cheated on her, by the time she had Emma she had become a really strong woman and made some great life choices.

GreenSlide · 28/03/2021 13:21

Although the worst episodes were the ones in Barbados and the whole Ross/Joey/Rachel/Charlie thing.

whiteroseredrose · 28/03/2021 13:37

Wasn't the premise of the whole thing that they were all 'losers'? In the first series anyway?

Quirrelsotherface · 28/03/2021 13:47

Monica and Richard

Agree and who wouldn't have done anything for Tom Selleck in his prime..sigh..

Sammysquiz · 28/03/2021 13:59

Yes, agree with this. Though the one in London with all the cringey cameos comes a close second!

LizBennet · 28/03/2021 14:10

I actually like Rachel. The bit that bugs me most now is Ross Geller, PhD, not knowing that condoms weren’t 100% effective... just no.
Joey is my overall favourite.

rc22 · 28/03/2021 15:19

The one in London annoyed me because I knew that, in this country, a church they were part way through demolishing, probably wouldn't still be licensed for weddings. Also, I think they had a rehearsal dinner...not a thing in this country. I accept that I am impossibly pedantic!!

You are so right - I was so disappointed that David scientist guy lost out to Mike. I thought maybe Rachel would have been good with her mat leave person (the Dermot Mulroney character).
Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 28/03/2021 15:26

What's the problem with Pheobe?

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 28/03/2021 15:28

I hated Ross, even as a child watching it. His behaviour made me really uncomfortable.

Claymorekick · 28/03/2021 15:40

God yes...he was sexy as hell, even in Friends! And the chemistry between and Monica was incredible...she was a lucky lady Grin although, even though I am not normally a 'moustache' loving lady, he did not look half as hot in the episodes where he had shaved it off Confused

I really wish she had ended up with Richard instead of Chandler.

Claymorekick · 28/03/2021 15:41

One of my favourite movie scenes (for obvious reasons) is in Three Men and a Baby where Tom Selleck is jogging on the streets in very tight shorts 🔥

Kindred spirits!

British people would be like wtf are all these toasts about and why have I been dragged into this on a Friday?

Also, the Gellers and Emily's family are arguing about the cost of hosting in their refurbished home, but it's clearly a hotel.

Cheeeeislifenow · 28/03/2021 16:29

To add to another reason I hate Ross. The way he treated Mona, he also broke into her apartment.

TheGoogleMum · 28/03/2021 16:45

I'm still fond of friends. A lot of people say they hate Ross but I agree he's one of the funniest ones with some of the most memorable moments (he was jealous and possessive with Rachel but let's face it none of them are perfect and his ex wife leaving him for a woman won't have helped!). I agree Phoebe has a real mean streak and is particularly mean to Ross.

Josette77 · 28/03/2021 17:31

I loved Phoebe. She is a survivor. She was neglected, abused, had no parents, found out she didn't even know her own age, or her middle name. She taught herself french on the streets. She was tough because she had to be and fearless. I respected her more than anyone.

Yes and she hadn't really been taught how to behave in some situations, they made that more clear in the first couple of series and it helped with understanding why she would come out with inappropriate things at times.

WickedWitchOfTheEast87 · 28/03/2021 19:35

I get that Phoebe and Ross clashed a lot but they did have a good friendship and they did support each other. Remember when Ross moved into ugly naked guy's apartment and one of the neighbours stopped by and asked him for money for the caretaker of the building who was retiring and Ross had lived there for 25 minutes! The neighbour was pissed off at being told no and trashed Ross to the whole building and nicknamed him freebie and Phoebe defended Ross and told them once she got to know him that he was lovely and very generous. That neighbour was a cheeky fucker to ask Ross for a cheque when he didn't even know the guy ffs I wouldn't hand over a cheque for someone I had never met never mind literally moving in half an hour ago!

I watched an episode recently, having not watched it for a very long time.
Sad to say that I dont think that it has dated well. Much like many popular sitcoms.
They reflect the thinking of the day. I think the clue is in ' situational.'

WickedWitchOfTheEast87 · 28/03/2021 19:40

Another funny momment for Phoebe is when she's playing that computer game and tries to beat Chandler's scores to get rid of his rude nicknames so Ben won't see it and she loses the game and then loses her shit completely and starts swearing just as Ross walks in with Ben and covers his ears in horror 🤣🤣
