To not like Rachel from Friends anymore? (Light hearted)

WickedWitchOfTheEast87 · 27/03/2021 20:21

Inspired by the Carrie Bradshaw thread from a little while ago. I've recently been watching my Friends dvd boxset and I really don't like Rachel anymore. She's petty, jealous and vindictive especially to Ross. She sabotaged his relationships and seems to go out of her way to get one over on him or humiliate him in some way. Anyone else agree or am I about to get a tsunami of hatred from Rachel fans 🤣🤣

That’s because it was made in a time where no one got offended by anything. It’s in line with its era. Side note... Chandler us and will always be the best on that show 😊

Ontheboardwalk · 27/03/2021 22:23

Monica annoyed me but Phoebe was no friend of hers. Seemed to be out to get her

Didn’t she tell Richard all the guys Monica has been with - and thats a lot, I like you the best. She also slept with one of her boyfriends an hour after they broke up - they could have been on a break!

And don’t get me started on stealing someone’s cat

Quirrelsotherface · 27/03/2021 22:24

But the thing with Phoebe, she was meant to be a bit 'dippy' or in literal terms someone who never thinks before she speaks and puts her foot in it sometimes. Also a very sweet and simple way of looking at the world..'he's her lobster'

Troublewaters2021 · 27/03/2021 22:30

I can’t stand Ross and I think
Rachel deserved better - I do agree she has her moments to.

The character / story line that always for me was the Ross / Emily situation.
I have seen uproar how Emily
Was controlling and absolutely wrong to say that ross can’t see Rachel.
Now I found Emily annoying but I can’t see how many of us would be happy with our DP spending time with a women who he 1. Used to be with and 2. Accidentally said name at alter.

Bloodypunkrockers · 27/03/2021 22:31

@Quirrelsotherface

Can anyone explain the Phoebe hate?

Also why it's so 'of its time' which is quoted on this thread a lot. I get it has dated but then, don't all sitcoms?

Honestly interested in specific examples, it's still one of my favourites. All of the characters are flawed but then so is every human on the planet.

Monica. Who did you REALLY want to hook up with. Poor Chandler
ImWorriedAboutThis · 27/03/2021 22:31
@ImWorriedAboutThis she also makes Monica tell everyone that it was joey she was looking for when she went to their room. And tells chandler that Monica had lunch with Richard.
Yes! She also wanted to keep some poor girl’s missing cat. And, she went to Howard’s party, and then made the situation even worse for Ross.

Bumblebee1980a · 27/03/2021 22:32

I have never liked friends. I don't like the humour, it just isn't funny.

ContractClockAndCrucible · 27/03/2021 22:34

It was funny, I liked it. I don't over analyse things.

Bloodypunkrockers · 27/03/2021 22:34

Oh and the warbling outside Monica's restaurant

I never understood what Mike saw in her

DragonPoop · 27/03/2021 22:37

I hate Ross the most but I do dislike Rachel too. Monica is my favourite!

StanfordPines · 27/03/2021 22:37

I loved it at the time and started rewatching it but I had to give up as I found them all so annoying.

cafenoirbiscuit · 27/03/2021 22:38

I liked Monica with Richard,
They were all mean to Janice though 😞

ChazP · 27/03/2021 22:40

@Sulusu

My advice is don't watch Scrubs again. It hasn't held up well over time. Dr Cox is still an amazing character but JD is just awful! Misogynistic, whiney, fat shaming and just horrible. Friends has aged better IMO despite its problems.
The way he treats Elliot is SO awful! I’m rewatching it’s with my daughter and never picked up just what a narcissist he was first time round.

Ross with the leather pants or Rachel when she tried to entice Josh organised a fake party, and kept changing outfits eventually ending up in her cheerleader outfit saying "this baby never failed" Grin

HedgeSparrows · 27/03/2021 22:46

Carol and Susan were really cruel to Ross.

XelaM · 27/03/2021 22:46

Or when someone ate Ross' sandwich 🥪

GrandTheftWalrus · 27/03/2021 22:48

@hedgesparrows I agree. The way they wanted Susan's surname in Ben's name when she was the ow was horrible.

WickedWitchOfTheEast87 · 27/03/2021 22:51

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz I don't always agree with Ross's behaviour but Rachel was worse than he was. When she was with Paolo he didn't sabotage their relationship he just moaned to Joey and Chandler. Rachel however was a complete bitch to Julie whilst she was with Ross. She accused Julie of stealing Ross and then Monica from her and played the victim. She deliberately confused Phoebe so she would give Julie a bad haircut and she advised Ross to wait to sleep with Julie and when he didn't take that advice she tried to keep everyone at Ross's place for hours to "get to know Julie" to prevent them sleeping together! She was also snide and passive aggressive to Julie.

As for the Mark thing Ross was 100% right and Rachel point blank refused to see it even Joey told her Mark wanted to sleep with her and it was so obvious Mark was trying to stir things up being her friend like when he told her things guys do and she repeated that to Ross and then got annoyed he was so insecure. Mark also stirred it more when Rachel let him into the apartment and he chooses to speak up when Ross calls thats not a friend thats shit stirring and Rachel knew full well how Ross felt about Mark but she let him in regardless.

She convinced Bonnie to shave her hair off to hurt and humiliate Ross and when he ended things for her she tried to make him take the full blame for their relationship when she was just as culpable as Ross.

She flew to London to ruin his wedding to Emily and after he said Rachel at the alter all Rachel could think about was herself and how this means Ross must still love her no thought for Ross or poor Emily who was humiliated. Then she told Ross she still loved him despite him trying to make it work with Emily and even Monica told her not to do it because he's married and Rachel was having none of it all she could think about was herself.

Rachel always acts so high and mighty like she's too good for Ross and she goes out of her way to humiliate him like when they tried to get an annulment and she lied on the forms about Ross. Rachel is actually vindictive jealous and petty which is a shame because Jennifer Aniston is a good actress and she had some funny moments the writers really didn't develop Rachel's character until she had Emma.

I hated the way they took Ross’s character. Him having a nervous breakdown and ending up on medication was meant to be funny and I never understood why. He also just got weirder and nerdier as the show went on, in the earlier seasons he’s kind of a lovable nerd who’s clearly super smart and passionate about his job, but by the end he’s just portrayed as a bit of a weird loser.

The same could be said for all of them though, towards the end of the show they were all just caricatures and very one-note. Phoebe got kookier, Joey got stupider, Monica got more neurotic etc etc etc until that’s all their characters were about.

WisnaeMe · 27/03/2021 22:55

great Thread fascinating observations, we're all seeing very differing personalities.

Joey was my most precious fave character ☺️

Ellpellwood · 27/03/2021 22:59

Also why it's so 'of its time' which is quoted on this thread a lot. I get it has dated but then, don't all sitcoms?

For me it's stuff like the longstanding horror of Chandler's towards his dad who is a drag act (not quite sure if she actually was a trans character?) which makes him quite homophobic in general, Ross insisting the male nanny must be gay, episode after episode about how funny Fat Monica was. And in general how quite insane jealous behaviour (Ross over Rachel's co worker, her turning up to his wedding) was portrayed as romantic.

Cheeeeislifenow · 27/03/2021 22:59

Ross is the biggest jealous dick.
I hate the fat shaming in it. I think friends brought porn into mainstream, almost normalized it. The homophobia, racism sexism. The list is endless

Ellpellwood · 27/03/2021 23:02

Yes, this too!

Him having a nervous breakdown and ending up on medication was meant to be funny and I never understood why.

You can't really picture say Johnny Rose from Schitt's Creek or Phil from Modern Family having a breakdown and being suspended from work being played off as funny.

WickedWitchOfTheEast87 · 27/03/2021 23:10

I agree and Susan was such a cheeky fucker to say to Ross that its her baby too when he asked Carol why she was in the title. At that point they hadn't been together that long so Susan didn't really have any right to have a say on the baby's name she should've shut up, supported Carol and been grateful she was included in any decisions. Fair enough after her and Carol had been together for a few years and they married but not at the point where Ross and Carol had just separated.
