To not like Rachel from Friends anymore? (Light hearted)

Inspired by the Carrie Bradshaw thread from a little while ago. I've recently been watching my Friends dvd boxset and I really don't like Rachel anymore. She's petty, jealous and vindictive especially to Ross. She sabotaged his relationships and seems to go out of her way to get one over on him or humiliate him in some way. Anyone else agree or am I about to get a tsunami of hatred from Rachel fans 🤣🤣

I've binge watched Friends from start to finish so many times now I honestly don't think it's healthy and I STILL notice something new every time!

Rachel and Chandler are my favourites.
Monica and Joey are alright.
I absolutely cannot fucking stand Phoebe and Ross.

I really wish Mike had been in the series longer because I think he had great potential. Emily just fucked me off right from the start. The episode with Brad Pitt is absolutely hilarious, his facial expressions are brilliant.

FurrySlipperBoots · 27/03/2021 23:13

I just saw a post of Facebook marketplace with someone trying to flog her Friends VHS collection for £15!! I don't know what dreamworld she's living in, but her original listing 3 months ago had them priced at £50!!! Nice try!

Anyway, back to the original topic... I love Friends and all the characters! It bothered me that they made Joey act brain damaged towards the end, and it was sad that Ben was never mentioned once Emma came on the scene, like he'd just been replaced, but apart from that I can't really find fault.

Gwenhwyfar · 27/03/2021 23:13

Joey was greedy, not a foodie!

hesnearly3 · 27/03/2021 23:14

I agree with an earlier poster about joey and how lovely he is great friend etc

I wish I could have married chandler so big fan of him lol

Ross was a total wet blanket and I can't see someone like him ever getting a date in real life as he's such a tool. So wet and so annoying

Rachel I like. A bit entitled but she can't help her upbringing

I'm not understanding all the hatred to Phoebe?

Monica was ok but very weird, boring, always wants to get her own way, an annoying know it all etc

Ontheboardwalk · 27/03/2021 23:15

Right am off to watch the one with the rumour. Great episode

Rachel should have stayed on the plane

WickedWitchOfTheEast87 · 27/03/2021 23:18

Does anyone remember Chandler's crazy and weird roomate Eddie after Joey moved out? He gave me the creeps especially after Chandler caught him watching him sleep and he said what about the other nights when he doesn't see Eddie watching him lol

I know he was unpleasant and sarcastic but I have to say I did like Rachel's dad he always made me laugh especially when Rachel told him she was pregnant and he asked who the father was then said "please not her" meaning Phoebe and when Rachel said Ross he looked at Phoebe and as if he'd prefer it to be her after all 🤣🤣🤣

The whole thing with Monica supposedly going to the room to see joey made no sense whatsoever.

In the wedding episode chandler is comforting her and telling her how beautiful she is, that’s why she chooses to sleep with him, not just because he happened to be there. I remembered that at the time, why couldn’t a room full of writers.
The last few series of friends was full of dumb stuff like that and the characters became so broad and unbelievable that I don’t think it’s worth putting those things into what makes them a good character or not (IMO).

Gwenhwyfar · 27/03/2021 23:23

"when Rachel told him she was pregnant and he asked who the father was then said "please not her" meaning Phoebe"

Eh? How could Phoebe be the father of the baby?

Nameysamey · 27/03/2021 23:25

I think it was really funny and not offensive at all, it was good natured she people weren’t offended by every single thing back then, it was a simpler time and people were less uptight and happier! Not like the odd world we’re living in these last few years.

FurrySlipperBoots · 27/03/2021 23:29

I LOVE Eddie!! Brilliant character!! 'We took a roadtrip to Las Vegas man!' - he's the best 'guest' character, apart from Rhonda, who I just love. My favourite quote from the whole show is 'You not in a perfect world - you in a museum now!'

TinaTurnoff · 27/03/2021 23:30

It’s all caricature and I don’t analyse if too much but it still makes me laugh when I pick up a few comfort episodes on Comedy Central.

BusySittingDown · 27/03/2021 23:31

I've only recently realised that my favourite Friend is Chandler.

He's just so sweet - the way he's always there for Joey, pays for everything etc. He calms Monica down and is the rational one when she's out of control. He's the best!

It dawned on me suddenly the other week, despite me being THE biggest Friends fan for the last 25 years and never having a favourite. Ross is an absolute twat (for some reason I still love him though and Friends wouldn't be the same without him). Rachel is still my girl crush.

Also, Ross had all the funniest storylines (leather pants, white teeth, pivot, fake tan etc).

Ontheboardwalk · 27/03/2021 23:32

I loved Eddie and his fish and him watching Chandler sleeping. I also love Joey coming back to move in

WisnaeMe · 27/03/2021 23:35

I LOVED Chandlers ex Janice 🤣😂

Excited101 · 27/03/2021 23:35

It’s a comedic sitcom, it’s funny, it’s never been designed to be taken seriously, which is why it’s a comedy... all this ‘enlightened’ rewatching and interpretation is weird.

BusySittingDown · 27/03/2021 23:37

Another thing - they all still look amazing but they've aged (obviously) but Paul Rudd still looks exactly the frigging same. How? He's in his 50s and, aside from a few grey hairs, still looks like he did in Clueless!!! Paul Rudd, if you're reading this - I would like to know where the Fountain Of Eternal Youth is or which night cream you use. Please and thank you.

Pamelaaaaa · 27/03/2021 23:54

Currently rewatching and it has stuck out to me how often Rachel has to move!
Starts by living with Monica, then they have to switch to the boys apartment, then they move back, then in with phoebe, then to Joey's, then with Ross then back to Joey!

Not to mention the fact when she switched to the boy's apartment after the bet she absolutely hated it and moaned about it until they switched back yet then spent years living in it with Joey.

WickedWitchOfTheEast87 · 27/03/2021 23:55

@Gwenhwyfar Rachel's dad had assumed Phoebe was a lesbian because she told him she was a vegetarian and he said something along the lines of "what is it with you lesbian's" so I'm assuming he probably thought Rachel went the turkey baster route and was with Phoebe now lol

My favourite episode ever has to be the one with the quiz where Monica bets the apartment. Full credit to Ross for coming up with the questions it really shows how well he knew them all. Ross gets a lot of hate but he had his sweet moments he bought Phoebe her dream bike after she told everyone she never had one as a kid and he taught her to ride it. He helped Rachel after Monica knocked into her on her skates and broke her ribs and missed his chance to be on tv. He loaned Monica money after she lost her job and was skint. He bought Joey that horrible ugly dog to make him feel better over his financial troubles and losing his job and apartment.

Who remembers Phoebe's utterly terrifying art Gladys and Glynnis! I was 🤣🤣🤣 when Rachel told him Gladys was haunted and he yelled "GET THAT LEGLESS WITCH OUTTA HERE!!

OP posts:
WickedWitchOfTheEast87 · 28/03/2021 00:01

That was meant to be Rachel told Joey Gladys was haunted

Ross is an amazing friend but a terrible, terrible, awful boyfriend.

Mreggsworth · 28/03/2021 00:08

Non of them were perfect. But isnt that what made it relatable? Everyone is flawed, and I believe the cast of friends were flawed in realistic ways, just obviously dramatized for entertainment purposes.

Obviously they stepped significantly out of line at times, but the show would have been boring otherwise. Ultimately I believe the characters were more likeable than dislikeable.

My favourite characters from a TV show are Willow and Spike from buffy. Doesn't mean I think they are great people, just interesting and dynamic characters, but both are significantly flawed but that's partly what makes them interesting.

ImAncient · 28/03/2021 00:10

They don’t know, that we know, they know. Love that episode.

OppsUpsSide · 28/03/2021 00:14

Yup. I love flawed characters, and it was their flaws that made for most of the humour. Rachel was always spoilt and selfish, everyone has flaws but most people still have friends, you just adjust slightly to the flaws of your friends or find friends whose flaws fit with your own.

ClaireEclair · 28/03/2021 00:16

After Ross and Rachel breakup Ross became my favourite. He was hilarious! Pivot, the leather trousers! “MY SANDWICH?”, when he held a fake wake for himself, Unagi. Hilarious!

Never understood the love for Chandler. Most of the stuff he says just isn’t that funny. Early seasons Monica was really cool and could be funny. After getting together with Chandler she became shrill and over the top neurotic.

Loved Rachel, Phoebe and Joey. When you really watch it you see that Joey was actually the best actual friend to them all. He was loyal, gave great advice (for someone who was supposed to be stupid) and sweet when he wasn’t being a womaniser. Hated the stupid French episode though. The writers for desperate towards the end.

CornishPastyDownUnder · 28/03/2021 00:16

watched the entire series last year with DC..Holy Hell my younger self did not appreciate how totally gorgeous DavidSchwimmer was-comedic a.f and decent bod!! Love the show as a snapshot in time kind of thing-like other shows of a similar time(Seinfeld,King of Queens etc) .
