To not like Rachel from Friends anymore? (Light hearted)

Inspired by the Carrie Bradshaw thread from a little while ago. I've recently been watching my Friends dvd boxset and I really don't like Rachel anymore. She's petty, jealous and vindictive especially to Ross. She sabotaged his relationships and seems to go out of her way to get one over on him or humiliate him in some way. Anyone else agree or am I about to get a tsunami of hatred from Rachel fans 🤣🤣

Grin We do ‘you don’t know, that I know, that you know, I know, that you know’, it’s addictive once you get started, you can go on and on and on!

Sicilianna · 28/03/2021 00:20

Do people only watch TV shows where all the characters are perfect?! How do you cope with life?

It's hilarious and yes they all have their flaws. Like we all do, here in the real world.

Sicilianna · 28/03/2021 00:23

@Nameysamey

I think it was really funny and not offensive at all, it was good natured she people weren’t offended by every single thing back then, it was a simpler time and people were less uptight and happier! Not like the odd world we’re living in these last few years.
Yes! So true.
longdressed · 28/03/2021 00:31

I have a theory that pretty much all tv characters are awful, or would be if they were real people. Even some of my favourites do awful things, but it's all about the comedy or drama or suspense. They would be boring without this.

Notashandyta · 28/03/2021 00:38

I love street pheobe!!!

And Ross.

All of them.

Friends is like a giant comfort blanket.

Osirus · 28/03/2021 00:54

@Comeondelicious

Always felt sorry for Chandler. Would hate to meet Monica IRL .Its amazing that Ross could wipe his own bottom. Love Joey forever. Phoebe is a princess warrior; Rachel just doing best she can with what she's got in hard world, IMHO x #needhairsalon xo
I know a real life Monica. Her relationships are short lived!
Twofurrycatsagain · 28/03/2021 00:55

I still have the urge to shout pivot when anyone is moving furniture.

Osirus · 28/03/2021 00:56

I loved them all, but my favourite was Mike. He had the measure of them all, and stayed (mostly) out of their dramas.

Emeraldshamrock · 28/03/2021 02:02

Ross was a whiny arsehole. Rachel could be shallow at times from her spoilt upbringing but overall she overcame it.

BaggoMcoys · 28/03/2021 02:21

All of them got ridiculously caricatured towards the end (though I think it started going downhill after series 4), but I liked all of the characters despite their flaws, except for Phoebe. I don't think she brought anything positive to the group, she was often selfish and downright nasty at times.
I don't think she was much of a friend to any of them but she was really quite horrible to Monica, Chandler and Ross at various times - I can't recall her ever being particularly mean to Rachel or Joey...though I've remembered when she wouldn't allow Rachel to shop at pottery barn, until she decided she liked it herself, and when she discouraged (or banned) her from getting a massage at a corporate parlour when it turned out she was working there.

I know Friends wasn't made to be analysed in this much detail, but Phoebe really does grind my gears!

TaraR2020 · 28/03/2021 03:07

They all ended up characiatures of their characters in the end...

Phoebe did become less than kind, which was a the biggest shame I thought. Monica overly shrill, Chandler wet...

Some episodes were a bit too ridiculous but it ran for 10 years so its forgivable!

What we would call homophobic now wasn't seen so at the time - there was still such a lot of prejudice around gay relationships, in treating them with humour in the programme they broke tension, recognised that some might be discomfort but ultimately showed that gay relationships were healthy and normal. I think its easy to forget how groundbreaking that was at the time.

Some of the things people take offence at now, its like they forget its a comedy - there're jokes...Like phoebe needling Ross about his belief in evolution: she did so because he scoffed and dismissed any beliefs that didn't agree with it. She pointed out his hypocrisy and called him out on poor behaviour in a humorous way.

At the time, I loved that she ended up with Mike but now when I watch it I wish she'd chosen David!

And I get what one poster said about Rachel's upset in the one where no ones ready, but it was because Ross shouted at her. Now I think it was an overreaction* but if more woman took such a firm line in real life maybe fewer would get stuck in abusive relationships.

*its a sitcom!

As a whole the characters were realistic, you only have to read mn to see how nice ppl can also be horrible at times!

Ps - janice was the best Grin

Planty13 · 28/03/2021 03:47

Rachel was awful but eventually she was the only one that really grew as a person IMO. She was a totally different person by the end and really developed as a character. Ross just stayed petty and toxic and will forever hold Rachel back and I cannot believe she got off the plane.

Joey was the least problematic despite him being a serial womaniser so that’s saying something.

Chandler was gross but was at least obvious about it. Monica could have done better.

ILikeTheWineNotTheLabel · 28/03/2021 04:07

Stuck on an episode the other day and realised how much it was ok back then to have flaws, still be considered lovable/a good friend/fun.

There’s so much pressure on people now to fix their ‘issues’. Some of that is good, but not all of it. We pathologies so much of human experience.

Tinkerbell456 · 28/03/2021 05:23

I have to say I liked Chandler the most. They were all a bit precious and narcissistic though, as I remember.

motherrunner · 28/03/2021 07:23

I was 16 when series one of ‘Friends’ came out and I still love it now as much as I did them despite its obvious ageing.

I did think Joey and Ross had the best lines. Anyone remember the ‘holiday armadillo?’ and the retelling of the Christmas story? ‘My favourite part was when Superman flew all the Jews out of Egypt’.

I also weep at ‘Ken Adams’ but that’s because my DH likes to sign up to websites to get freebies etc but gives the same fake name and over time we’ve created a life for him 😆

Beefcurtains79 · 28/03/2021 08:01

IIRC Didn’t Chandler walk in on his father having sex with the pool boy behind his mothers back when he was a child? Then his father left him and his mother to become a drag queen in Vegas?
I mean, Im not sure his subsequent uneasy relationship with his father can be totally attributed to Chandler being homophobic.

Raffles1981 · 28/03/2021 08:02

I watch friends all the time and I'm 40 this year. I agree, there are things that make me cringe now, but it's a comfort blanket for me (and many others it seems) I think it did lose something towards the end. I love series 8 when Rachel is pregnant. For me, that is some of the best episodes.
"Ross, can you just forget about the condoms"
"Well, I may as well have!!"
Comedy gold

rc22 · 28/03/2021 08:26

I felt sorry for Phoebe in the episode where she said that she pretended that the box her neighbour's bike came in was her bike when she was little. Then when Ross buys her a bike, she loves it but walks it around but she doesn't want to admit she can't ride it. That episode made me very fond of both Phoebe and Ross regardless of what they do in the rest of the episodes.

ImAncient · 28/03/2021 08:30

And Joey’s panic on realising condoms are not always effective!!

I’m not keen on Ross but he’s a good person when he walks his ex wife down the aisle to marry the OW. Not many that would do that.

RedRec · 28/03/2021 08:52

I really, really do not understand the hatred for Phoebe on here. Am mystified (a bit like Rachel looking for the baby on her baby scan).

littleburn · 28/03/2021 09:34

I've always viewed it as a comedy. I never really got that invested in liking or disliking the characters and whether I approved of their actions, found their character arc believable etc, just whether it made me laugh or not! Maybe it's just me ...

I agree though it hasn't aged well, as it doesn't by make me laugh like it did.

FirewomanSam · 28/03/2021 10:10

Yes I find that this is the case for most sitcoms, a lot of the humour comes from people who are supposedly good friends being horrible to each other! I always thought Big Bang Theory was particularly bad for that.

grieving321 · 28/03/2021 10:27

I think that it is just that we have all got older so you recognise the flawed characters more easily. My early teen daughter and her friends universally love friends whilst simultaneously being a characture for woke.

frugalkitty · 28/03/2021 10:55

Janice is my favourite character! I wish she'd got together with Chandler, and I also wish Phoebe had got together with David.

I agree with posters who have said that we find them more annoying now because we've grown up ourselves.

VanillaAndOrange · 28/03/2021 11:11

I'm glad so many people liked Joey. I did, but I thought I was unusual and most people just dismissed him as sexist.
