To not like Rachel from Friends anymore? (Light hearted)

Inspired by the Carrie Bradshaw thread from a little while ago. I've recently been watching my Friends dvd boxset and I really don't like Rachel anymore. She's petty, jealous and vindictive especially to Ross. She sabotaged his relationships and seems to go out of her way to get one over on him or humiliate him in some way. Anyone else agree or am I about to get a tsunami of hatred from Rachel fans 🤣🤣

I remember getting really wound up when Monica insisted Chandler spend all his savings on their wedding lol.

Staffy1 · 27/03/2021 20:50

Rachel annoyed me, but not because of her character. Her hair annoyed me, just hanging down so far over her face that only a narrow middle bit of face was visible. I really wanted to tie it back or tuck it behind her ears.

suggestionsplease1 · 27/03/2021 20:55

They're all caricatures aren't they? I can't take it too seriously, they're portrayals of our own exaggerated flaws /base instincts run wild so that we laugh at them while feeling safely smug.

I think its quite interesting this reviewing of older shows that's happening quite a lot recently...I think in a way as a society we are becoming more conservative.

FrankButchersDickieBow · 27/03/2021 20:56

I thought Rachel was the best at comedy out of them all, but my favourite episode was Ross with the leather pants. Still makes me laugh out loud when he tries to pull them up and slaps himself in the face and joey tells him to make some paste pants 🤣

WickedWitchOfTheEast87 · 27/03/2021 20:57

@XelaM Ross was funny David Schwimmer has great comedy timing. My favourite Ross moments was when he pranked Rachel by throwing a dummy down the stairs and her reaction was real David Schwimmer who directed the episode didn't tell Jennifer Aniston so he could get a real reaction 🤣🤣 and my other favourite moment was when he was proved right that Rachel made the first move on him the night Emma was conceived it was about time Rachel got knocked down a peg or two she was arrogant bitch in that episode acting all high mighty and asking the others if they think she'd beg Ross! She deserved that humiliation for all the times she did the same to Ross!

I loved Monica and Chandler together I thought they made a great couple.

I love Phoebe she never fails to make me laugh.

Joey is the best of the bunch he worked out Monica and Chandler before the others and covered for them it was lovely that they let him marry them. He introduced Phoebe to Mike and married them. He was the reason Emma was conceived and he was loyal and always helped where he could and he's a foodie! Joey always makes me laugh. I was 🤣🤣 at him teaching Ross to talk dirty in series one

Always felt sorry for Chandler. Would hate to meet Monica IRL .Its amazing that Ross could wipe his own bottom. Love Joey forever. Phoebe is a princess warrior; Rachel just doing best she can with what she's got in hard world, IMHO x #needhairsalon xo

WickedWitchOfTheEast87 · 27/03/2021 21:04

@CrazyBaubles I can't stand Carla anymore she's such a gossiping busybody! I loved Laverne though she was funny I was gutted they killed her off. Ted was brilliant as well. One of my favourite moments was when Dr Cox punched Kelso for bullying Elliot and Ted's reaction is crying with laughter whilst Laverne is on the phone telling everyone what happened 🤣🤣 and everyone else is standing there open mouthed with shock

Carla annoyed me by taking over everything when her and turk got together. Like giving him a bedtime when his friends were in. I'd have got divorced if tried that! Chucking JD out was another one, even though he lived there first. Carla had a house with her mum, why couldn't her and turk move there?

HeyDemonsItsYaGirl · 27/03/2021 21:10

Rachel and Chandler had great character arcs and both really grew from the beginning of the series to the end.

On the other hand Joey turned from someone lovable but not exactly academic into someone who, frankly, would need a carer to get through day-to-day life. Phoebe turned from quirky to nasty. Monica became more one-dimensional until her only defining charactertistic was neuroticism.

David Schwimmer has such great comic timing that I can't help but love Ross, too, even though he barely changed in 10 years. All the best episodes are Ross-focused.

Famousinlove · 27/03/2021 21:13

@XelaM

Ross was my favourite - he always had the funniest things happen to him.

Chandler was my favourite until he got together with Monica - I didn't like them together.

Rachel was hilarious until she got pregnant and then it all became less funny.

Phoebe was a bitch but a funny one and Lisa Kudrow aged BY FAR the best out of all of them.

Joey was very funny, but I didn't find him that hot towards the end of the show.

Monica I didn't like at all! Especially as I had a friend very similar to her in character

Agree with all of these, love Ross, so underrated

I’ve gradually fallen out of love with Friends and aside from the obvious change in attitudes, I think part of it is due to my age. I was mid teens to mid twenties when Friends was originally shown and I no longer identify with the main characters or the majority of the issues they face. As a show it was very much of its time.

Certain parts still make me smile though and we reference various phases frequently as a family but to save any of the love I had for it I’ve stopped actively rewatching.

OohThatCat · 27/03/2021 21:37

I love Friends but I do acknowledge that my favourite character Ross is also an absolute dick. Phoebe has a complete personality change towards the end and is also terrible. Rachel was always kind of inoffensive to me.

Am rewatching Big Bang Theory at the moment and Bernadette is literally the worst character ever invented!

Nameysamey · 27/03/2021 21:38

Chandler’s the best! So funny, Rachel too, then Joey..Ross far too wet, Monica annoying, Phoebe ok

greeneyedlulu · 27/03/2021 21:40

I still love friends, its on in the background sometimes and I still laugh out loud at some of it. I loved Chandler, he was by far, my favourite!

Yes that was funny.

I liked them all but I found Monica the most annoying. She was so squeaky and bossy.

howmanyhats · 27/03/2021 21:44

They're all vacuous arseholes and always were. I never got why it was so popular tnh.

KingsRoad · 27/03/2021 21:47

Am rewatching Big Bang Theory at the moment and Bernadette is literally the worst character ever invented! Completely agree. She's horrible. As is Howard. And Penny is an alcoholic.

WisnaeMe · 27/03/2021 21:47

@orpah

i still like her. I DESPISE Phoebe though, she’s a fucking bitch

This 🌸

Veterinari · 27/03/2021 21:55

@Sulusu

My advice is don't watch Scrubs again. It hasn't held up well over time. Dr Cox is still an amazing character but JD is just awful! Misogynistic, whiney, fat shaming and just horrible. Friends has aged better IMO despite its problems.
That's my memory of JD the first time around! I could never understand what Elliot saw in him!
Quirrelsotherface · 27/03/2021 22:10

Can anyone explain the Phoebe hate?

Also why it's so 'of its time' which is quoted on this thread a lot. I get it has dated but then, don't all sitcoms?

Honestly interested in specific examples, it's still one of my favourites. All of the characters are flawed but then so is every human on the planet.

ImWorriedAboutThis · 27/03/2021 22:16

I’ve said this about Phoebe before. The episode that sticks out to me the most, is when she introduces a guy to Monica saying that she thinks he is her soul mate. It’s really quite mean to Chandler.

Singlenmumprobs · 27/03/2021 22:19

@Quirrelsotherface Agree with all of what you’ve said

Singlenmumprobs · 27/03/2021 22:20

I’ve also always just taken it at face value, for the humour factor rather than looking at their actions and judging their morals and characters. I’ve never thought that deeply about it.

GrandTheftWalrus · 27/03/2021 22:20

@ImWorriedAboutThis she also makes Monica tell everyone that it was joey she was looking for when she went to their room. And tells chandler that Monica had lunch with Richard.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 27/03/2021 22:21

I think the opposite. Ross is awful and doesn't deserve Rachel.

He is jealous, petty, controlling, a poor father.
