I'm 29 so in no means "old" but I don't know what's happened the past couple of years.

I was bought up to respect police, not break the law. Obviously I have, underage drinking etc yet I've never been in trouble with police. Twitter is full of 17-20 year olds slagging off the police for breaking up protests etc hello we are in a pandemic and I'd really like to be out of lockdown soon?

Was also bought up to not judge anyone by their skin colour, religion, sexual orientation etc I have friends who are gay, black, white, Muslim, Jewish yet none of them understand this whole she/her announce your pronouns stuff, we all just respect each others preferences/views/religions/self identification.

Is anyone else feeling sick of this or am I alone???

Did you not see all of the "ACAB" banners over the last few weeks? Do you not realise what the acronym stands for?

OK, genuinely got a clue what ACAB stands for
@DdraigGoch which is exactly why i didn’t mention doctors or nurses, and instead referred to the previous poster’s examples of shopkeepers and driving instructors.
You did. Ignoring the elephant in the room which is that the poster you replied to listed other occupations which do have powers of life and death over people but unlike the police are considered by many people to be automatically beyond reproach.

I’m with you! People need to relearn respect and stop putting so much emphasis on things. I can respect all people without having it shoved down my throat.

So much drama. Just everywhere.

ClaudiaWankleman · 25/03/2021 22:18

Can you define ‘things’ please @User17930472 ?

Isn’t respect earned through behaviours?

I grew up in London and had respect for the police. Now I'm a Catholic living in NI and I have had my eyes opened to the racism, sectarianism and misogyny of the police force. I occasionally have dealings with them through work and last week I was threatened by a police officer for refusing to agree to do something illegal that would suit them.

Serin · 25/03/2021 22:32

I'm a HCP and my DH is a senior teacher, we lost respect for the Police a few years ago at a birthday party where a lot of them were present as friends of friends.
We were horrified at some of the "jokes" they were making. Then one of them squared up to DH and asked if he had a problem as he wasnt laughing at their racist, sexist, disabling jokes. Hmm

Smurfsarethefuture · 25/03/2021 22:33

Are we not talking about policy, legislation, court systems, CPS, etc? It seems that there is anger towards the whole apparatus and the police, as the frontline reps of that, are getting the criticism but I thought they only worked within the larger framework?

I am genuinely curious as to what alternatives people would like.

Serin · 25/03/2021 22:34

Disablist

ohhmyown · 25/03/2021 22:39

The law is the law you have to respect that. Racism and sexism in the police I'm sure is an issue in places. I have so many friends in various areas of the police and they are all very positive about it.

tangerinelollipop · 25/03/2021 23:20

I'm sick of the mob rule
I'm sick of the thought police (not the actual police)
I'm sick of self-appointed messianic disruptors playing Nero with our country
I'm sick of being preached at
I'm sick of others having the cheek to tell me I need to be educated when I simply don't share their views

So YANBU OP

tangerinelollipop · 25/03/2021 23:27

However, I do think that our society needs to be completely restructured so that the root causes of violence and abuse are addressed

If some seriously think we can reach a point as a society when police are not needed they must be living on a parallel universe (Little House on the Prairie - style)

mars2 · 25/03/2021 23:28

Addressing the root causes of violence & abuse & putting money & investment into tackling that doesn't equal living in the little house on the prairie.

pabloescobarselasticband · 25/03/2021 23:38

Theres a big difference between challenging the behaviour of the police and pure wanton violence, vandalism and destruction by moronic idiots who think that they are above societal norms of behaviour!

tangerinelollipop · 25/03/2021 23:42

@superplumb

You and your colleagues must be going through a very difficult (undeserved) time at the moment.

These threads are usually magnets for those who want to have a go at those who they perceive to be in control. Most people are grateful that there is a police force to protect us

doubleshotespresso · 25/03/2021 23:49

Think this sums things up nicely OP

Avon & Somerset Police literally lied about officers being injured in the clashes

The police had to be taken to hospital and they suspected they had broken bones and a punctured lung (!) due to the brutality and pain they were likely in. Once in hospital - after x-rays probably- they discovered they were not indeed fractured. Do you think the police will carry mobile x-ray machines to demonstrations to ensure accuracy of reporting at the scene?

Please stop misinforming

ShaneTheThird · 25/03/2021 23:57

No im sick of the police. Im 29 too. Sick of their corruption, bullying, misogyny and use of exessive force just because they know no one will win a case against them.

LemonSwan · 25/03/2021 23:59

I am 30. I agree but your OP is not really expressing the problem accurately.

Its a wide ranging problem and I have written about this on here before. Many of my peer group feel the same and other mid-late 20s groups have discussed this with me too.

The only theory we have which seems to hold ground is that they are the internet mobile phone generation. We had net, we had social media, we had phones. But never did we have 24 hrs access to echo chambers on a daily basis.
