To presume that drug dealers have moved in over the road?

ChelseeDagger · 25/03/2021 09:56

They don't seem to go to work, have five cars; a range rover, a mercedes, a BMW, an audi and a truck type thing.
A couple in their thirties with one child, renting the property in what is predominantly owner occupied road.

I'm going to get jumped on here, but they look rough, for want of a better word.

Am I being a twat for presuming they are drug dealers or money launderers/something else a bit unsavoury?

ChelseeDagger · 25/03/2021 10:16

I know they are renting because of the 'to let' sign that was previously in the front garden, now removed.

I think there's a difference between looking rough because you are slobbing around at home and looking rough because of a certain lifestyle. These people are definitely the latter.

Go over and welcome them to the neighbourhood but drop in some comments about the price of spice nowadays and see how they react

ChangedName4TheSakeOfIt · 25/03/2021 10:19

@ChelseeDagger I'm very anti drugs but their dealing has nothing to do with me I'm afraid. The only concern to me is that there is a baby living in a (presumed) dealer's house and it's a known fact that junkies, fellow dealers and the types associated with the lifestyle are far more likely to be unstable and possibly dangerous. They aren't "rough" or "dodgy looking" and don't cause any issues (like fighting in streets, parties etc) but you never know what could happen one day.

Cas112 · 25/03/2021 10:20

YABU, nothing to do with you. Get on with your own thing

x2boys · 25/03/2021 10:21

How do you know they are not working ? They could be working from or furloughed or doing unsocial hours?
Fwiw we have a brand new car we live in a council house,my DH earns just over minimum wage ,and I'm a carer for our disabled child,it's a mobilty car

Bourbonic · 25/03/2021 10:22

I think your claim of the cars being worth £400k really just demonstrates how dramatic you are.

They're probably working from home, like the millions of other people up and down the country. I'm doing it now. I'm not dressed, my hair is scraped in a bun and I have a face mask on. My face is unlikely to see make up until Monday when I have some video meetings.

Cas112 · 25/03/2021 10:23

I just don't understand why you would have cars totalling circa 400K when you are renting a house worth roughly half of that amount

This is not for you to understand? is it affecting your income? family life? sex life? work life? social life? no get a grip and stop being nosey.

inappropriateraspberry · 25/03/2021 10:23

They could, I don't know, be working from home?

Cushionsnotpillows · 25/03/2021 10:23

Yes you're being a judgemental twat Grin of course, but if there weren't such twats then MN would cease to exist and I wouldn't have entertainment for my coffee break, so judge away OP Wink

👏 to "don't join the police" Grin

ChelseeDagger · 25/03/2021 10:25

Well no, they presumably own these cars and they would have cost approx that figure when new.

If they had one brand new car I wouldn't be at all suspicious.

I am a bit pissed off that I seemingly can't park outside my house when I return from a 12 hour shift because these cars are all parked on the street (terraced housing, no driveways) but they are preumably all taxed so are entitled to park where they like.

jessstan2 · 25/03/2021 10:25

Don't be so flipping nosy and stop making assumptions when you know nothing about these people. Why not try extending the hand of friendship?

ChelseeDagger · 25/03/2021 10:26

Bloody hell OF COURSE its not affecting my life!

What is AIBU for if not exactly this type of post?!?

Most people around here are still going to work, only my husband is wfh out of all of our immediate neighbours.

Eh? It's about job role not location surely (unless you aren't UK based) so your 'most people around here' comment makes no sense. Do you think your neighbours are wondering why you two aren't working? You aren't both leaving the house every morning so you must be living off dodgy money...

So they aren't suited and booted and you deem them 'rough'. Maybe they just don't have suited / booted jobs but earn decent money? Like lots of people.

You've taken the time to post a thread, describe the home and cars, guess their value, lots of stuff. Why not have the balls to explain what you mean by 'rough' and 'living a certain kind of lifestyle'?

PineappleCat · 25/03/2021 10:28

Maybe they work from home? Or are furloughed? Or came into a big inhertience?Or maybe they're secretly aliens..... YABU by a long shot.

skirk64 · 25/03/2021 10:29

Get a covert CCTV camera that covers their property. Make sure it "accidentally" covers their house, don't be blatant about it. That way you can get evidence of their illegal behaviour.

The police won't do anything based on suspicion alone, I know that too well. I reported my neighbour for dealing drugs outside but nothing happened to him. (He was blatant about it, he'd "shake hands" with the customer then look at (the money in) his hand, then his girlfriend would "shake hands" while passing a small bag of powder to the customer.) To be fair to him he had a stealing-to-order business as well, his lifestyle wasn't just funded by drugs alone.

Mamamamasaurus · 25/03/2021 10:30

How TF can where you live define how many people WFH? Your post makes zero sense. YABU but you already know that.

My money is on they're renting the house because they've sold one mansion and needed a stop-gap before they can move onto their luxury yacht. That better OP?

BarbaraofSeville · 25/03/2021 10:31

I get that one house taking up five spaces is annoying, but it's a bit of a stretch to make the leap to them being drug dealers. Maybe they're car dealers?

But if all the cars are over 3 years old, then their value when new isn't relevant as your neighbours might not have bought them new, so wouldn't have shelled out the £400k anyway.

ChelseeDagger · 25/03/2021 10:33

Well, no its a WC/LMC area so most people are nurses, teachers/TAs, paramedics, retail staff, postal workers, bus drivers, care assistants, foster carers etc.

I think the propensity of those wfh is definitely tied to the demographic of a certain area.

Not many IT techs/solicitors etc around here.

You want me to describe in detail people who may be involved in a criminal underworld?

Even I'm not that stupid Grin

OP posts:
Crabwoman · 25/03/2021 10:37

They may be renting because they have just moved into the area. Or they may be renting because they are between properties and can't find a house they like. Or they may be renting because they are renovating a house. Or they may be renting because they have had a reduced income and have sold the house. Or they may be renting because...they just want to!!

RaginSpice · 25/03/2021 10:37

“Get a covert CCTV camera that covers their property. Make sure it "accidentally" covers their house, don't be blatant about it. That way you can get evidence of their illegal behaviour.”

Aye illegally record them, stalk them, and play private investigator.

Or perhaps get a hobby, a love interest, or a more fulfilling job, anything where you don’t become consumed by your neighbours life and not your own.

Bluntpencil · 25/03/2021 10:37

They might have broken the chain of a house purchase and need to rent short term? They might be working from home or furloughed? They might be drug dealers... if drug dealers you would see them either going out in the car for long spells over night or lots of people visiting the house.

Amichelle84 · 25/03/2021 10:38

Why don't you go over and ask for a gram and see what their reaction is...

WithTeaTree · 25/03/2021 10:38

Is this a serious post? You think the OP should carry out some kind of investigation into her neighbours? This isn’t Murder She Wrote. And if they are drug dealers, I wouldn’t fancy being the OP when they find out where the police got all their intel.

OP - If you have any actual evidence of serious criminal activity (which you don’t), then report them to the Police, anonymously if needs be. Otherwise, just leave it.

ChelseeDagger · 25/03/2021 10:43

They also have their groceries delivered by Iceland, not Sainsburys like the rest of us.....
