So frustrated. I do have adhd and anxiety so dunno if this is normal or not but feel so thick and stupid.

When cleaning the bathroom, I seem to end up with loads of drips running off the edge of the sink for example, it's clean water but just so sloppy looking. I use kitchen towel to mop it up.

I use a sponge for the sink and shower but for the loo I use kitchen towel or if the sponge is about to be thrown away I'll use it. But what do normal people do?

Do you have a sponge that's just for cleaning the loo separate and how long do you use it before chucking? It fucking grosses me out to think of having a loo sponge even though the loo is actually very clean. I do use a loo brush to give it a scrub it with a toilet cleaning product but that's the inside - when I say I use paper or a sponge for the loo I mean for the seat and around the top part to make sure no dust.

Feeling clueless and frustrated. It's trivial stuff but honestly I just want to be able to efficiently whip round my bathroom and have it clean and sparkling and neat, so can anyone give me sensible foolproof tips?

I hate cleaning, but like us all, want a clean house...

That is how I clean too, OP. It sounds fine to me.

ButterflyBitch · 24/03/2021 15:12

I use a microfibre cloth to clean the loo (seat/lid etc) and then it goes in the wash. I wouldn’t use it more than once.

Lou573 · 24/03/2021 15:16

I spray all over the loo then use loo roll to wipe it down and flush it.

Confusedandshaken · 24/03/2021 15:25

Washable microfibre cloths for sink and showers.

For the loos I buy packs of scrubby sponges, about £1 for a pack of 10 in supermarkets/Poundland etc. I do a proper clean of the loos, bowls, lids, pedestals, rims, U-bend with one of these and some Ajax every couple of weeks. Oven sponge does all 4 loos and then goes straight in the bin.

emmathedilemma · 24/03/2021 15:32

I use the rolls of blue cloths and only use them once. I do the sink and bath/shower in both bathrooms first. Squirt with bathroom cleaner and use the cloth to wipe round and remove the cleaner then dry off with kitchen roll. Then antibac-spray the toilet and wipe that off with kitchen roll and finally do round the rim with bleach and use the cloth to give it a good scrub before binning the cloth. Kitchen roll goes in the bin not down the toilet!

Peace43 · 24/03/2021 15:33

I used to do hotel bathrooms. The outgoing towels were used at the end of a clean to dry stuff. I had rubber gloves, squirty bathroom cleaner (I like flash because it smells nice) and a big bottle of bleach.

Replace loo roll as needed, collect all rubbish and change bin bag, take everything off bath sides, sink and shower. Fill the sink with hot water. Squirt bleach under loo rim. Squirt plenty of flash all over everything. Use cloth 1 in hot water to clean bath and shower. Dry immediately with old towel. Use an old toothbrush round taps/edges as needed. More drying. Clean glass with glass cleaner and more drying. Wash the outsides of bottles in sink with cloth. Dry. Replace. Empty sink, squirt, clean with cloth. Dry sink. Squirt loo surfaces, clean with cloth and then dry. Bundle cloth up with towels for a boil wash. Use loo brush to scrub loo. Anything fabric gets dunked in zoflora for an hour (e.g. bottom of shower curtain).

ComtesseDeSpair · 24/03/2021 15:34

First, I get naked. Don’t ask me why, I just always have done. Then, I spray the bowl and outside of the WC liberally with white vinegar. I use a wet sponge (usually the dishwashing sponge for its very final use before being thrown away) and more vinegar to wipe all over the outside of the WC, then all over the inside and under the rim. I put cleaner inside the bowl to sit for an hour or so. Goodbye, sponge.

I then use another sponge kept only for this purpose and more vinegar to wipe all over the basin. Then, I turn the shower on and get under it, and clean all over the bath, shower, tiles and screen etc whilst it’s running. This means that I end up washing myself with Cilit Bang Grime and Lime, but if doesn’t appear to have done me any harm so far.

Bluntness100 · 24/03/2021 15:34

I clean inside with a brush and use a clean cloth for the outside and wash it after.

Megan2018 · 24/03/2021 15:34

I have copied what my cleaner used to do (we can no longer afford her Sad)
We have colour coded microfibre cloths, so the same colour gets used for loos each time. Used once and washed.

Different colour for bath/shower/sink and then different colour again for kitchen.
I use one to wet and one to dry.

Tianatiers · 24/03/2021 15:35

I'm feeling pretty mank because I use the sane cloth until it starts to look ropey. I use those sponge clothes you get in a multi pack of different colours. They're square and I cut them in half. I use pink for the sink (and bath), blue for the loo. I start by putting bleach down the loo and brushing it around with the toilet brush, then I let that soak in while I clean the rest of the toilet. I use an anti bac bathroom spray, spray a bit on the cloth and wipe all over the surfaces of the toilet. Then I rinse it all off with a damp cloth after it's all soaked in and killed the germs. Then I clean the sink and the bath/shower and anti bac all the door and cupboard handles. Then I clean the mirror with glass cleaner and kitchen roll. Then I give the toilet a flush and clean the floor.

Atalune · 24/03/2021 15:39

Empty Bin

Put bleach under rim of loo. Leave with loo brush in there.
Put cig cream cleaner around the rim of the bath. Use a micro finer cloth and clean bath. Rinse.
Rinse cloth.
Cif clean the sink with cloth. Use blue paper towel to buff up. Rinse cloth. Put in the laundry.

Scrub loo with brush. Use a new cloth and spray cleaner to clean lid, set etc. Use blue paper towel to dry.

Steam mop floor.

Woah, hang on... So you've cleaned the bathroom between occupiers, then you dry it using towels used by the previous occupiers, therefore spreading their germs all over the clean bathroom to be used by the new occupiers? How is that hygienic?

So the bathroom that looks clean, isn't actually clean?
I'm all for saving the planet and I use my towels more than once between washes, but this is grim.
Do you know of this is standard in all hotels etc?

It might be non problematic germs in most cases but there are so many that infections that could be passed on to the new occupiers.

Atalune · 24/03/2021 15:43

Shower is big so I go in there and spray/scrub/rinse naked!

therocinante · 24/03/2021 15:44

Spray everything with bathroom spray (or the tiles with the mold and mildew spray if they're getting grim). Bleach down toilet, leave it 5 minutes.

Scrub bath/taps/sink/shower head clean with scrubby cloth, put in wash. Rinse down with water, shine the taps with a microfibre cloth if I'm feeling fancy and then use it to dry the sink/top of bath off to stop drips.

Toilet brush to scrub inside of toilet, flush, stick another of the gel splat things in. Bathroom spray and microfibre cloth to clean round the seat etc, starting with the outside bits (i.e. the cleaner bits, handle and top first). Throw that in wash too.

Bath mat and hand towel in wash. Wipe down windowsill, spray mop the floor (sometimes).

Then the cloths used and the hand towel/bath mat all get washed on a hot wash.

(This is what I do when I'm doing it properly - so once a week - if I'm just sprucing up a bit it's just clean the toilet, sink and bath and don't bother with drying off/shining taps/cleaning windowsill/washing bath mat).

greycloudysky · 24/03/2021 15:47

This is what I do but beware, it's the slacker guide:

  • Take everything off all surfaces
  • Squirt all surfaces with Method mint anti bac cleaner
  • Squirt Method glass cleaner on the mirrors/glass surfaces
  • Liberally squirt Eco toilet cleaner, pine and mint around inside of toilet.
  • Squirt Method all over toilet lid and lift lid and squirt on toilet, cistern etc
  • Run cloth over bathroom bin, empty bin and put inner bin in dishwasher

Have a cup of tea or go and deal with other stuff. After some time, go back to bathroom and rinse and wipe all surfaces, scrub out toilet and flush, wipe over mirrors/glass with microfibre cloth. Use shower attachment to rinse over bath.

Have a cup of tea while robo hoover runs over floors.

Fill up mop bucket with boiling water and soda crystals. Wash bathroom floor.

Et voila!

LakieLady · 24/03/2021 15:48

Microfibre cloths and bog brush here.

Squirt Harpic liquid (bleach doesn't work on the dreadful limescale we get because of our very hard water) all round the inside of the lav while I clean all the other bits (bath, basin, shower, cistern and outside of lav) with bathroom spray and a microfibre cloth. Then I do the windows and mirrors with glass cleaner and a proper window cleaner's scrim and the floor.

Finally, I scrub the inside of the lav and clean under the rim with the microfibre cloth.

TheAirbender · 24/03/2021 15:51

Agreed! I am shocked at dirty towels being used to wipe down a clean bathroom...ugh...Please tell me other hotels don't do this!!!!!!!!!!!!

TheAirbender · 24/03/2021 15:54

sorry - that was an agreement with @jessieoh

SmashedAvocado · 24/03/2021 15:58

I fill dilute a few squirts of bleach in hot water in the sink, wet a cloth in it then clean all around the loo with it. Any loo germs are zapped by the bleach so they won’t stay on the cloth. Squirt bleach round the rim. I then use that same cloth to clean the rest of the bathroom with an anti bac cleaner, rinse cloth out and put in a basket I use for cleaning stuff behind the loo to re use. I use the super absorbent cloths (£1 from Tesco for 3) as they wring out almost dry and last for ages.

In between proper cleans like that I use disposable anti bac wipes to give the sink, windowsill and loo a quick wipe round.

I used to chambermaid when I was at school 30 odd years ago and we did it then! Yes it's grim.
sunflowersandbuttercups · 24/03/2021 16:05

I use method anti-bac spray and washable microfibre cloths.

1 - remove everything from the sides.
2 - spray mirror, sink, bath/shower, windows and toilet.
3 - use a microfibre cloth - start with the mirror and work round, leaving the toilet to last. The cloth goes in the wash and then I squirt toilet cleaner down, scrub and flush.

Takes about 5-10 minutes 2-3 times a week.

Anothermuddywalk · 24/03/2021 16:07

I use microfibre cloths - I use two for the bathroom - one I use to clean everything, and I do the loo seat etc last, then put the cloth straight in the washing machine. The other I use to dry things like the sink, shower screen, mirrors etc.

Dandelionflower · 24/03/2021 16:12

I've worked in a few hotels, in every one we used the old towels to dry the bathroom after cleaning. So yes, looks clean but isn't, sometimes no cleaning products were used, just wiped dry. I never ever use the glass in a hotel bathroom. I've seen many a glass wiped with the towel, the towel used by the previous occupier, used to dry the bath sink and toilet, wipe the mirror and sometimes even the floor. I NEVER did this, I couldn't bring myself to but it was very common.

FreeButtonBee · 24/03/2021 16:13

I have billions of microfibre cloths so use one to clean with and then once to polish up with at the end. Normally one for shelves, window sills, sink and loo (do all of sink then all of loo) and put in wash. Inside of loo is cleaned using loo brush (silicone ones are a game changer!)

Then new pair for bath/shower. Then another for floor -the floor is tiny so normally just get on hands and knees and wash with a cloth rather than sloshing mop around.

After that clean mirror with new cloth and give door/handles/walls a bit of spot clean if there is anything. But my bathroom is teeny so this works pretty well.

1forAll74 · 24/03/2021 16:13

I use a toilet brush for inside toilet bowl, and a cloth of some kind,to clean all outside bowl and lid. I use any kind of general household cleaner, like Flash or Astonish, never buy stuff that says just bathroom cleaner,as the general ones are all the same for everything. But I like the CIF cream stuff, for the washbasin and bath.

I use cleaning sponges for wiping up drips on the floor, but not endlessly washing them after, and not endlessly ripping off lengths of kitchen towel either, it is not necessary if you have cleaning cloths or sponges.

I don't go around sanitising things, as the clean up process is cleaning everything.

I don't know about kitchen towels put down the toilet, but have blocked my loo up a couple of times, putting ordinary tissues down, when I ran out of loo roll.

I have to kind of sweep the bathroom floor as well, as their are some heating pipes under the floor, plus a good radiator, and my three cats all lounge around on the floor there,so always cat hairs to sweep up.
