How do you clean your bathroom? Help, please

So frustrated. I do have adhd and anxiety so dunno if this is normal or not but feel so thick and stupid.

When cleaning the bathroom, I seem to end up with loads of drips running off the edge of the sink for example, it's clean water but just so sloppy looking. I use kitchen towel to mop it up.

I use a sponge for the sink and shower but for the loo I use kitchen towel or if the sponge is about to be thrown away I'll use it. But what do normal people do?

Do you have a sponge that's just for cleaning the loo separate and how long do you use it before chucking? It fucking grosses me out to think of having a loo sponge even though the loo is actually very clean. I do use a loo brush to give it a scrub it with a toilet cleaning product but that's the inside - when I say I use paper or a sponge for the loo I mean for the seat and around the top part to make sure no dust.

Feeling clueless and frustrated. It's trivial stuff but honestly I just want to be able to efficiently whip round my bathroom and have it clean and sparkling and neat, so can anyone give me sensible foolproof tips?

I hate cleaning, but like us all, want a clean house...

I use minkey cloths to clean the shower as they’re a bit rougher and better at getting hardened blobs of soap etc off. Just use regular shower cleaner.

Use cif for sink and toilet - squirt some onto a cloth, rub all over, then remove with a damp cloth. I just leave it all to air dry.

Thick bleach in the toilet, let it sit for half an hour then flush.

Give the mirror and shower a quick rub with some glass spray at the end to remove grease etc.

twilightcafe · 25/03/2021 17:11

This thread confirms why I will carry on bringing my own travel mug and wipes to hotels.

Comfortzone · 25/03/2021 17:12

I'm definitely going to pack bathroom cleaning spray in my suitcase next time I'm going on a hotel trip...in 2034 when they are finally open...

birdglasspen · 25/03/2021 17:15

I clean an accommodation business and have worked in many hotels. To clean I have a cloth, spray on whatever I'm using, plenty hot water and wipe down sink/bath and then toilet last. I then polish off/dry with an old towel (kept for this purpose). Then all the cleaning cloths/towels go in a hot wash. For the mirror/chrome fittings I use an old glass cloth/tea towel or microfibre cloth and white vinegar or glass cleaner.

I like to think of the environment so don't use anti bac wipes, etc, would rather use something which can be used again after a wash! I agree with not using glasses in a hotel! However in my own business all glasses are put through a dishwasher or washed in hot water/fairy liquid at kitchen sink before being replaced!

I have seen hotels using the previous occupant's towels to dry off sink, shower, etc. Hopefully with covid regs they have cleaned up this act!! In my business I have a separate cloth and old towel for each toilet I do so no cross contamination, by old towel I mean one used only for cleaning not by anyone else for anything else! Actually, don't use cups in big hotels either unless you wash them first! Cleaners in big places certainly don't take cups/glasses down to a kitchen to clean they are done in a room by whatever means... (!) A towel or a glass cloth will be far better than kitchen towel!

Comfortzone · 25/03/2021 17:15

Why would hotels sanction cleaning like this? Yes they want shiny taps and surfaces etc but surely there are better ways? It's a massive health and safety issue! I might start emailing local authorities to get inspections done on how accommodation providers clean bathrooms Or let's just get Gordon's Hotel Nightmares onto every single hotel in the UK

ceilingsand · 25/03/2021 17:17

I re-use and wash cleaning cloths but I also make sure they are soaked in Milton snd washed at a high temperature, as lower temperatures don't kill germs. I don't use them for kitchens, obviously.

LIZS · 25/03/2021 17:23

Basin/bath/shower base and tiles - Bathroom spray cleaner, Spontex sponge , toothbrush for awkward spots around taps and plug holes etc. Polish away drips and taps with used towel or e cloth

Mirrors, glass and shower screen - white vinegar spray and ecloth

Toilet - antibac wipes and bleach

Steam mop on floor and tiles.

Laiste · 25/03/2021 17:46

I detest cleaning the bathroom. I do it weekly but with a face like a slapped arse Grin

  • Take down shower curtain and put in hot wash with bath mat (both white)
Empty bin and replace bag.
  • Hoover bathroom.
  • Tidy all DD3s bottles away.
  • White Ciff cream cleaner - squirt it all over the tiles round the bath as high as i can reach and all round bath. Clean bath and taps and tiles with cloth. Rinse it all with hot shower.
  • Into clean bath i put DD4s stool (to reach loo) and her loo seat and the lid of the bin and the lid of the storage/seat thing. Wash all them with Ciff and rinse with hot shower and leave them to dry in bath.
  • Loo. I put Ciff all over it and then go over with very hot wet cloth. Go over it again with hot wet cloth to rinse. Clean inside loo with loo cleaner and loo brush. Flush. Put bleach round under rim.
  • Clean bottles and toothpaste and tooth-mug in sink. Clean window ledge and put the clean things back.
  • Clean sink with Ciff.
  • wipe over mirror and top of electric shower and light pull handle.

Put fresh fluffy mat down and that's it.

Put shower curtains back up later.

I learn so much from mumsnet! Just added the little oxo scrubbing brushes to my Amazon basket ,thanks.

I’m quite slovenly - I clean bath & basin whenever it looks grubby with a sponge for bathroom surfaces, risnse, squeeze & put back in cupboard. A bit a viyakil or other bathroom spray if there’s limescale or grime, otherwise just sponge, hot water & elbow grease for a quick clean of dust & spilt toothpaste splodges.

Clean loo with bleach & loo brush then use a bit of wet loo roll to wipe top / sides & seat & rim then flush it away.

We have a cleaner and she gets the shower door sparkling using mr muscle, I hate the way it smells but nothing else seems to work. It doesn’t work very well when I do it but is better than nothing!

Recently my son had an accident near the loo & the only spray to hand was viyakil so I used that, left it for a bit then wiped, and when I wiped discovered the beige travertine tiles & the grout were several shades lighter than I though they were! Yuk! This is with a cleaner mopping every week for years. I then spent a happy couple of hours spraying viyakil on every inch of the floor & scrubbing it with micro fibre cloth & old toothbrush for the grout with buckets of hot water, and now admire my nice clean-like-new floor every time I walk past the bathroom. My cleaner was most impressed when she came back after lockdown and I think I have gone up in her estimation! Halo

reader12 · 25/03/2021 17:51

I might also put some antibacterial wipes in the cupboard to do the outside of the loo & loo seat better, having discovered from this thread how unhygienic I am! I’m another who can’t quite cope with things that have been used on the loo going in the wash and being used again. I never used to use wipes until COVID because they’re wasteful but I do now find them useful. They always go in the bin though, never flushed to add to the fatbergs!

StapMe · 25/03/2021 18:18

Reader 12 - Viakal and similar scale cleaners should not be used on real travertine/marble. They will etch and damage the surface. If your travertine looks extra clean, it will be because a) it's not real travertine anyway or b) you have "melted" off the top surface (professional cleaners take off the top surface too, only they do it with grinders and polishers) along with the gunk and any seal. If this is the case it will resoil very quickly, so you maybe need to check if it needs resealing. Or wait until it does and carry on with the Viakal......you were very lucky, some floors would have been ruined.

Lantanacamara · 25/03/2021 18:34

I was laid up in a hotel bed with a slipped disc and had the pleasure of watching the housekeeping doing their bathroom clean. They used the old towels to polish the inside of the toilet bowl and then moved onto the sink [boak]. I don't care that they're boil washed after, the thought of wiping my face with sonething that has been down the loo is just rank.

reader12 · 25/03/2021 19:23

@Stapme thanks, I did wonder if it was a bit too brutal but was so much fun to see it change colour I couldn’t resist carrying on! I’ll look into resealing it.

[quote KitchenFairy]Well I didn't expect this. This thread has been both amusing and horrifying...

First, I get naked. Don’t ask me why, I just always have done. Grin

I will never ever again use one of those little glasses in a hotel bathroom, now I know that it's probably covered in arse particles of the rooms previous occupant, after being wiped over with their used towels. Envy

ChiaraRimini · 25/03/2021 20:12

Lantanacamera must have eyes on stalks to be laid up in bed in a hotel room and still able to see how the toilet bowl in the en suite is cleaned /s

Lantanacamara · 25/03/2021 20:20

No eyes on stalks Chiara, I was semi upright and had full view of the bathroom as she was cleaning.

Happygogoat · 25/03/2021 20:23

Everyone throwing away cloths after one use please think about the environment!! Microfibres can be used once and disinfected.

littledrummergirl · 25/03/2021 20:50

I put toilet cleaner in toilet, under the rim, spray the sink, bath and tiles with either bathroom cleaner or jif. I clean the mirror and window with window wipes, wash down the windowsill, shelves, radiator and doors with a bucket of hot soapy water and blue cloth then wipe down the tiles and bath with a bathroom sponge.
I clean the toilet with toilet duck brush things, starting with the lid and seat, then doing the outside before finishing inside it. I wipe it all down with toilet paper and it all gets flushed away.
Then I clean the sink with bathroom sponge and old toothbrush.
Finally I finish by sweeping and mopping the floors.
I do this twice a week and every now and then I chuck descale down the toilet.

twilightcafe · 26/03/2021 09:43

This thread inspired me to get scrubbing last night. Grin

All I can add is to use Flash Gel neat and a kitchen scourer to get rid of hard water marks on shower screens.
Rinse off, then polish the screen with a dry microfibre cloth.

twilightcafe · 26/03/2021 09:43

Scourers and cloths go in a hot wash with detergent and disinfectant.

LadyCatStark · 26/03/2021 10:00

@Peace43

I used to do hotel bathrooms. The outgoing towels were used at the end of a clean to dry stuff. I had rubber gloves, squirty bathroom cleaner (I like flash because it smells nice) and a big bottle of bleach.

Replace loo roll as needed, collect all rubbish and change bin bag, take everything off bath sides, sink and shower. Fill the sink with hot water. Squirt bleach under loo rim. Squirt plenty of flash all over everything. Use cloth 1 in hot water to clean bath and shower. Dry immediately with old towel. Use an old toothbrush round taps/edges as needed. More drying. Clean glass with glass cleaner and more drying. Wash the outsides of bottles in sink with cloth. Dry. Replace. Empty sink, squirt, clean with cloth. Dry sink. Squirt loo surfaces, clean with cloth and then dry. Bundle cloth up with towels for a boil wash. Use loo brush to scrub loo. Anything fabric gets dunked in zoflora for an hour (e.g. bottom of shower curtain).

Ewww at wiping a clean bathroom with someone else’s used towel 🤢

I use disposable wipes TBH. I know they’re not good for the environment but they’re good for my sanity. I’m much more environmentally friendly in all other areas!

HelplessProcrastinator · 26/03/2021 10:09

Another vote for washable micro fibre cleaning cloths. I use Ecover toilet cleaner and cream cleanser. All sparkling clean. We have very soft water so limes ale no issue.

I worked in two hotels as a student and confirm dirty towels for drying the surfaces after washing. We were provided with bleach and something a bit like washing up liquid only. It was in vats and we topped up spray bottles daily. Cups and glasses dried with dirty towels. House keeper left to work at a 5 star hotel while I was there 🤮

MAPEI · 26/03/2021 10:19

I buy a packet of antibacterial wipes either the dettol ones or the sainsburys own brand (£2 I think they are, you get 40 in a pack) and use them for wiping the toilets. I empty the bathroom bin first (i.e take the bin liner out) and then carry this around with me and after I’ve done each toilet (3 in our house) I bin them. People keep flushing these down the toilet, you mustn’t do that, clogs drains.

I use loo brush and bleach to clean the cistern.

For showers/ baths and sinks I use a cloth (again I buy a cheap pack of 6 from sainos for about 50p) and a green scouring pad thing (£1 for a pack of 4 from sainos) and I use dettol anti bac spray and vikal for the taps/ shower screen for limescale. Each cloth and scourer get 4 uses (I clean for 2 hours every Friday or Saturday) so they get a months worth of use and then they’re binned and I get fresh ones out.

Member984815 · 26/03/2021 10:51

Dust with dry cloth hoover everywhere so you not moving wet dust around . Then spray cleaner on surfaces separate cloth, for loo and in wash after dry with clean microfiber cloth after mop after all that
