So frustrated. I do have adhd and anxiety so dunno if this is normal or not but feel so thick and stupid.

When cleaning the bathroom, I seem to end up with loads of drips running off the edge of the sink for example, it's clean water but just so sloppy looking. I use kitchen towel to mop it up.

I use a sponge for the sink and shower but for the loo I use kitchen towel or if the sponge is about to be thrown away I'll use it. But what do normal people do?

Do you have a sponge that's just for cleaning the loo separate and how long do you use it before chucking? It fucking grosses me out to think of having a loo sponge even though the loo is actually very clean. I do use a loo brush to give it a scrub it with a toilet cleaning product but that's the inside - when I say I use paper or a sponge for the loo I mean for the seat and around the top part to make sure no dust.

Feeling clueless and frustrated. It's trivial stuff but honestly I just want to be able to efficiently whip round my bathroom and have it clean and sparkling and neat, so can anyone give me sensible foolproof tips?

I hate cleaning, but like us all, want a clean house...

I use one of those washing up sponges on a stick that you fill with cleaning liquid. I’ve got a blue flash one at the moment.
Use one to go all over sink, shower and surfaces and then rinse off with a fresh cloth and hot water. Separate one for the toilet.

I also clean the shower while I’m in it which is much easier and once I’ve rubbed it all over with my sponge on a stick, I just rinse it off with the hand held shower.

The real problem I have is that DP still does not understand using the squeegee to wipe down the shower screen after he’s used it and the dried on water looks so messy. I clean it regularly but the bottom never gets sparkly. Any ideas what I could use?

If I do it myself then, green coloured cloths for bathrooms. Hot washed after every use.
Open window. Empty bin. Start with mirrors and window ledges. Multi surface cleaner for those. Fill basin with water and bleach. Use that to clean sink. Toothbrush for base of taps and overflow. Empty. Use drain cleaner whilst rest of room is cleaned.
Change soap and hand towel.
Clean underside of basin, pipes and skirting board.
The bath is cleaned after ever use, so I just check it’s OK. Wipe taps and toothbrush around base.
Lavatory I flush first then use brush with lavatory cleaner in bowl. Then wipe chain pull. Then seat and outside of bowl.
Cloth then goes into wash.
Boiling water down plug hole to clear cleaner.
Use bathroom mop to mop floor using disinfectant.
Once dry, close windows.

Hoover floor, spray shower, toilet cleaner in toilet, clean round toilet with sponge (blue), toilet brush to clean inside, dry off toilet with microfibre cloth. Clean sink with spray and sponge (pink), clean mirror, wipe down heater. Back to shower, clean drain, sponge down tiles/doors, rinse, wipe away water with squeegee, buff with microfiber cloth. Dry off sink then mop.

I'm a domestic cleaner and that is my routine.

I used Head & Shoulders shampoo & an old toothbrush to scrub off grime around the sink & in shower basin today. I suspect this is not conventional, but I don't mind. It was pretty effective. And I needed to do something with the shampoo. No one will wash hair with it.

Laggartha · 24/03/2021 19:55

I clean the toilet with the same spray and cloth as the rest of the bathroom. Everything under the lid gets the same spray but I use a couple of sheets of toilet paper instead of the cloth. Every few days the bowl gets a squirt of bleach or limescale remover.

hellcatspangle · 24/03/2021 19:56

I use loo roll for the loo and sponge/microfibre cloth for the sink. For the shower I clean it when I'm in it before I have a shower, and also use the daily shower screen spray to stop limescale building up.

@Dandelionflower

I've worked in a few hotels, in every one we used the old towels to dry the bathroom after cleaning. So yes, looks clean but isn't, sometimes no cleaning products were used, just wiped dry. I never ever use the glass in a hotel bathroom. I've seen many a glass wiped with the towel, the towel used by the previous occupier, used to dry the bath sink and toilet, wipe the mirror and sometimes even the floor. I NEVER did this, I couldn't bring myself to but it was very common.
faints

That’s so gross!!!!!! Envy and that’s not envy!

tashac89 · 24/03/2021 20:12

Harpic under the rim of the toilet each night before bed. Antibac over toilet, sink and bath. The toilet gets wiped down then with toilet roll, colour coded cloths for the rest. A soft bristle scrubby brush for the glass screen, glass cleaner and a minky glass cloth for all glass and metal. Steam mop for the floors with bathroom only covers.

@SmashedAvocado

How filthy are people toilets if they have to have special cloths to wipe them over that get binned or straight in the wash? I assume a separate wash Hmm.

I have 3 boys (preteen and teen) and a DH and they were all trained to pee sitting down at home so there’s no pee on the loo seats.

Exactly. People are germ crazy.

My loo cloth gets a good rinse under the hot water tap after using and then in with the darks

ComtesseDeSpair · 24/03/2021 20:49

I suppose it depends on how you clean the loo. I don’t have a toilet brush so when I clean the loo I get scrubbing right down into the bowl and around the u-bend with my sponge in hand. Like I said, I use the washing up sponge when it’s on its last legs to do this, and it doesn’t seem worth saving after that.

I once had a flatmate who used to clean the basin and tiles etc after the loo, with the same cloth she’d just been wiping the loo with. Somehow that felt incredibly icky, but by the time I found out we’d been living together for several months and it hasn’t killed me, so maybe we could all take a leaf out of her book.

Complete aside, but I also once had a flatmate who vacuumed the table and kitchen worktops rather than wipe them. I’ve had some interesting flatmates.

I've heard about hotel housekeeping using towels before, try not to think to much about it. Like gym changing rooms/showers if I think too much about how clean they really are I can't use them. Not killed me yet so I've been lucky so far.

As a side question, does anyone have any products they can recommend for cleaning the shower please? I'm about to move to a house with a decent shower and proper cubicle, I've only had a cheap shower with a shower curtain before.

It’s very basic infection prevention and control. Nobody would want a lavatory cloth used on kitchen surfaces, surely? Worse than using the same chopping board for everything.

Nellie850 · 24/03/2021 22:11

@ComtesseDeSpair ‘first I get naked’ this has made me laugh so much! I have a picture of your nakedness in my head running around with a loo brush!

Method shower spray after every shower then use viakal. Spray, leave then rinse and the glass is gleaming.
notanothertakeaway · 24/03/2021 22:19

Silicone toilet brush is FAR better than a traditional plastic brush with bristles

Comfortzone · 25/03/2021 07:26

Bleach around sink bath and loo, cut around the bath as it smells nicer than bleach

Wipe away with kitchen roll and rinse with hot water

I don't.like the idea of germs lingering on cloths and being reused

Really don't like the idea of the occupants' dirty towels in hotel rooms being used to dry a bathroom AFTER it has been 'cleaned' 🤮

Unless I've misunderstood the earlier post about this?

Not so bothered about missing hotel stays now during lockdown!

Comfortzone · 25/03/2021 07:27

Oh and the used kitchen roll goes into a bin, not flushed down the loo.

Comfortzone · 25/03/2021 07:33

*CIF around the bath as it smells nicer

MrsClatterbuck · 25/03/2021 11:04

Just remembered that when I worked in a Guest House as a summer job the sink in the bedrooms used to get blue stains and we cleaned them using Ariel washing powder. Left them absolutely gleaming.
I clean around the taps with one of those sonic scrubbers or one of those small oxo brushes that look like a toothbrush.

AvaCallanach · 25/03/2021 11:19

I squirt the loo cleaner and let it soak, use bathroom cleaner on the sink, bath and loo seat and cistern. Use the same thin spongey cloth for all those jobs but the loo gets done last. Then use loo brush in the loo itself. Finally mop the floor.

Once a week ish I drop a bleach tablet in the loo last thing at night.

Too much cleanliness is very bad for the immune system. This fact makes me very happy.Smile

ghostyslovesheets · 25/03/2021 11:24

I use micro fibre cloths for the sink and back - with spray cleaner - glass cleaner on the shower screen with kitchen roll and disposable wipes for the toilet (in the bin not flushed) then mop the floor

ghostyslovesheets · 25/03/2021 11:24

bath!

GwendolineWindowlene · 25/03/2021 11:26

So, those people who use a sponge and then throw it away, are you using and disposing of a new sponge every week?

Paperyfish · 25/03/2021 13:14

I worked in hotels 20 odd years ago as a student. We used the last occupants towels/ pillowcases as cleaning/ buffing cloths. And we always were low on cleaning products so were very stingy with them. Frequently only had Ajax type stuff in stock so would clean everything with that. Including tea set and glasses. Sorry. This was quite a nice hotel too!

myneighbourisaCF · 25/03/2021 13:48

I have a dishmatic that I fill with bicarb of soda, vinegar, water and washing up liquid. Clean the shower and bath whilst im in the shower then clean the sink with the same dishmatic and wipe dry with microfibre cloth. Then i have flushable toilet wipes for the loo and they disolve like loo paper but also have a cleaning agent in them so just clean all over the loo with them then flush it.
Then bleach under the loo rim.
Clean mirrors with microfibre cloth.
