It's for a clinical position on a children's ward. I've not interviewed in person for a long time!! Is this professional enough?

To wear this for an interview?

The skirt won't be poofy on, they show these dresses with a petticoat, I think it would be lovely.

maddening · 23/03/2021 22:27

I wore a patterned dress (all greys) and had a black shrug over..

GreyhoundG1rl · 23/03/2021 22:28

If op has current registration, answers well,appears competent..she’ll get appointed
That's actually what you said, Heels... I hope you're right, but if there are other candidates op has to be better, not just turn up and "appear competent".

Well, if we are doing this you said @Greyhound you said I’m shouldn’t assume clinical = nurse
Op is a nurse.advanced practitioner. I’d say i made the correct assumption

GreyhoundG1rl · 23/03/2021 22:54

Did I say that? I'm pretty sure I didn't.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 23/03/2021 22:57

@GreyhoundG1rl I apologise I have misrepresented you
Someone else quote attributed to you

GreyhoundG1rl · 23/03/2021 22:58

No worries

Op, do let us know if you’re successful

ArabellaScott · 23/03/2021 23:09

Good luck with the interview, OP, whatever you wear!

IReallyNeedMoreGin · 23/03/2021 23:31

I love this dress! Was gonna buy it for a wedding but it's been postponed twice!

BungleandGeorge · 23/03/2021 23:46

@HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee

Yes as I said trained staff are in shortage HCA not so much the case. Location and reputation of employer will potentially attract more applicants
Yes job role and grade within the professions you’ve mentioned. Makes a huge difference. The jobs not filled are generally because they’re graded lower than neighbouring areas or lower than the JD.
XelaM · 23/03/2021 23:47

Very pretty. Good choice

BungleandGeorge · 23/03/2021 23:50

The thing bothering me is that you said about wearing it with a black belt and navy shoes and tights?! What colour is the dress? It looks black?

HarmonyHedges · 23/03/2021 23:50

No.

steff13 · 23/03/2021 23:52

I like it, but I think it's a little bold for an interview.

BungleandGeorge · 23/03/2021 23:53

And a navy cardigan? Black and navy together hard no!

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 23/03/2021 23:56

Agree with others that it's a bit dressy - short boxy black jacket with it - when you're sitting down, it would look fine.

LastRoloIsMine · 23/03/2021 23:56

I LOVE the dress however for a job interview as much as I want to say I do not judge on appearance we all do.
Going for a flamboyant your personality is a huge influence/part of the job yes this dress is spot on.
Professional job requiring you to put your personality aside in favour of others needs then no.

I say this as a care manager.

youremyperson · 24/03/2021 00:03

@BungleandGeorge the dress is navy!

OP posts:
AdoptedBumpkin · 24/03/2021 00:16

If in doubt, I wouldn't.

groovergirl · 24/03/2021 00:41

Gorgeous dress, but for an interview I'd say tone it down with a short, fitted navy jacket (neat waist, slight flare at the hip) and beige or tan shoes (never black or navy!). No floofy petticoats. If you want your clothes to say "competent and reliable with a bit of fun and flamboyance that children will love", this would be a good look.

Otherwise, play it very safe and demure in a black or grey suit with a touch of colour in the scarf or necklace.

Good luck! It sounds like an interesting role.

I’m astonished by some of the responses here.

This isn’t a corporate role. We aren’t living in the 1980s. I wonder how many of you have interviewed for lots of roles or interviewed women for management positions or worked in management with lots of women in non-corporate roles or in the medical world.

Women wear dresses all the time in high up positions. They wear dresses with colour and patterns. People are not just wearing plain navy and black sorts or dare I say it, trousers anymore with a ‘blouse’. Outfits with colour and pattern don’t have to scream ‘look at me, I’m mad’ when worn with a jacket or cardigan which tones it down and looks professional and with the right bag, shoes and accessories. It doesn’t have to look like a wedding our party outfit and often a tailored dress looks far smarter than some cheap trousers and a blouse.

It is all about the role and expectations in that industry. Few roles couldn’t tolerate a coloured dress now or would be horrified at interview. I think people imagining this aren’t actually working in HR or carrying out interviews. In the medical world, people are in uniform or are actually pretty informal in attire. It tends to be a dress and cardigan or chinos and a sports jacket rather than a power suit. Power dressing is actually rather looked down on.

This outfit is fine. It is smart and speaks of confidence (which lots of people seem to lack on this thread in terms of their clothes. It could look extremely professional if put with the right items.

Good luck.
