To wear this for an interview?

It's for a clinical position on a children's ward. I've not interviewed in person for a long time!! Is this professional enough?

To wear this for an interview?

It is a lovely dress but not right for the kind of interview you will be having. No harm in buying it to wear anyway. Good luck for the interview.

PurpleWh1teGreen · 24/03/2021 07:41

I used to recruit specialist band 7/8a posts to run community services aimed at keeping people out of acute beds.

I needed people who were appropriately skilled & qualified and also effective communicators. Professionals who were able to step up as autonomous practitioners, confident in their own practice and able to challenge and be challenged by those who disagreed with them.

Quite honestly, as long as they didn’t turn up to interview looking like they had been dragged through a hedge backwards I couldn’t care less, but as it happens a dress with a bit of wow factor would probably have a favourable impact, as I would associate it with someone who knew their own mind.

Good luck for the interview OP in my view it’s a fabulous dress.

I think some responses are a bit much, but I don't think everyone who is advising caution is necessarily being unreasonable.
Like it or not, people do form first impressions and how we present ourselves does affect judgements (it's the reason I'm convinced that some men in education with 2 minutes classroom experience but a sharp suit find themselves in middle or senior leadership).

If the aim of an interview is to get a job, and there's a chance that my outfit would detract from what I'm saying, then it wouldn't be the hill I'd chose to die on. I'd tone it back a bit, get the job, see what's the typical attire at the workplace and be a bit more personal/creative once in post.

What PurpleWhiteGreen just said...

When I worked for NHS, there was a colleague wore a specific outfit with wonderfully matching shoes. I don't notice shoes at all, but they just set the tone and caught even my eye. She was in charge of contracts, probably Band 7. Everyone knew she was in the room when she wore those Power shoes...

tbh, NHS is full of lots of wonderful Dragon Ladies who masterfully control the meetings they Chair. Coming from another industry where waffly unproductive unaccountable meetings are the norm, I loved NHS meetings. There were senior clinical advisors with visible tattoos sticking oar in and holding room, too. I suspect some of you are in stone age if you think bright clothes & personal touches are somehow misplaced.

I see some insightful & balanced posts from people who actually know what they’re talking about. As opposed to inappropriate comments about business meetings, and all the Poundland Susanna and Trinny types opining on op dress choice.

How refreshing @WombatChocolate and @PurpleWh1teGreen.

Couldn't agree more.

I once wore a red dress and black leggings to an interview. I didn't get the job, but they called me up a few months later and asked if we could meet up to talk about it again, and they mentioned the red dress lol. It wasn't a particularly professional job, it was an animal assisted therapy job visiting schools with the animals etc, if I had been in a different situation (was trying to get pregnant at the time and part of the job was caring for different types of farm animals) I would've done it. I do wonder if the dress had something to do with it lol. I like it, but my background is learning disabilities nursing which is more laid back I suppose

MedusasBadHairDay · 24/03/2021 10:56

I wear stuff like that day to day, so absolutely would wear it to an interview. I usually do quite well at interviews too. So I would, but if you are doubting your choice and feel self conscious in it then you may struggle to sell yourself in an interview. I'd say wear something that makes you feel confident, if that dress does then definitely wear it.

youremyperson · 24/03/2021 15:49

I got the job

It's lovely. But I'm afraid it would be distracting. I'd want to know about the dress etc if I were interviewing. Having said that yellow or shots of is a good colour to wear, I believe it represents responsibility and confidence.

Disfordarkchocolate · 24/03/2021 15:54

Congratulations. Did you wear the dress? I would have but the bright green dress I wore to most of my recent interviews would have made some posters faint!

youremyperson · 24/03/2021 15:59

I did wear the dress. The person in front of me wore t shirt and jeans the people who interviewed me wore scrubs. It wasn't very formal but I got the job so that's great!

VienneseWhirligig · 24/03/2021 16:09

I dress in things like that day to day, and have worn similar to interviews previously. I'm fairly senior in the public sector and have brightly coloured hair too. Never stopped me being promoted and in my last interview, the director who interviewed me was wearing something similar herself.

MiscUser9823 · 24/03/2021 16:09

No, just no.

Wear a smart shirt and blouse / suit pants / something formal
