DH just told 4 year old ‘being a grown up was rubbish’

AIBU to really object to this? DD was playing around saying she wished she was grown up and DH said ‘You don’t want to be a grown up, being a grown up is rubbish’!!! I’m so annoyed with him, what a stupid thing to say! He says he meant enjoy being a child, obviously I agree with that, but why say something so negative? I don’t really know where it came from either, he has a very stressful job, but we have a lovely life and are in general very happy. He thinks I am totally over the top to be annoyed that he said it and tell him it was a silly thing to say. So AIBU?

OMG
Here have a Bear because your clearly childish

bellie710 · 22/03/2021 17:36

We say that all the time, the kids are always saying they want to be a grown up and me and DH regularly say there is no rush to be a grown up as it is rubbish! You have to go to work all the time, pay bills, deal with problems with your parents etc, enjoy being a child as it is time you will never get back.
You are not unreasonable as it is your opinion, however he is not unreasonable for having a different opinion but not something I could get upset about myself.

Chickoletta · 22/03/2021 17:37

OP - AIBU?
All of MN - Yes
OP - No I’m not.

These posts are so frustrating!!

MintLampShade · 22/03/2021 17:41

YABVVU!!! What a thing to get annoyed about! And why did you take it so personally? My parents used to say this and we had a lovely family life. And now as an adult, I totally get where they were coming from, I wish I didn't insist on growing up so quickly! Being a kid is so much more fun! And no, I don't hate my life. Jeeez....

imalmostthere · 22/03/2021 17:43

You're being ridiculous.
Also why did you post if you were going to argue until you were blue in the face that you're right?
I don't get why you'd ask if YABU if you're adamant you aren't!!

Biker47 · 22/03/2021 17:44

Being grown up is rubbish.

You're massively over reacting.

gerbilfur · 22/03/2021 17:46

He's right, it's totally shit.

He could have worded it differently maybe, told her to enjoy her childhood as that's such a fun time.

But being an adult is horrible. For me it's just been loss. Loss of youth, loss of loved ones, loss of good health, loss of looks, loss of money.

It's crap.

Callingallskeletons · 22/03/2021 17:47

Erm but being a grown up is rubbish????

We quite often tell our DC this 😂

Peppermintpatty24 · 22/03/2021 17:49

YABU. Adulthood is shite. Embrace the childhood years.

mumof2exhausted · 22/03/2021 17:52

YABU and frankly ridiculous. Your poor husband

toocold54 · 22/03/2021 17:52

Encourage children to stay young for as long as they possibly can!

ImInStealthMode · 22/03/2021 17:56

YABU. Being a grown up IS rubbish at times, and compared to being 4 it's rubbish 100% of the time.

Having kids is signing them up for all sorts of pain and loss, as well as joy and happiness. It's enormously selfish, when you think about it.

Jeeperscreepers69 · 22/03/2021 18:02

@UserB yes your being stupid. Being a grown up is shite. Id rather be a 5 year old

MiriamMargo · 22/03/2021 18:04

Oh dear, lighten up, for bloke !

Chooseausernamenow · 22/03/2021 18:05

You are totally over reacting.

Bertiebiscuit · 22/03/2021 18:12

That really isn't a thoughtful message to give to a child, I agree - being an adult is difficult but rewarding - just as being a child is sometimes easy sometimes frustrating - what is his problem??? Maybe he needs to grow up 😂

maddiemookins16mum · 22/03/2021 18:42

You’re overthinking it, tomorrow she’ll want to be a puppy and wear her pyjamas to Nursery/the shop/the park.

Backtoschool101 · 22/03/2021 18:56

Hes right though.... its a good way to show your kids they need to work hard in school as much as they can at a chance of a not so rubbish adult hood if that makes sense. But it is still rubbish. Being a kid is much more fun

Gingercat86 · 22/03/2021 19:01

I always tell my kids being grown up is rubbish Grin mainly so that they enjoy being kids! I think you ABU

Pinkfluff76 · 22/03/2021 19:05

Oh goodness it’s a shame he said that. Maybe explain why... Dad was having a bad day and we have to do all the cooking and cleaning and don’t get to play with toys all day and kind of laugh. Good luck OP!!

Morgoth · 22/03/2021 19:11

It’s a throwaway funny comment. It’s not meant to be taken literally nor will your daughter take it literally.

Also, being a grown up is rubbish. Who wants to work 9-5 when you can nap, fingerpaint and eat Turkey dinosaurs?

CombatBarbie · 22/03/2021 19:30

Well he isn't lying is he. Youngsters are far too keen to grow up.... Most of us done it ourselves. His message is, enjoy your childhood. I think your reaction was a bit extreme.

tommyhoundmum · 22/03/2021 19:42

I much prefer being a grown up to being a kid. But that was in the fifties.

Blueink · 22/03/2021 19:58

YABU (and possibly taking it personally)

LibertyWX · 22/03/2021 20:02

Major over reaction.
