Shopping in pyjamas

I know, this has been done to death, but just went to the supermarket and saw a full family out shopping in their pyjamas. It's the first time I've actually seen a fully grown adult out in a full set of pj's (dressing gown, pyjama top, pyjama bottoms, fluffy socks and sliders). More curious to know exactly why people find this so unacceptable, because essentially they are just clothes. For me it is just slovenly and lazy. But maybe I'm being too judgemental. Opinions?

It takes me 1 minute to throw on jeans and a hoodie.
Honestly I think stores shouldn't allow people in in nightclothes. I think it's lazy, unseemly and sloppy.

SimplyMarvellousDarrrrrrling · 20/03/2021 20:15

@Onedropbeat

I’ve only ever seen it the once (I shop in Waitrose and happened to once need to go to Tesco’s in an emergency) The lady in question wore a fluffy robe with fluffy slippers and her legs were bare!

So I’ve no idea what was on underneath

How someone thinks that’s acceptable is beyond me .

The slippers being worn outside is just filthy

My God, that made me laugh 🤣😂🤣😂😂
GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 20/03/2021 20:16

To me it just looks utterly slob-like (if male) and slatternly - there’s a good old fashioned word! - if female.

Having said that, I know that when a dd was a student in the 90s, sharing an absolute tip of a house with 6 others, they used to go to the nearby petrol station in their pyjamas for the essentials of life, i.e. crisps, Coke, KitKats and fags.
I doubt any of them would do it once they were properly grown up. At least I hope not!

SpeckledyHen · 20/03/2021 20:19

Four years ago my son spent a day at a broad sheet newspaper office in London for his A level politics course . In the morning editorial meeting the media sub-editor arrive wearing pyjamas and slippers . Nobody batted an eyelid , so it must have been his normal attire!

pollylocketpickedapocket · 20/03/2021 20:20

@Junipersky

I'm guessing they were sponsored to do it for Comic Relief but didn't get the chance to do it yesterday due to work commitments. Someone round here did the same thing (I sponsored them).
My god, you’ve led a privileged (and sheltered) life.
Seapink2 · 20/03/2021 20:21

My immediate thought when I see this is when was the last time you washed your bits? You’re in the shop at 3pm clearly in last nights pyjamas. Stinking.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 20/03/2021 20:21

I genuinely couldn’t give a flying fuck what someone else wears to the supermarket and I cannot see why anyone else would or why it impacted them. The only reason is hygiene in terms of, I dunno, sewage worker not changing, nuclear waste contaminated outerwear etc. But that’s not what most people are doing is it? Personally I’m think I’m pretty clean and tidy, but there’s no question, my Jammies are washed more often than my jeans, so, ya know......

MrsTulipTattsyrup · 20/03/2021 20:21

I’m generally very non-judgmental, but this is one thing that turns my stomach. I can’t picture a scenario in which you’d get up, wash, dress in clean pyjamas and go out (why? Why would you? There are loads of comfy clothes available which aren’t pyjamas) so my assumption is always that this person has got out of the bed they’ve been thrashing around in, sweating, all night; not washed; is very unlikely to be wearing underwear under their flimsy pyjamas, and even if they are, they’re not clean; and then decided to go somewhere there’s food that other people have to buy.

I’ve stood behind someone in her pyjamas in a supermarket queue and let’s just say it was evident to my eyes and nose that all these things were true for her.

It shows a massive lack of respect for oneself and everyone else around you.

However, if you have got up, washed, put your knickers on, dressed in pyjamas and gone out to shop, it’s just attention seeking twattery, and doesn’t make you look alternative or A Bit Mad, you just look like a fool. Seriously, nobody’s impressed.

greendress789 · 20/03/2021 20:22

Gross! Just throw on a pair of tracksuit bottoms and a hoody.

Trampagne · 20/03/2021 20:22

Opinion, OP, is that I agree with you. They ought to get dressed if they're going out. Do they go to work in their nightwear, or send their children to school in pyjamas? If not, they do know that they are not suitable for outdoor use.

Pyjamas are the work of the Devil, in any case. Yuck. Give me a nice nightdress any day.

LadyLolaRuben · 20/03/2021 20:30

The idea is that the clothes you wear in the day are taken off at night as they have been out and about exposed to day to day germs etc. Those clothes go in the wash (generally speaking) and fresh clothes (PJs) are put on to sleep in.

lissie123 · 20/03/2021 20:31

Someone turned up for work in their pyjamas once. Only once because they were sacked. I think there were other transgressions too.

DuckonaBike · 20/03/2021 20:32

I agree, it’s disrespectful and I would be hoicking up my judgey pants if I saw it.

Fortunately I only shop in Waitrose or Sainsbury’s and I never do see it Wink

thriftyhen · 20/03/2021 20:33

Just hoping that the men weren't wearing traditional striped pyjamas with those open flappy flies! Blush

PomegranateQueen · 20/03/2021 20:34

I think it's the thought that they might not be wearing underwear

This! Probably unwashed bits too. It takes minutes to grab a quick body wash in the shower and throw on some clean activewear if you want to be comfy. It makes me a bit sad that they have given up on themselves, hygiene is such a basic thing.

littlepattilou · 20/03/2021 20:38

I think it's absolutely hideous. I do judge people who do it. And I don't apologise for it.

1forAll74 · 20/03/2021 20:40

I hate to see the pyjama people out shopping, it seems slovenly and lazy, but not sure why it should be,as clothes are clothes., and not much difference, to people wearing joggers and hoodies all the time..

I don't like walking to my shed in nightwear, so it must be me who is odd.

Thewiseoneincognito · 20/03/2021 20:45

It’s very rough to do that. Was it Asda by any chance?

lborgia · 20/03/2021 20:46

I once, ONCE, stayed in pjs to drop of child at school - not getting out of the car.

The car broke down.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 20/03/2021 20:47

It's repulsive. Why should I respect people who don't even respect themselves or others enough to get dressed to shop. This didn't used to happen because it's dickhead behaviour and they would have been pulled up on it.

Ironfloor269 · 20/03/2021 20:48

Gross. I instinctively hold my breath if I have to go past/stand next to anyone wearing pjs in a public space.

Tal45 · 20/03/2021 20:49

I'd just throw a big coat over the top, no one would notice I was wearing a onesie/pj's. I've been for a walk loads of times like that. I love, love, love pj's, dressing gown, slippers etc. When I see people dressed like it out I just feel jealous!

Shnuffles · 20/03/2021 20:50

It's judgmental, and I don't even care. Yes, I think it looks lazy and slovenly. I wouldn't dress like that in public unless I was on my last legs and physically couldn't manage to change clothes. Therefore, I think people who do it just for the heck of it are a little strange.

XenoBitch · 20/03/2021 20:50

I have seen this, but I don't give it any headspace. Except the one time I saw a chap go into Tesco with nothing but a dressing gown and slippers on. He had bare legs and chest. I hope his belt was knotted properly!

lborgia · 20/03/2021 20:51

@PomegranateQueen I’ve no idea why it made me smile, but “throw on some clean activewear” ... probably because I’m so old I’ve never heard “activewear” used outside advertising copy. But def agree, hate leaving the house all beddish.
