Shopping in pyjamas

I know, this has been done to death, but just went to the supermarket and saw a full family out shopping in their pyjamas. It's the first time I've actually seen a fully grown adult out in a full set of pj's (dressing gown, pyjama top, pyjama bottoms, fluffy socks and sliders). More curious to know exactly why people find this so unacceptable, because essentially they are just clothes. For me it is just slovenly and lazy. But maybe I'm being too judgemental. Opinions?

I think it's a very strange thing to do. I've never seen it, just heard about it. Is it just supermarkets that attract the pyjama brigade or do they wear them anywhere and everywhere? Parks, pubs, cinema?

SheikahSlate · 20/03/2021 20:55

In certain areas of my city (I won't say which one, but some of you might guess) you see young women out in pyjamas, but with a full face of make-up and hair rollers...Grin. Not so much during COVID, mind you, as it was usually on a Saturday, in advance of Saturday night.

Cookerhood · 20/03/2021 20:56

DS's ex used to pop to the corner shop in hers, but actually with shoes & a hoody checked PJs didn't look too bad. The only time I've ever seen a family out in PJs, dressing gowns & slippers was in Costco. I thought it was just plain weird. And, yes, I judged. Who needs to go to Costco in a pink fleece dressing gown with big white stars on it & fluffy slippers.

Staffy1 · 20/03/2021 20:56

@lborgia

I once, ONCE, stayed in pjs to drop of child at school - not getting out of the car.

The car broke down.

That would be just my luck!

I find it disgusting tbh especially in this pandemic where you're touching things and then will go home into bed with it. Careless, attention seeking, lazy and unhygienic. Pj's for me and family are only for bed time. We have been in loungewear more often since last year but not pj's. I wouldn't even go out with my loungewear let alone pj's. On another note, I have seen people (adults) in pj's on Easy Jet flights before, I can understand toddlers etc but adults, fuck me.

Fed up with seeing parents rock up to school in their PJs.
Why would you.
Lazy.

Likeandsubscribe · 20/03/2021 20:58

I just think it's so unnecessary. You can surely grab a three minute shower and throw on some yoga pants and trainers and a t-shirt and hoody if you really need to feel that comfy?

Also, I know this sounds old-fashioned but you don't just dress for yourself because actually its everyone else that can see you!

People touch stuff with their hands, not their PJs.
dreadfuldays · 20/03/2021 21:09

@XenoBitch don't you ever lean across the shelf's or brush past your trolley or shelfs when trying to move out the way or grab bits or when your putting your shopping on the check out belt where you're constantly leaning in and out and brushing on items or when carrying a basket it touches the side of your body and as the basket gets heavier it moves up and down across your body on both sides so you could balance. I certainly do, that's why I change as soon as I get home.

StrudelSoup · 20/03/2021 21:11

It's good to see the word "slovenly" making such a big comeback. I haven't heard it used so much since the 1990s, when my evil gran declared that the single mother who had dared to move in down the road looked like a "slovenly gypo". Nice to see her spirit alive and well on this thread.

GabsAlot · 20/03/2021 21:11

@Northofsomewhere

I work in a supermarket right now and keep seeing the same woman in always wearing PJ's, a fluffy dressing gown and slippers, it doesn't matter what time of day it is she's always in PJ's.

I just think it's odd for someone to wear sleepwear anywhere except your own property, maybe as far as the curb if you've forgotten it's bin day.

I also think people forget it's my place of work, I have to dress appropriately and I expect customers to dress the same (same with inappropriate summer clothes, I don't want to see topless hairy sweaty men either) when out and about. I wouldn't go to the dentist or hairdresser in my pjs so why do people go shopping wearing them.

i dont blame you but i tweeted tesco once out of curiosity they saifd there is no rule to say no wearing of pjamas as long as the person is wearing something

nomoreginforme · 20/03/2021 21:12

Who cares let people do what they want!

Shrivelled · 20/03/2021 21:13

Couldn’t get worked up about seeing people in PJs.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 20/03/2021 21:15

I think if it’s clean PJs it would hypothetically be ok. But then it’s not likely to be, is it? As why change into PJs when you could change into clothes.

It’s going to be the pyjamas they slept in, and sweated in, possibly not wearing underwear.

prowlingbrooms · 20/03/2021 21:15

I cleverly got around the problem (of having to change to go to the shops) by buying two versions of the same nighty that look like a dress (o checked with my kids, they say it can pass, in a housefrau shapeless sort of way). I also have a dressing gown and a coat of the same material and have on occasion picked up and worn one while intending to pick up the other. Good on them for not being arsed I say.

I can't remember the last time I brushed past anything in a supermarket. That one aspect of social distancing can stay long after the pandemic is over as far as I'm concerned.

GabsAlot · 20/03/2021 21:16

good point gertrude

SlipperTripper · 20/03/2021 21:17

I had to talk myself down from putting on heels to go to tescos the other day, so desperate am i to wear SOMETHING from the long forgotten reaches of my wardrobe that isn't just scruffs.

Why are they not embracing the fact that they're OUT OF THE CHUFFING HOUSE and celebrating it by wearing something with waistband?

^^
Saw this for the first time the other week! I hadn’t been sure it was real until now. Not at our school but the school down the road (Outer London so there’s practically one on every corner). Never seen it at our school, although it’s a state school. Someone would have words, or you would undoubtedly get hard stares!

reallyisthisallthereis · 20/03/2021 21:19

I once had to pick up my eldest DD from a bowling party in a shopping centre in my pyjamas. In my defence, I'd been helping out at my younger DD's Rainbow group and it was fancy dress so all wearing our onesies/ pJ's and hadn't factored in that I had to go straight away afterwards to the bowling centre and forgot to bring a change of clothes.. I did feel a total twat though but thankfully I wasn't wearing fluffy slippers.

katy1213 · 20/03/2021 21:19

I've honestly never seen this. Where on earth do you shop?

prowlingbrooms · 20/03/2021 21:19

I should add that I generally look a right mess and am probably single for a reason.

SheikahSlate · 20/03/2021 21:19

Once when I was in a bind I did go out with jeans and a coat over my pyjamas...but despite the urgent rush, still managed to shove a bra over my pyjama top Blush Grin. It was once.

SimplyMarvellousDarrrrrrling · 20/03/2021 21:20

@XenoBitch true, but to be fair @Dreadfuldays is on point with her/his comments, if they don't care about their appearance, who's to say that they value hygiene
It's skanky , there is no way of getting around it
