Shopping in pyjamas

radiateforme · 20/03/2021 18:11

I know, this has been done to death, but just went to the supermarket and saw a full family out shopping in their pyjamas. It's the first time I've actually seen a fully grown adult out in a full set of pj's (dressing gown, pyjama top, pyjama bottoms, fluffy socks and sliders). More curious to know exactly why people find this so unacceptable, because essentially they are just clothes. For me it is just slovenly and lazy. But maybe I'm being too judgemental. Opinions?

@Reinventinganna

I couldn’t even if I tried!

I work in a supermarket right now and keep seeing the same woman in always wearing PJ's, a fluffy dressing gown and slippers, it doesn't matter what time of day it is she's always in PJ's.

I just think it's odd for someone to wear sleepwear anywhere except your own property, maybe as far as the curb if you've forgotten it's bin day.

I also think people forget it's my place of work, I have to dress appropriately and I expect customers to dress the same (same with inappropriate summer clothes, I don't want to see topless hairy sweaty men either) when out and about. I wouldn't go to the dentist or hairdresser in my pjs so why do people go shopping wearing them.

UrAWizHarry · 20/03/2021 19:22

I wouldn't do it, but being a judgemental arsehole regarding something which doesn't impact your life at all is far worse.

flossletsfloss · 20/03/2021 19:25

I've never seen it but yes I would definitely judge. I'd think they were lazy. However, who cares what I think!

We’re all judgemental arseholes. You’re being a judgemental arsehole about me being a judgemental arsehole.
UrAWizHarry · 20/03/2021 19:26

Nope. Just stating a fact.

Troublewaters2021 · 20/03/2021 19:29

I am far for lazy but do it. You can’t judge everyone as lazy you have no idea why they are in pyjamas etc
I should add I don’t wear a dressing gown. Do take the dog to the park in a oodie at night though

LunaHeather · 20/03/2021 19:30

@Frogartist

Because it makes your pyjamas dirty. I like my bed to stay clean.
I know someone who does this and said it's a thing to have bed pyjamas and going out pyjamas.

The last time I was in Oasis, I thought the staff were in pyjamas and my friend thought it was loungewear.

It’s not, though, is it? It’s something you have decided is a fact, which isn’t the same thing at all.
Aroundtheworldin80moves · 20/03/2021 19:31

Whole family, including kids? I might guess at the 'Yes Day' craze. (Parents do what the children tell them for the day). Overall, relatively harmless

RaindropsSplashRainbows · 20/03/2021 19:31

@Armi 😂 modern life!

pollylocketpickedapocket · 20/03/2021 19:32

@PandaFluff

Maybe their house burnt down and that's all they have
Ok!
Homeschoolsoutforsummer · 20/03/2021 19:32

I must admit I do judge and think it looks slovenly and lazy. There’s nothing wrong with leggings and a baggy jumper and I often wear loungewear to the local shop but actual matching PJs, dressing gown and slippers?! Awful.

Perlea · 20/03/2021 19:33

While I don't think it's a huge deal I wouldn't do it, to me it says less about being a free spirit and more about not having a basic respect for yourself.

StoneofDestiny · 20/03/2021 19:33

Slovenly, unhygienic, bad example to their children, unnecessary attention seeking and just not appropriate wear from a shopping trip. Bedclothes are for bed (thank goodness for school uniforms!)

Knitterbabe · 20/03/2021 19:34

Round here is mainly travellers who are out in pjs. The shop in our nearby village does not serve people in pyjamas.

mumwon · 20/03/2021 19:34

tsk! WHOLE family (forgets about pjs) All out together shopping at supermarket!!! (shocked!) Grin

Makingnumber2 · 20/03/2021 19:34

Unless it was a fancy dress/charity thing I harshly judge grown adults who go round public places in pyjamas. It's lazy, slobby and disgusting. I say this as someone who considers themselves quite lazy but even I would never dream of going to the supermarket in PJs.

stunnningandbrave · 20/03/2021 19:34

Textbook mumsnet!

Ellmau · 20/03/2021 19:35

I think it's the thought that they might not be wearing underwear.

pollylocketpickedapocket · 20/03/2021 19:35

Everyday on the school run, I see a lady picking her kid up from nursery, about 3yo, with a tiny baby in a carrier. She’s in pjs and a dressing gown, always smoking too.
I go between judging and thinking her mh must be shit, what on earth must the nursery staff think?
It’s been absolutely freezing at times.

user143677433 · 20/03/2021 19:36

It’s interesting isn’t it? There are clearly grey areas.

I have some gorgeous satin evening trousers that my husband swears look like PJs.

I have also seen plenty of “loungewear” which is clearly meant to be multipurpose.

And I sew, so if I choose to make some wide legged cotton drawstring trousers then it’s clearly up to me whether I am making them for day or night wear.

pollylocketpickedapocket · 20/03/2021 19:36

@LunaNorth

It’s attention seeking.

Just put your clothes on to go to the shop, ffs. You’re not a free spirit just because we can all see you’re too special to get dressed.

Special??? Bone idle.

Northernsoullover · 20/03/2021 19:40
