Shopping in pyjamas

I know, this has been done to death, but just went to the supermarket and saw a full family out shopping in their pyjamas. It's the first time I've actually seen a fully grown adult out in a full set of pj's (dressing gown, pyjama top, pyjama bottoms, fluffy socks and sliders). More curious to know exactly why people find this so unacceptable, because essentially they are just clothes. For me it is just slovenly and lazy. But maybe I'm being too judgemental. Opinions?

What I always wonder what the process is here. Do they get out of bed and stay in the pyjamas they've worn all night, then get back into bed wearing them that night? Do they wake up and shower, put underwear on, then put clean pyjamas on? In that case, why not just put clothes on?
I think you've lost all self respect when you think it's ok to go out in your pyjamas.

Knitterbabe · 20/03/2021 19:53

@ilovesooty
Seriously mainly travellers, or seriously not served in shop?
Either way, yes seriously!

Biscuit9224 · 20/03/2021 19:54

You don’t see it often where I live. But yes I would be annoyed too.

On one occasion I did see a lady in her pjs picking stuff from Argos . It was around 4pm so I assume she’s been in it all day! She just loooked like she needed a good scrub too / couldn’t help but realise how dirty she looked standing behind her in the queue.

I think I would rather see someone in their pjs in the evening because there’s a chance they’ve out clean pjs on for the evening and had to pop out. In the mornings and daytime is more gross as they have probably slept in them and gone out.

TwoHundredThousandTimes · 20/03/2021 19:54

I judge also.

Our lcoal Tesco has a sign on the front saying that people cannot come in in pyjamas and must not have bare feet.

I do wonder at how little self respect someone must have to go out like that tbh.

Ibleedibreedibreaatfeed · 20/03/2021 19:55

What are oodies like? They always seem so overpriced to me. Have yet to meet anyone who wears one.

unchienandalusia · 20/03/2021 19:56

Standards are important.

Pyjamas are for bedtime.

Tangogolf55 · 20/03/2021 19:57

So skanky.

It is only travellers that wear their pyjamas out around here too. I don't think any local shops have banned people for wearing them though. I'm in Ireland though so it is different I suppose.

CosyAcorn · 20/03/2021 19:58

I've occasionally gone out to the shops with a pyjama top on, but that is with a coat on top.

And I've seen people out with trousers that looked suspiciously like pyjamas but because they were also wearing coat and trainers it was hard to tell.

Cant imagine going out in dressing gown and slippers. My guess would be it's a Red Nose Day thing.

Branleuse · 20/03/2021 19:58

@PandaFluff

Maybe their house burnt down and that's all they have
Exactly!! All these people on here didnt even consider that, did they? NO. Cos they only think about themselves!
ktp100 · 20/03/2021 19:59

It's just the height of chav, really.

So embarrassing.

WestendVBroadway · 20/03/2021 19:59

During the last lockdown period when I was WFH, I lived in jogging bottoms and sweatshirt (unless I was on Zoom/Teams when I put on a decent top). If I had to pop to shops I would get changed as even that seemed inappropriate for public viewing. The furthest I would go in my PJs is to front gate to put out bins. I normally wouldn't judge people on their appearance, but I do think wearing nightwear out is totally unnecessary.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 20/03/2021 20:01

see it occasionally here, not often.
I felt really slovenly nipping out to the supermarket in leggings that I normally only wear at home earlier in the week Hmm.

SimplyMarvellousDarrrrrrling · 20/03/2021 20:02

I think it shows a total lack of respect for the people who work and shop there
They just make themselves look rank

SphJane · 20/03/2021 20:03

It doesn’t bother me, I’ve seen me pick my OH up from the clubhouse in my PJ bottoms if it’s dark and I’m only going to be in the car.

I’ve been in shops many times where someone will be in with bright PJs on and while I don’t stare, it’s hard not to look sometimes.

Onedropbeat · 20/03/2021 20:05

I’ve only ever seen it the once (I shop in Waitrose and happened to once need to go to Tesco’s in an emergency)
The lady in question wore a fluffy robe with fluffy slippers and her legs were bare!

So I’ve no idea what was on underneath

How someone thinks that’s acceptable is beyond me .

The slippers being worn outside is just filthy

Sayamino · 20/03/2021 20:07

People who wear pyjamas to the shops are really irritating. They think they’re radical & cool but actually they just look like lazy slobs. FFS just put normal clothes on. It’s the attention-seeking motivation behind it that gets up my nose

Hallyup5 · 20/03/2021 20:08

Definitely unacceptable. I can't even stand being in PJs during the day at home so to go out in them is lower than low.

gingganggooleywotsit · 20/03/2021 20:09

I would judge! I’d think they must all stink

Hoppinggreen · 20/03/2021 20:09

I wouldn’t do it and I might silently judge anyone who did
However, it might well not be “gross” as I don’t sleep in my PJs, I sleep naked and put them on when I get up to Potter around the house

Junipersky · 20/03/2021 20:09

I'm guessing they were sponsored to do it for Comic Relief but didn't get the chance to do it yesterday due to work commitments.
Someone round here did the same thing (I sponsored them).

Stellaris22 · 20/03/2021 20:10

I work in a local shop in a student area, fairly common at 9am on a Sunday. Someone came in wearing one of those oodies once.

TheFormidableMrsC · 20/03/2021 20:11

I think it's ridiculous and it makes you look stupid. There was a parent at school who did this every morning. Headmistress had a word in the end. My kids would be horrified if I did that. How hard is it to pull on a pair of leggings and tee under a coat.

SweetPetrichor · 20/03/2021 20:13

It’s a bit of a class thing from what I have observed. It’s the sort of thing I’ve seen in cheaper places. Honestly, I don’t really care - I’d rather see pjs than leggings-as-trousers!
I am a pj lover. I wear pjs all the time at home, I only get dressed to leave the house, but I DO get dressed to leave the house and that is crucial!

thecatandthevicar · 20/03/2021 20:14

@Gilead

Maybe it was a comic relief thing?
Let's hope so.
