AIBU to cringe at the term plus size?

Surely large/larger or big/bigger sounds better?

So I don’t see the point of shaming them.

no one is shaming.

But we are now in situations where people convinced themselves that a size 14/16 is "healthy" and that because most of their friends are that size, it's absolutely fine.

It's very wrong.

You're wrong to think size 14/16 women can't be healthy. Completely wrong.
SchrodingersImmigrant · 18/03/2021 17:39

14 is absolutely ok for average height person. I am 169-170. My chest were 96cm+, my waist was 65cm. At that time I wore 14 Because I quite like my boobs in my clothes. I did sometimes fit 12 top depending on cut.

Duggeehugs82 · 18/03/2021 17:39

@thecatandthevicar

This is a bit harsh to use clothes to criticize people’s weight

It's not a criticism, it's a fact.

If someone is naturally slim and petite, it's very rude to pretend there is any kind of eating disorder there.

When someone is overweight, they eat too much (apart from the minute amount of people ballooning because of medication. It does happen, but it's usually just an excuse).

It's weird that it's impossible to be factual about things.
No one is accused of being a "shamer" for pointing out that it's unhealthy to be a smoker, or it's unhealthy to be an alcoholic.

My problem with this is if someone is naturally slim i mean like size 0-6 they dont typically should feel shame Also if someone who is has bulimia/ anorexia and they are recovering . They are not shamed or guilted into what they have done to their body. But if someone who has binge eating disorder who is overweight, shaming and guilting them seems to be a national past time, its seen so normal and natural to just tell them they need to go on a diet when that is actually not what they need. Diet culture is so ingrained into our lifes. Like all the people on here saying basically we are a strain on the nhs. No one would dream of saying that to the other eating disorders why is it ok for overweight , its crazy to me
LApprentiSorcier · 18/03/2021 17:42

@Blueberries0112

Yes, I wear wide shoes myself , but that’s how they size them in the plus size section
The width of your foot has nothing to do with your weight. My husband is underweight with a BMI of 15 and he has very wide feet - it's bone structure, not fat.

However, plus sized shops have wider ankle and calf fittings for boots, which is often needed if you are overweight.

StCharlotte · 18/03/2021 17:48

@MidsummersNightie

When I was a child 40 years ago it used to be called The Outsize Department.
Exactly. Evans was then called "Evans Outsize" and that was truly horrible.

I'll take "plus size" for clothes. "Curve" is a bit coy.

Or would the OP prefer an "Obese range" in M&S?

KatherineJaneway · 18/03/2021 17:48

I was comfortably within my healthy weight range when I was size 14.

Me too. BMI of 21.8. I have broad shoulders and wide hips.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 18/03/2021 17:51

I quite like the "Outsize" and I don't know why😂 Maybe a second language thing

Duggeehugs82 · 18/03/2021 17:53

I totally get that not all overweight people have an eating disorder but u dont know peoples life so wouldnt be better to just get that maybe being overweigh is a complicated thing and surely if diets worked there wouldnt be such a high percentage that keep going on them. They would work and then there wouldnt be so many overweight people in the world

Especially alcoholics and drug users, they make me furious, a burden to society.
(My ex next door neighbour used to be an alcoholic and mix pills. Ended up a complete nut job. A complete nightmare and stain on society)

Im a big fatty but at least I'm not the sort of twat who would feel it's ok to say this about someone else.

Perhaps if the NHS put any funding at all into mental health provision, there wouldn't be so many fatties, alcoholics and drug addicts to put pressure on the NHS.

But the fact you call him a nutjob and a stain on society makes me think you don't have that much sympathy for those who have mental health problems.

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 18/03/2021 18:00

You know that dress sizes are completely arbitrary, decided on by clothes retailers and vary wildly between shops? When i was a size 12 pretty much everywhere, i didn't fit into a size 16 in next, it was far too small. It doesn't mean the problem was my body. The problem was with whatever label had been attached to those clothes.

Blueberries0112 · 18/03/2021 18:02

My aunt used to be normal all her life but she also smoked all her life too. Then in her 50’s she gained weight rapidly because she decided to quit smoking. I think her old habit made her turn to snacking

I used to have sympathy, but after living next to a person like this it really opened my eyes and made me change my mind completely.

He used to have a great job, wife and kids. He threw it all away for booze and pills.

He then become an absolute animal. He used to scream, shout, break things, and threaten to kill people. He actually made my property unsellable, until he was no longer around.

How can you expect me to be okay with living next to someone like this...?

I'm commenting on your use of the phrase nut job and saying he's a stain on society.

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 18/03/2021 18:14

He threw it all away for booze and pills.

I'm sure one day he woke up and thought, you know what, i fancy being an alcoholic and drug addict.

Or maybe he turned to those things to cope with something that happened to him and it spiralled out of control.

That's what happened to me, except comfort eating is my coping mechanism. I went from a size 12 to a size 20. I'm a nut job too, if by nut job you mean someone with a mental health problem. So i also had anti depressants helping to speed up my weight gain. I'm sure people look at me and think "she should go on a diet, she's really fat, doesn't she know she's a drain on the nhs". But you know what? It was the NHS that caused my mental health issues so they can damn well deal with the consequences.

Id rather be a fat nut job than a judgmental prick who actually thinks the terminology used to sell clothes for fat people is any of their business.

How did the NHS cause your mental health issues, Pam?
That’s quite a statement.

VeganCow · 18/03/2021 18:25

I get you. Why does it have to be anything. Why not just one of the sizes.

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 18/03/2021 18:27

Traumatic birth due to by negligence from medical staff leading to PTSD, anxiety and depression.

Duggeehugs82 · 18/03/2021 18:27

I guess u have the drug addicts and alcoholics at the bottom of the shaming pile and then up from them the overweight people then above them maybe the sex addicts , then maybe above them u have the other eating disorders maybe ,or i mean we could learn the damage it does and just not shame any of them and not have a sliding scale of shame and disgust 🤔

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 18/03/2021 18:29

That would be nice wouldn't it! Confused

Daisychainsandglitter · 18/03/2021 18:33

I'm a size 18 and it's bad enough having to buy plus size clothes let alone going into a shop where they're titled large. You may as well stick a sign above those racks of clothes saying fat.
To be referred to as large etc also doesn't do anything for anyone's self confidence.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 18/03/2021 18:33

As I’ve seen recently when ordering for a Gdd, M&S do ‘plus size’ girls’ school summer dresses.

Not sure what else they’re supposed to call them - Fat Girls’ Dresses?

A pity IMO that such things are needed at all.
