AIBU to cringe at the term plus size?

Surely large/larger or big/bigger sounds better?

if it was as simple as 'just eat less' no one would be overweight.
It actually is that simple. It's not easy , and there are myriad reasons why people find it difficult to impossible, but it is actually that simple.

YABU.

'Plus size' sounds better than 'big' or 'bigger' or even worse 'BIGGEST!'

However, what makes me cringe is the people who consider someone a 'plus size' when they're a size 14![/quote]
Usually (not always), someone size 14 tends to be chubby / not athletic or toned.

Absolute utter rot.

Simple and easy are often used synonymously. In any case, simplicity is little help if the goal is still almost impossible for most people to achieve long-term.

QueenPaw · 18/03/2021 16:11

Not toned doesn't = plus size though
You can be a size 6/8/10 and not athletic or toned or a size 14 and athletic as anything

Blueberries0112 · 18/03/2021 16:12

Is there a minus size? Personally, I think there is a plus size section because they don’t feel like making good clothes for anyone above size 18 (for Americans) so they tell them go to the plus size section

ShadierThanaPalmTree · 18/03/2021 16:18

Large makes me think tall or broad, plus size is more obvious.

But they are.

It's not doing anyone any favour at all to pretend a size 14 is not generally overweight.

Your size 14 today is the equivalent of an 18-20 before. How is that not overweight? Sorry, plus size...

Blueberries0112 · 18/03/2021 16:27

Maybe we should do a minus size too remind people they have a eating disorder too.
This is a bit harsh to use clothes to criticize people’s weight

It's not a criticism, it's a fact.

If someone is naturally slim and petite, it's very rude to pretend there is any kind of eating disorder there.

When someone is overweight, they eat too much (apart from the minute amount of people ballooning because of medication. It does happen, but it's usually just an excuse).

It's weird that it's impossible to be factual about things.
No one is accused of being a "shamer" for pointing out that it's unhealthy to be a smoker, or it's unhealthy to be an alcoholic.

thecatandthevicar · 18/03/2021 16:32

It's rude and offensive to pretend that smaller people have an eating disorder.

There are such things are "petite" and "tall" sizes already....

Eating disorder or not, you are fat because you eat too much.

Blueberries0112 · 18/03/2021 16:34

You can’t compare it to smoking and alcohol. People don’t need it to survive. And most people who quit will quit cold turkey . You can’t do that with food.

Blueberries0112 · 18/03/2021 16:36

That’s my point, it’s rude and mean to use a +- on clothes when people just want to look their best

There are exceptions...which i why i said not always.
My frame is large, so even though im toned and athletic, im not slim/skinny and never physically will be. E.g. look at Gina Carano as an example of this. She is in great shape, but probably a 14.

However, she and most people like her are the minority. Most people her dress size wont be in as great a shape

you don't need to over-eat to survive, you can remove snacks and junk food and excessive amounts by going cold turkey too.

Does anyone remember 'Evans the outsize house'? That was much worse.

This place has been mentioned throughout the thread. I remember DM being embarrassed she had to go there. Looking back on pictures of her from then, she doesn't even look that big.
I guess that's how much standards and body shapes have changed - we've become far more accustomed to seeing plus size bodies now.

Blueberries0112 · 18/03/2021 17:01

It doesn’t seem to be working . Plus sized people are still wearing plus size crappy clothing. So I don’t see the point of shaming them. Beside when I was a teen, I was a size 10 in US , I didn’t need a plus size to know i am a bit big for my age. Confidence people are more likely to lose weight and stay healthy, not people who feel crappy about themselves

SchrodingersImmigrant · 18/03/2021 17:08

I was comfortably within my healthy weight range when I was size 14.
I don't think I fit my chest into anything below 12 since I was 16...

Blueberries0112 · 18/03/2021 17:16

Anyway, here they use “w” as in wide

SchrodingersImmigrant · 18/03/2021 17:22

Isn't that for shoes?

Blueberries0112 · 18/03/2021 17:29

Yes, I wear wide shoes myself , but that’s how they size them in the plus size section

SchrodingersImmigrant · 18/03/2021 17:31

They should size them like that everywhere. Can't wear half a trainers!

Tbf, my feet did get even wider after I became morbidly obese. Feet get fat. Who knew. I didn't.

42, flat and wide as fuck. So ladylike feet.😂

Blueberries0112 · 18/03/2021 17:32

Also, men in the US don’t seem to have plus size clothing . It’s all number and length size (my husband is big and tall but he is interested in losing weight with or without clothes reminding him)

Yet they are more likely to have heart disease and die sooner than women.
