AIBU to cringe at the term plus size?

Surely large/larger or big/bigger sounds better?

@LApprentiSorcier

In my anecdotal experience, feet have definitely got larger. I don't know any women over the age of 70 with larger than a size 4 foot. My mum is a small size 3. I'm a size 6.
My mother was a size 3. I'm a size 8! I had bigger feet at the age of 9.

@SchrodingersImmigrant

14 is absolutely ok for average height person. I am 169-170. My chest were 96cm+, my waist was 65cm. At that time I wore 14 Because I quite like my boobs in my clothes. I did sometimes fit 12 top depending on cut.
for 169-170, your weight should be what? 55kg, 60 at a push if you are very muscly? (and I am generous)

Is a size 14 really the best size for a 170/ 55kg body?

thecatandthevicar · 19/03/2021 10:30

@NewUser123456789

I would favour using sea creatures as a sizing guide. After the normal human sizes it should go Seal -> Walrus -> Whale -> Kraken.
😂

I go shopping to any store that does that!

No 52.8kg - 71.4kg

PussGirl · 19/03/2021 10:39

I'm sure people's frames are getting taller and broader, but a big person does not have to be fat.

The fatness of people is a real problem.

I struggle these days to find clothing with a waist that fits as the manufacturers know most women are now fatter in that area and they want to sell their clothes.

When I was young in the 80s there was no comfort to be had from leggings, lycra, low rise etc - if you put on weight your clothes were uncomfortable.

minchinfin · 19/03/2021 10:39

I this we need an opposite of petite (which is also a naff word) and then stick to sizes - like the do with trouser lengths.

So
8, 10, 12,14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24 small frame - i.e small tits
8, 10, 12,14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24 average frame - i.e medium tits
8, 10, 12,14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24 large frame - i.e large tits

I am a size 12 bottoms but 14/16 top due to annoying large chest and broader back and shoulders. I often have to buy 14 plus size tops to accommodate the chest and then have to take up sleeves etc - it's annoying.

If you want to really feel massive or be incentivised to go on a diet - try and buy a t shirt or a swimming costume of Amazon. Most of the stuff comes for Asia so anything larger than a 12 in considered enormous and often comes in encouraging sizes like 3XL.

Stinkywizzleteets · 19/03/2021 11:16

I have ginormous tits, a wee waist and huge hips and thighs. Nothing fits me. My BMI says obese but my waist to hips ratio (allegedly a better indicator for disease) is at the lower end.

I don’t think the problem is sizing per se but modelling. Clothes seem designed for planks of wood of varying sizes not taking into account curves. Women’s xl (16/18) outdoor jackets won’t zip up over my boobs and if I go much bigger to fit I have a huge hulahoop effect at the bottom of my jacket

My issue is that 16/18 is no longer extra large, it’s fairly average to just above average.

Regardless of what fitness gurus and outdated BMI calculators say we need to wear clothes- I’m happy to parade around naked and let
My big wobbly thighs and arse get some daylight because nothing fits right...

71.4kg for 170cm is overweight!

I barely reached that when I was 9 months pregnant, and I was HUGE. I would have scared off a Kraken 😂

It's not healthy at all. Unless you really are extremely muscly, but you'd know if you were. The figures of your height and weight really should not match, it's ridiculously unhealthy.

Blueberries0112 · 19/03/2021 11:24

I will like to see one study that shows women seeing the term Plus size or wide side on their clothes works and it helped them lose weight

Blueberries0112 · 19/03/2021 11:28

Would

Size (sorry I type faster than my brain can think)

SchrodingersImmigrant · 19/03/2021 11:38

71.4kg for 170cm is overweight!

It is absolute top range for that height.
60 is ideal, not "at a push". I was generally 60-65 size 12-14.

No, I wasn't overweight, no being above 60 when 170cm is not "unhealthy" as long as you don't tent to go over 70.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 19/03/2021 11:38

Tend ffs!

LApprentiSorcier · 19/03/2021 12:19

In my experience British clothes are designed to fit and flatter the 'pear shape' - small waist and boobs, bigger hips and bum.

I'm the opposite - big waist and boobs, narrow hips, small, flat bum. Even with clothes that fit well, it's a very difficult shape to flatter if you are overweight - no use emphasising your narrow hips because that only makes you look more top-heavy. I find straight cut dresses the most flattering.

Just a couple of bonuses to this body type - you look really slim from behind Grin. And you never have difficulty with chairs - have seen mortifying instances of pear-shaped women getting stuck in tub-style chairs.

minchinfin · 19/03/2021 15:01

hahahaha this is exactly me and you're so right about the chairs! I can even fit in the one at primary school parents evenings! :)

But I can barely get a jacket that fits me that I can do up over the chest - have to go way larger and then take up the sleeves and pin in the shoulder.

KatherineJaneway · 20/03/2021 06:54

I find the opposite. Clothes rarely taper in at the waist.

hardboiledeggs · 20/03/2021 08:38

Plus size seems less judgy than the options you have given.

size 12 - 14 is not ideal at all Confused Size 14 of today was a plus size not that long ago!

60 kg for a size 170 is far too big! We have completely lost touch with what is healthy or not. Get out of the UK and people are horrified by how big we are.

The UK sizes are very generous, which doesn't help.

Do you realise how unhealthy that attitude is? By suddenly deciding that a size 14 is optimal, it means a size 16 is well, just a notch above, need to be a bit careful, and you don't start to accept you are possibly overweight until you reach 18/20!

it's insane.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 20/03/2021 09:59

Oh stop it. 60kg for 170cm is absolutely ideal weight.

Show me any supporting material that it's too big.

What is an unhealthy attitude is to tell people that 60kg is " far too big" for 170cm when it is BMI 20.

Are you confusing some measures here or something?

SchrodingersImmigrant · 20/03/2021 10:03

5.7 ft - 9.44 stone
170cm - 60kg

thecatandthevicar · 20/03/2021 11:13

Oh stop it. 60kg for 170cm is absolutely ideal weight.

Confused

Even for a middle age woman, it really isn't.
If my daughter was 60kg, she would be severely overweight.

You do realise the top weight of a range is not the ideal , don't you?

No wonder the UK is a nation of overweight people when they convince themselves they are "slim and healthy" when they really aren't. What do you need to feel fat!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 20/03/2021 11:14

Are you telling me with a straight face that 9.4 stone is max weight for 5.7 foot tall woman?

LunaNorth · 20/03/2021 11:26

11st 5 is the top weight for a 5.7 woman.

I know, because I’m 11st 8 and have lost 17lbs to get here! That last 3lb is proving very stubborn!

thecatandthevicar · 20/03/2021 11:55

@SchrodingersImmigrant

I am telling you that anyone I know with that height would be fat if they reach that weight, unless we are talking about the skinny but muscly ones.

My daughter is around that height, as she is younger, she would be severely overweight at 9.4 stones.

She does competitions based on weight. They have a very healthy but realistic view of what is and what is not acceptable.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 20/03/2021 11:58

Honestly, O think you have miscalculated somewhere because telling people that at 5.7 and 9.4 stone they would be fat is dangerous, wrong and frankly a sign of very distorted weight view. Yours.

I will go with what doctors say.

thecatandthevicar · 20/03/2021 12:02

And that's how people convince themselves that a size 14 is slim and healthy.

My own doctor advocate being healthy and slim, not trying to get as fat as you can without going into the "severe overweight" category.
But then it's a doctor who is very against women "eating for 2" when they are 3 weeks pregnant - I stick with that too.
