AIBU to cringe at the term plus size?

Surely large/larger or big/bigger sounds better?

@Daisychainsandglitter

I'm a size 18 and it's bad enough having to buy plus size clothes let alone going into a shop where they're titled large. You may as well stick a sign above those racks of clothes saying fat. To be referred to as large etc also doesn't do anything for anyone's self confidence.
You can't really call ot small and you have to have SOME indicators of aize. We can't just do away with sizing to spare feelings.

@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER

As I’ve seen recently when ordering for a Gdd, M&S do ‘plus size’ girls’ school summer dresses. Not sure what else they’re supposed to call them - Fat Girls’ Dresses? A pity IMO that such things are needed at all.
They could just do what they do with the other dresses and put the measurements on them? They don’t need any other labelling.

Another large "nut job" checking in. Highly academic but traumatic abusive childhood has led to maladaptive coping mechanisms as an adult. That plus chronic health conditions.

It is truly horrible to see the vulnerable in our society treated so badly. They are often the people with abusive childhoods or without resources to draw on to cope. Noone that is happy and settled and comfortable wakes up and thinks they want to be an alcoholic/addict/anorexic/morbidly obese/ suicidal etc. Have some compassion.

Kicking people when they are down doesn't work. Supportive environments does. Morbidly obese people will be struggling enough - they just want to buy clothes without being made to feel even worse.

I'm amazed people really lack empathy this much.

WorraLiberty · 18/03/2021 19:14

I'm amazed people really lack empathy this much.

You should see the average thread on here about smokers, that'll really amaze you.

'Disgusting, stupid, thick, smelly' etc...

No mention of possible traumatic childhoods/depression/anxiety/abuse or any of the other empathetic reasons offered up as to why many people are overweight.

Even odder that a few MNetters regularly jump on smoking threads to shame the nicotine addicts, while calling for empathy and understanding towards food addicts.

But that's MN for you I guess.

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 18/03/2021 19:31

There's nothing stopping you doing that.

Of course there isn't, which is why I often do Confused

I'm unsure what that has to do with my point that a lot of people call for empathy towards overweight people and their food addictions, while happily behaving the opposite way towards others and their addictions.

What a prize you are op. Is it windy up there on your high horse?

MishaHarrow · 18/03/2021 21:47

@ShesMadeATwatOfMePam

How can you expect me to be okay with living next to someone like this...?

I'm commenting on your use of the phrase nut job and saying he's a stain on society.

This particular man absolutely was. If you ever met him, you would say the same. (I am not talking about anyone else)

He made every neighbours life absolute hell. We were the victims of his aggression and violence. I told you he used to scream, break things, threaten to kill people (including me). How dare you expect me to think a man like that is okay? Or that I cannot judge him?

You should get off your hypocritical high horse. If you had to suffer living next door to such a "man", you wouldnt be sorry naively charitable.

@SavingsQuestions

I have no issues with people with MH issues.

Cant you and others see from my post that I am talking about 1 particular dangerous and vile individual?

He put my and other neighbours life through hell. And what was worse, was that I couldn't sell and move a2ay from him, as I would be legally obligated to inform the new buyer and/or could be taken to court by the new buyer if I witheld the information regarding his screaming, breaking things and acting completely out of it.

Not every drugs and alcoholic are abusers. Not some of them that I know. Some of them truly can’t cope with life.

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 18/03/2021 23:09

Cool stories about you and this guy. I don't even know why you're going on about him.

HeadLikeAFuckinOrange · 19/03/2021 01:28

I'm confused by the leap from how shops should approach labelling clothes in general, to a nuisance man who has mental illness and substance abuse issues, and the trouble he causes Confused

Are you okay, OP?

CartBfree · 19/03/2021 01:36

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit

As an 18/20

I don't know why it isn't just left as Size. Why make a fucking point of YOU'RE LARGER to people just buying clothes. Newsflash Clothes Brands : We Know

I think its the opposite.

They're making it clear that they do those larger sizes that people may be struggling to find.

starfish88 · 19/03/2021 02:57

To all of the people saying that a vintage large is now a small, it's true but the average woman today is also 3 inches taller than the 1960s so it's hard to compare like for like. The fact that the average shoe size has also increased from a 3 to a 6 in the same time suggests it isn't all to do with weight.

surely the reason is that what fits/suits a size 8 doesn't automatically work by scaling it up to a size 28. I assume that plus size is mainly clothes designed for larger/fatter women.
At 16/18, I generally get clothes that are not from a plus size range, although some are.
At least there's a good range of larger sizes available these days, whatever they're called - not that long ago your only options were shapeless baggy crimplene from Evans, or make your own.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 19/03/2021 05:48

starfish - Shoes!!! if I was the right height for my size 8 feet, I wouldn't be overweight Grin
Again, size 8 regularly available - a couple of decades ago virtually impossible to find, everything stopped at size 7.

LApprentiSorcier · 19/03/2021 07:18

@Blueberries0112

My aunt used to be normal all her life but she also smoked all her life too. Then in her 50’s she gained weight rapidly because she decided to quit smoking. I think her old habit made her turn to snacking
Yes - a cigarette can be an alternative to a snack as nicotine is an appetite suppressant. The toxins in cigarettes also force your body to burn more calories processing them (not vast amounts but it would add up over years).

It's generally believed that the risks of smoking vastly outweigh the risks of being obese, though and a smoking habit is a lot more expensive than a snacking habit. You could get two fast food type meals for the cost of 20 cigarettes these days.

Couple of decades?😂 Much much closer, than that. I am 8 or 9 depending on shoe, more often 9 especially now. I still can't always find the shoes without ordering in🙄 Many don't even make them
SchrodingersImmigrant · 19/03/2021 07:52

There are studies on nicotine/insuline relationship and suggestions that stopping smoking makes chances of diabetes higher for some time

LApprentiSorcier · 19/03/2021 07:54

In my anecdotal experience, feet have definitely got larger. I don't know any women over the age of 70 with larger than a size 4 foot. My mum is a small size 3. I'm a size 6.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 19/03/2021 07:55

@LApprentiSorcier we get larger with every generation from what I read.
Me and my monster feet are my family's example😂

I would favour using sea creatures as a sizing guide. After the normal human sizes it should go Seal -> Walrus -> Whale -> Kraken.

LunaNorth · 19/03/2021 08:08

Seals are a bit fat though. Definitely bigger than they used to be.

I think we should start with a nice elegant transparent seahorse.

The problem with your scale is no motivation to lose because wtf wouldn't want to be Kraken😂
