AIBU to cringe at the term plus size?

Surely large/larger or big/bigger sounds better?

I can’t even work out the purpose of this thread... you’re not even bigger... why do you care?
( and as an aside why is there even a need for specialist plus size clothing stores?.... why don’t the “normal” clothes shops just make bigger sizes?)

LyndzB · 17/03/2021 18:54

I personally like the term 'proper chunky' for myself. Would absolutely buy from the 'proper chunky range'

SchrodingersImmigrant · 17/03/2021 18:55

Because most of the time cut that fits well on 10 wouldn't fit equally well on 22. Different pattern/cut is used to fit better.

Duggeehugs82 · 17/03/2021 18:55

I find the "i was once overweight and now im normal " somehow explaining overweight as abnormal is quite insulting.

It is abnormal for someone who was overweight only for short time. It is not their normal...

It is abnormal for someone who is used to being slimmer
maddening · 17/03/2021 19:01

Why does it need othering in having a term for clothing size 14 and over. Petite is different as it is for shorter peeps and tall range for taller people but they all use the size range 0-whatever.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 17/03/2021 19:02

It's like
"I can't wait to get back to normal and go to the office every day"
"I never worked in the office. It's not normal. What do you mean normal. Why do you think going to office is normal? Most people don't go to office every day so it's not normal"

It's person's normal. Doesn't have to be yours. Your normal doesn't have to be theirs.

GreyhoundG1rl · 17/03/2021 19:05

I think Worra stirred the shit by claiming the NHS had defined what a normal weight was Wink

Nah. The shit has been stirred by then imo
NekoShiro · 17/03/2021 19:06

It's called plus size because in dressmaking the sizes are predetermined by pattern blocks, so when they need to make bigger sizes for a bigger population they had to 'plus' on extra cms to their current patterns, atleast that's how it was explained to me during my uni course for fashion design

GreyhoundG1rl · 17/03/2021 19:06

Joke...

Yes, this is right - designing plus size clothes is an industry in itself, including patterns and colours designed to look good on a more rounded figure as well as the cut, as Schrodingers mentioned.
QueenPaw · 17/03/2021 19:15

@thecatsthecats you just described me. I'm 5ft 10, broad shoulders, 34K bra and a size 16
I need tall plus size extra boob room Grin

Why do you feel like this though?

We need to see overweight as being abnormal, I’m honestly staggered at how a whole nation seems quite happy to be deprived of their liberty in order to protect the NHS, yet going on a diet (which would undoubtedly be of huge benefit the NHS) is somehow ‘insulting’

🤣🤣🤣 I swear (unless I dreamed it!) it used to be a category!

@Moneyworriesneedtogetagrip

Firstly, that’s who took the username I wanted..

Secondly, my friends are all very tall slim bunch of girls so I think me being short and stumpy didn’t help while stood amongst them! I was rather hurt by the “who’s the bigger bridesmaid?” Though.. I mean.. how rude Blush

Thank you! Smile

DenisetheMenace · 17/03/2021 19:34

Don’t think it means very much these days however it’s put across.
Some stores XL =12/14, in others “one size” is enormous.
Our son has to have XXL tops because he’s already past 6 3” at just 18. It’s as much as a nightmare trying to find some sort of uniform size guide for both I think .

FWIW, when I was quite a bit younger and a lot larger, I welcomed the arrival of “plus size” shops because at last I knew I could go in and find something that would actually fit. There was nothing worse than looking in Top Shop and being “assisted” by waifs 😁 Was never offended by the term, personally.

Clothes sellers are there to make money. They aren't there to reform people's eating. They will call clothes sizes whatever appeals to the people buying them. It doesn't matter what people who are too slim to buy them think about it. They'll make no money from them.

RoseLimeade · 17/03/2021 19:53

Bit off topic but the mention of BMI has led to me experimenting with the NHS calculator, and what a great tool. It gives you a daily calorie goal to lose a specific amount of weight as soon as you calculate. And if you’re very obese it even encourages you to achieve a manageable goal, by stating that ‘losing even 5% of your weight will really benefit your health’ then saying what amount to eat to lose that at what pace.

So much more encouraging and helpful than just saying you’re obese and leaving it at that, or saying you need to lose several stones. Very impressive as a public health tool.
