just that really, women seem to be a minority in many ways. recent events have bought it to ahead that we won't put up and shut up for anyone. our voices need to be heard as womens lives matter too !

I agree on not co-opting BLM. Can you not think of another slogan? We shouldn’t hijack BLM.

OppsUpsSide · 14/03/2021 16:00

I am fed up of the ‘we really shouldn’t make a fuss, what about...’ why shouldn’t we defend ourselves? We need to defend ourselves, no one else is going to do it.

TwoBreakingIntoOne · 14/03/2021 16:01

Why is wanting sex based rights for women transphobic. Is there a conflict of interest Hmm

Dyrne · 14/03/2021 16:09

I agree that co-opting BLM would undermine a lot of credibility - particularly as I do feel massively uncomfortable that this whole outcry over Sarah Everard already smacks uncomfortably of “a pretty young white woman has been affected, now it’s gone too far!”

Something to unite efforts would be good though, as the whole Vigil organisation was a bit of a shit show - I saw at least 4 different times being circulated yesterday as the “time to act”; which undermined efforts somewhat.

BrumBoo · 14/03/2021 16:19

I dont agree with a Women’s Lives Matter slogan. It's already been co-opted by other groups, which is completely unfair.

Reclaim the Streets, Me Too, Sex Matters, those are enough to be getting on with. Especially ones that point out that female abuse and sexism in this world stems from our biology not from our ladybrains. Fuck that truth being 'transphobic'.

Still1nLove · 14/03/2021 16:32

I’ve just read an article about a man, convicted of sexually assaulting a woman who he had grabbed in the street, given a suspended sentence because a prison term would’ve meant he would loose his job!
Surely the least we can expect is justice?

#reclaimthestreets #metoo #endviolenceagainstwomen

@AlexaShutUp

You are right *@VladmirsPoutine*.

What happened to Sarah Everard was awful and it's right that there should be a public outcry, but I think we would be kidding ourselves if we believed that the death of a young black woman would have sparked the same reaction.

This in spades.

@DeeCeeCherry How've you been? I remember we've been banging the same drum on a lot of these sorts of threads over the years. Nothing has changed, alas

Here & still fighting the fight🙂

So true. Nothing changes. & It's beyond time for change.

BLM was started by Black 2 women. Those women got so much flack for doing so. & Too many have chosen to forget that, and jump on the bandwagon of deriding people protesting about Black lives being taken. Just, not seeing the real picture and playing into men's hands. All the time.

& Now, here we are. It appears people have suddenly had their blinkers removed and are shocked that yes police brutality, bully-boy tactics, covering for their own, being tone deaf, being uncaring of anyone they don't see as 'themselves', is a massive problem.

As is being derided, scorned, facing outrage for attending a vigil or protest for injustices that sadden us and are close to our hearts.

We've always known it. Now others do.

First they came for us...

ChonkyChook · 14/03/2021 16:49

Page 1 and told women can't organise without men.

Knitterbabe · 14/03/2021 16:52

@VladmirsPoutine
Would it be acceptable to say ‘A lot of black women cant see further than themselves’? No? Thought not.

AlexaShutUp · 14/03/2021 16:55

@VladmirsPoutine
Would it be acceptable to say ‘A lot of black women cant see further than themselves’? No? Thought not.

But @Knitterbabe, I think @VladimirsPoutine is right. Do you honestly think that the reaction would have been the same if Sarah Everard had been black?

DeeCeeCherry · 14/03/2021 16:57

Reading thread and thinking "Vigil" is a good slogan (if slogan is right word)

1 word. Saying it as it is.

For all women.

AlexaShutUp · 14/03/2021 16:58

Yes, I like Vigil too @DeeCeeCherry.

Knitterbabe · 14/03/2021 16:59

@AlexaShutUp
That doesn’t answer my question

Eyjafjallajokulldottir · 14/03/2021 17:02

@VladmirsPoutine

I want a movement for women that won't be taken over by males

Really could we just try to put aside transphobia just for once while other things are happening. Just for once.

Could you not centre men for like, I don't know, 5 minutes? You're no feminist if you include men. Shame on you.
AlexaShutUp · 14/03/2021 17:02

Sorry @Knitterbabe, your question wasn't directed at me, but tbh, I thought it was a bit pointless. White women experience privilege that black women do not, so the comparison isn't relevant.

Do you think that the reaction would have been the same if Sarah Everard had been black? Because I don't.

Dutch1e · 14/03/2021 17:04

You're absolutely right that as the law continues to fail us we need to take it into our own hands (similar to the Pink Sari / Gulabi gang). Forget Vigil, let's go straight to Vigilante.

YABVVU to suggest WLM, even though I take the point you're making.

VladmirsPoutine · 14/03/2021 17:06

And frankly sorry to sound so crass but there really is something laughable if not bittersweet that so many white women are now decrying the police and subsequently police brutality. They are honestly shocked that the police can behave in such a manner. For a lot of us it's like asking if the pope is catholic Grin

Welcome!!! Welcome to our world!

Dutch1e · 14/03/2021 17:08

VladmirsPoutine

It doesn't sound crass. You're right and your feeling of "how do you like it?" is hard-earned. Fair play to you.

Knitterbabe · 14/03/2021 17:09

Do you think the reaction would be the same if someone had the temerity to say ‘a lot of black women can’t see further than themselves’?
Can't we keep race out if it? Why are white women not to react to this tragic murder with a vigil, a protest or whatever they wish?

VladmirsPoutine · 14/03/2021 17:10

Would it be acceptable to say ‘A lot of black women cant see further than themselves’? No? Thought not.

@Knitterbabe Thing is this would be quite a compliment to us. Because most of the time we deal with racism and sexism. It's called Misogynoir. That's why a lot of us struggle to call ourselves 'feminists' and indeed why I am frankly terrified of white women because of the micro-aggressions. And indeed why I know that white women's tears can get people like me fired, or if I were a male potentially killed or arrested. So I hope to high heaven that black women can see further than themselves because failing to do so might just be the end of them in a way that would not be that of a white woman.

Thank you for your consideration. xx

warmandtoasty2day · 14/03/2021 17:11

whatever slogan we put it under we HAVE to be heard.

OP posts:
DeeCeeCherry · 14/03/2021 17:15

knitterbabe

If the title of the thread hadn't been co-opting BLM in a negative way -

and then suggesting a slogan with same initials as White Lives Matter🤔

then race would've been kept out of it.

Aiming to silence women who respond to that is wrong.

Now if race is really kept out of it then we'll get somewhere in the name of mobilising against danger to women.
