To get this person into trouble?

I was purchasing some furniture a couple of months back through Instagram. I put a deposit down through PayPal and then the person blocked me. I paid through ‘friends and family’ therefore no payment protection.

Very annoyed with myself but learnt from the incident.

Logged into my PayPal last night and saw the person still in my contacts. They have now updated their email address to their work email - think [email protected]

I’m tempted to contacted their place of work seeing as they’ve linked an account that scams people to their work address.

Aibu or should I just leave it?

I’d send an email to their workplace

I'm normally against contacting people's employers, especially when it's because you disagree with their views on feminism etc, but this person sounds like a right little shit.

The company probs won't do anything but if you can find the email addresses of a few senior managers and email them whilst copying him/her in it'll certainly add a bit of va va voom to their Monday morning. 😂

I'd probably copy in like 20 managers just to maximise the "oh shit" effect.

Be all breezy and say something like, "As shown in the attached image, I paid a deposit for X item but have not received any communication. As the PayPal accound concerned is linked to this company, is there someone else who can help me deal with getting my refund or getting the item I have paid a deposit for?"

This is brilliant!

You could totally say something like "having paid my deposit for xyz and been subsequently blocked, I can only assume that no refund is forthcoming. I've posted for advice on (MSE, CAB, etc) and been advised to refer this to the ombudsmen. I will be reporting the company associated with the contact email unless I receive communication in the meantime." 👊

Well I included as many contacts as I could find at the company - some bounced back but I’m assuming the others went through.

I advised them that I had my money stolen through a PayPal scam by their employee through an email directly linked to their company. I asked is this standard practice for the company to take money from people and block all further contact or do I need to contact the Financial Conduct Authority to alert them to my concerns (obviously I would never).

I then provided a screen recording of the transaction and of clicking on the contact button which brings up the work email address.

If nothing comes of it then fine - they might even ignore my email. But I’m assuming they will at least have an informal meeting with him to stop using his work email for personal use which might scare him into being a decent human being.

I would love to go into his work place but unfortunately I’m East Midlands and (if I have the right branch) he’s in Glasgow (10 hour round trip!).

Good for you, I reported someone in financial services for fraud (years ago). Nothing was done but then they were found guilty of big scale fraud about five years later and got struck off from their regulating authority.

Excellent!

Oh, to be a fly on the wall when they mention the words "PayPal scam". I'll bet he goes red as a beetroot!

sneakysnoopysniper · 11/03/2021 01:31

The only reason people ask you to use "friends and family" is to avoid Paypal fees. If the seller is legitimately paying tax then Paypal fees are a tax deductable business expense. So this is a red flag that the seller is not paying tax and therefore not a legitimate business. Only use friends and family for private non commercial transactions.

I would definitely contact the company and report the scammer.

Place-marking for update. Brilliant work OP. You could take it to the small claims court if you have their full name. Nothing to stop you.

Cookies47 · 11/03/2021 07:31

Love this!

GoryGilmore · 11/03/2021 07:37

Well done OP. I hate people who do things like this. Hope he gets what he deserves!

Lipz · 11/03/2021 07:48

Oh good for you. I hate scammers and if there's any small way of getting them back everyone should.

Weirdfan · 11/03/2021 08:04

Good for you OP, I had to do something similar a couple of years back although in my case the aim was to get my money back. It worked and they're no longer on FB so at least they're not scamming anyone else on there. Hope your email has the desired effect and causes a shitstorm for your scammer, karma Smile

PegasusReturns · 11/03/2021 08:04

Brilliant - if nothing else he’ll be having a deservedly shit day!
