I was purchasing some furniture a couple of months back through Instagram. I put a deposit down through PayPal and then the person blocked me. I paid through ‘friends and family’ therefore no payment protection.

Very annoyed with myself but learnt from the incident.

Logged into my PayPal last night and saw the person still in my contacts. They have now updated their email address to their work email - think [email protected]

I’m tempted to contacted their place of work seeing as they’ve linked an account that scams people to their work address.

Aibu or should I just leave it?

I hope you do get your money back - hopefully his employer will insist he does the right thing. If not, file a claim with the small claims court now you have a work address for him. £250 is a lot of money to lose.

Sorry but I think you are getting your hopes up.

You weren't scammed from this work email address so quite easy for this person to deny its them - even if their employer was interested in that.

The best you can hope for is them getting in trouble with using a work email address on paypal and not all businesses would be bothered by that. - I know my workplace wouldn't be remotely bothered.

Sorry you've been scammed. I think you are better reporting to the police.

I suspect if it's a bank they work at you'll hear back in the not too distant future. You can find the CEO email address and send all email correspondence to them - I know in my company a complaint sent to the CEO went through different people and brought more attention.

I'd email them the seller who stole from you- and explain that after the theft and blocking of you- they have 2 days to reply to you, or you will be escalating to the company as it brings them into disrepute.

DO IT COPY THE RECEIPT INTO IT AND SAY YOU WERE QUITE DITRESSED BY THE INCIDENT AND THOUGHT THEY SHOULD KNOW THE TYPE OF INDIVIDUAL WHO WORKS FOR THEM AND UPDATE US!!

Banks would take this seriously. Screenshot his Instagram (sign out of your account) and dms too

If you have his full name and work location, you could possibly figure out his address. That’s all you need to start a money claim online

I would also look into disputing the transaction. I used unauthorised when scammed by PayPal friends and family (anyvan furniture delivery) - it was closed in my favour. You can see if your bank would allow you to dispute it too. They won’t necessarily notice or care about “PayPal friends and family” - no need to mention it.

Also I would go digging for their head office, HR and CEO email addresses & forward it.

I don’t think that I could let this lie. It may amount to nothing but you have nothing to lose by trying. If it is a genuine works email address then I’m sure they won’t be happy about one of their employees using the company email address to commit fraud. May I ask how much you paid?

Have you taken a screenshot of the email address being used for Paypal? As he will change it quickish.

If you're in the UK the scammer is most likely still in their probationary period and therefore termination is pretty simple for the employer if they decide the employee is not a trustworthy hire.
