To get this person into trouble?

I was purchasing some furniture a couple of months back through Instagram. I put a deposit down through PayPal and then the person blocked me. I paid through ‘friends and family’ therefore no payment protection.

Very annoyed with myself but learnt from the incident.

Logged into my PayPal last night and saw the person still in my contacts. They have now updated their email address to their work email - think [email protected]

I’m tempted to contacted their place of work seeing as they’ve linked an account that scams people to their work address.

Aibu or should I just leave it?

@Mrgrinch

So you're not willing to go to the police but you're happy to bother a company that has nothing to do with it?

You're being ridiculous.

It's your own stupid fault you lost the money.

Oh dear let’s hope your never scammed. Maybe just scroll on just a suggestion and have a lovely day .
MaMaD1990 · 17/03/2021 15:08

@Mrgrinch - reported.

KingsRoad · 17/03/2021 15:16

They have got something to do with it as it's his work email address.

Living up to your name. I mean I did place blame on myself at the start of this thread so don’t really get why you’d want to say it’s my stupid fault when I already acknowledged that.

Just feel if someone has held their hands up to a mistake and owned it then you don’t need to put them down over it because I can’t go back and change my actions, I can only learn from my stupidity.

Why would I go to the police? They won’t do a damn thing. I got mugged before had my purse stolen, I was left unconscious and they used my debit card and there was cctv and nothing happened. It went no further.

I only contacted their work as they had a direct link to them using their work email. Maybe you believe fraudsters should be allowed to commit crimes and have zero consequences - but I don’t so we’ll have to agree to disagree on that.

@Mrgrinch is clearly angry at the world; go and scream into a pillow or something Grinchy.

OP Maybe the employer will insist the scammer pays you back? I love how you dealt with this, he'll think twice before he scams somebody else.

Please do update the thread if/when you have updates, I would love to know how this turns out and if the scammer gets his comeuppance (I believe it's called a Justice Boner. Grin ) Ignore the 'cancel the cheque' brigade!

LadyDanburysHat · 17/03/2021 15:36

Just found this thread. Good luck OP. I hope the company get back to you.

Mylittlesandwich · 17/03/2021 15:51

OP I'm near Glasgow...

Seriously though I really hope you hear that he's been reprimanded and fingers crossed he'll learn a lesson!

Emeraldshamrock · 17/03/2021 15:52

@Iwishiwereheather Please try reporting it to the cyber crime department, this person is probably still stealing from other people.
Ignore the victim blaming.

WeatherwaxLives · 17/03/2021 19:16

Another one to beware of is ''Bank transfer''.

God this, 1000 times this. DP was scammed out of TEN GRAND by bank transfer! We got it back, but good god it was stressful!

He was duped by a vehicle sales website that had been cloned from a legit site - once he'd transferred the money the replies to his emails stopped. It took him 2 days to get up the nerve to tell me he thought he'd been scammed. Luckily I'd seen advice on here of what to do, so made him ring the bank and action fraud immediately (it was Fri eve, he was going to wait till Monday! Hmm Confused ). We were so lucky the bank reversed the payment successfully, they would have been well within the rules to say he'd intentionally transferred it and not their problem. So lucky they hadn't moved the money out of the account.

Your post was deleted because it was particularly spiteful and unnecessary, but glad you find it hilarious.

@Mrgrinch oh do bore off. Nobody is interested in your negative ninny responses.

By publicly using that email address he is representing his company to the public. Everything he does reflects on the company. Like how schools will discipline students for misbehaving out of school if they were wearing school uniform.

AnImposter · 17/03/2021 19:29

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 wtg OP. -blatant placemark-

QuiteContraryMarie · 17/03/2021 20:23

OP, would you ever consider giving them a call. It’s often better than email, for all you know the person in question could be a model employee and be saying to the person investigating that you’re making it all up. Whereas on a call, it would be fairly obvious that you’re genuine.
I still think there’s a chance you’ll get your money back. Or at the very least, I hope this person loses their job.

StoneofDestiny · 17/03/2021 20:47

You've done the right thing OP - hoping you will update us. £250 is a huge amount to lose to a thief

Lauraa7 · 17/03/2021 20:48

I meant post on the company Facebook 😊

cerseii · 17/03/2021 21:10

Worst case scenario post it on Twitter and share the link, you’ve had almost 250 replies on here so I’m sure the tweet will gain traction

Blindstupid · 17/03/2021 21:42

I agree with mrgrinch .. however I wouldn’t say it so bluntly, and the OP knows she was stupid, no need to rub it in. I still don’t understand why OP won’t go through the police and didn’t in the very beginning - the reasoning only came later and tbh £250 is a lot of money to lose and just forget about. I don’t know why people are banging on about slandering the company on social media ... why? They had nothing to do with it at all. This is now months later, OP had written off getting the money back, yet now is pursuing someone who was not involved. Go to the police, fraud, cyber crime. Get it done properly and punish the correct person.

cerseii · 17/03/2021 21:47

I don’t understand why you don’t understand. The police don’t investigate more serious crimes, why would they bother with this? They’re understaffed and underfunded, of course they will prioritise their resources elsewhere.

Blindstupid · 17/03/2021 21:54

Because it’s fraud. They do investigate ... they may be limited, but they do investigate. It’s fraud, cyber fraud, they have dedicated teams to deal with it. It would have been at least worth a report. At least that. To not report it at all was daft.

My garage was broken into and items stolen - I reported it, despite many people saying not to bother as nothing is ever done, police are rubbish etc ... however police and forensics came out as there was possible evidence. Eventually it came to nothing as the dna didn’t match anyone on the database. But it was reported and investigated.

Surely it’s better to at least try?

Blindstupid · 17/03/2021 21:56

To wait and then months later pursue a complete innocent party is worse than not reporting to the relevant authorities.

Iwishiwereheather · 17/03/2021 22:06

Typed out such a long reply and deleted. I can’t be bothered.

I never saw Grinches comment so no idea what she found hilarious and Blindstupid you’re just as bad.

Not sure most people that couldn’t afford a bed are that hilarious. I left a toxic abusive relationship and 95% of my belongings behind for a fresh start.

OP posts:
Iwishiwereheather · 17/03/2021 22:10

What do you want from me exactly Blindstupid? The police aren’t interested in working class black woman. Can’t see them coming out to do a forensics test on my garage (not that I even have one).

I also wouldn’t waste police resources on my own mistake. That could take help away from a more vulnerable person.

Oh well I hope you’re happy now you’ve literally caused me to spiral back into a very dark place by forcing to justify things.
