To think that a 6 year sentence is excessive

And that à man in the same circumstances would never have been given such a sentence.

Obviously she should be punished and never teach again, but 6 years!

I know of a teacher who did similar but the girl was 16 and he got 2 years. But there is a big difference between 15 and 16 in law. If he had had sex with a 16 year old he had met in a nightclub rather than a classroom then it would not have been a crime at all (although highly inappropriate!) where as it doesn’t matter how you meet a 15 year old - it is still a crime.

purrswhileheeats · 05/03/2021 18:41

Jeremy Forrest got 5.5 years didn't he?

CanofCant · 05/03/2021 18:41

I don't think it is excessive, she is a sex offender. I do agree with you that a male offender would not get sentenced nearly as long though. Iirc Jeremy Forrest served only 2 years of a five and a half sentence.

HollowTalk · 05/03/2021 18:42

She's not a paedophile, ffs. That's someone who's attracted to pre-pubescent children. It's bad enough what she did, without calling her that.

Pulledamonica · 05/03/2021 18:42

I don't know whether it's an appropriate sentence but I definitely wouldn't want it to be shorter. She is scum for what she did.

cameocat · 05/03/2021 18:42

s a fellow educator I am disgusted by what she did and don't think this is too harsh. We are put in a position of trust and this behaviour is utterly unacceptable by either a man or woman to their victim.

shitsandgig · 05/03/2021 18:42

@Bluntasduck

It's not that hers should be shorter. It's that most sentences should be longer
This this this
Kgrzghtechh · 05/03/2021 18:43

@peak2021

What is wrong is not the sentence but that others committing the same offence don't get the same if a man.
Yes. When male teachers groom and sexually abuse their students the victim is reported as having "seduced" them and excuses made for the abuser.

The travesty is that male abusers are not held to account.

Female teacher gets 16 months for sex with 15 year old pupil -

Female teacher gets 12 months for sex with 16 year old pupil -

The point is, you can't compare the case of one female teacher with that of one male teacher, and conclude that women get a rougher deal.

Each case is different. You are comparing apples with oranges. The circumstances and charges will differ from case to case. Barber did not admit to her crimes immediately and contested them in court, which will also be a factor in sentencing.

Some research in fact suggests the opposite - that female sex offenders are sentenced more leniently than male offenders.

CanofCant · 05/03/2021 18:44

Cross posted with a few of you.

I don't think that 6 years is excessive for abusing the trust of a student. I object to the men getting lower sentences because teen schoolgirls are considered provocative

Wholeheartedly agree with this @ODFOx. Boils my blood.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 05/03/2021 18:45

13 months for primary school children here www.theguardian.com/law/2013/dec/05/teacher-pupils-sentence-increased-court-appeal

18 months suspended www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-30835245

This is mumsnet though. Can't let facts or reality get in the way of a good rant/pile-on.

Aimee1987 · 05/03/2021 18:45

That is a ridiculously short period for the sexual assault of a child. A male perpetrator would get a far longer sentence (and as far as I'm concerned regardless of the sex of the perpetrator they deserve a long long sentence). I'm not sure why the case you know of resulted in such a short sentence but I looked up the statistics. I the cases of the rape of a child over 13 and u der legal age usually results in 15 years of custody.

Nightbear · 05/03/2021 18:47

I think that the true problem is that many men don’t get long enough sentences rather than this sentence being too long.

HollowTalk · 05/03/2021 18:47

She wasn't charged with rape, though.

Oh, right, that makes it all OK, then.

Christ almighty. No wonder it's so bloody hard to get creepy, predatory staff out of schools when there are people around who focus on this rather than the sexual abuse of somebody who is legally a child.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 05/03/2021 18:50
I do not think it is excessive but you are right that a man would not receive that sentance.

A quick Google and this male teacher got two years.

www.google.com/amp/s/www.thesun.co.uk/news/12893108/married-teacher-sex-schoolgirl-naked-pics-jailed/amp/
And just look at the difference of reporting in these two cases: the semi jokey 'Perv Sir' headline v ''beyond despicable'. The report on the man's case is full of how his life is ruined, how remorseful he is, and the judge is sure he will never be in court again. All as if the whole thing was a rather unfortunate accident.

Whereas we have salacious details of the woman's alleged sexual appetite etc.

I do not, however, think she was 'under sentenced'. She manipulated her victim and applied coercion to keep him quiet, threatening him etc.

The other abusive men should have got longer sentences. As for the one who took her to France being out so quickly...

AIMD · 05/03/2021 18:51

No I don’t think this sentence is excessive. She won’t be in prison for 6 years.

I think other sexual crimes against children aren’t sentenced toughly enough.

Volcanoexplorer · 05/03/2021 18:51

I’m also a teacher and find this absolutely despicable, abhorrent behaviour. 6 years is too short if anything. He was 15 - still a child and she was in a position responsibility. She set out to groom him and have her way. Totally disgusting. Imagine it was your son this had happened to. Just terrible and cannot be excused or lessened just because she is a woman.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 05/03/2021 18:52

Yes she does deserve it, she had sex with someone classed as a child and she destroyed her credibility as a teacher. She was in a position of trust.
Why can't these people just keep their pants on and have some self control?

AIMD · 05/03/2021 18:52

I remember being told that women with violent or sexual crimes generally get longer sentence than men. Though for more minimal crimes they get shorter sentences.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 05/03/2021 18:53

And the girl Jeremy Forrest took to France was only 14 when he started the relationship. So younger than the boy on this case.

PlayingTheDevilsAvocado · 05/03/2021 18:54

@HollowTalk

She wasn't charged with rape, though.
She could only be charged with rape if she had a penis.
SunshineCake · 05/03/2021 18:55

I am so pleased for you OP that you aren't been abused or had a child be assaulted. You can't have if you think six years is too much of a punishment. Can you manage some critical thinking about the victim?
